The Bloop posted:Pits are generally mildly harmful fun. There's always some goober that absolutely does not belong that gets hurt but if you are intentionally being a shithead you are going to get wrecked The worst injury I saw in a pit was a young woman way too drunk came in and immediately fell on the back of her head onto concrete, got removed, came back in, fell on her head again, got removed, came in again, etc. People were physically pushing her out of the pit as she fought them until her friends dragged her away. I really hope she wasn't concussed, definitely didn't feel anything at the moment, I'm sure she was miserable the next day. She took two or three blows to the head that day. haveblue posted:It's probably not objectively healthy but most crowd crush incidents involve a hard physical barrier, a different crowd pushing in the opposite direction probably isn't enough to kill you on its own I usually stick to the edge of a pit. My most miserable experience was front row for AWK in my winter coat, simultaneously being crushed against the barricade by the pit and overheating from all the bodies. Ended up sitting in the back drinking water until the show ended.

I don't think I've ever seen so many people gangpile on someone that fast. Security were coming not to stop him but to save him at that point.

Cartoon Man posted:Seriouspost question, is that wall of death mosh pit thing not as bad as it looks? I’ve never been to a mosh pit concert and have no frame of reference. Some people probably got knocked around but it probably wasn’t worse than some bruises and a bloody nose. Speaking as ex crowd security though, I would have been making GBS threads my pants because there’s several hundred randoms right behind who could have drunkenly piled on and made it a lot worse. Worst case scenario is something like Roskilde festival Orange stage in 2000 where 9 died and dozens were injured at a Pearl Jam concert. Now there are multiple wave breakers (waist high fences) and crowd sec behind the barriers who can pull people out into safety. For a sense of scale, there can be upwards of 50,000 people at that stage. A mosh pit in a small venue is pretty safe and like others have said, folks look out for each other.

Can't beat a good pit, metal heads tend to be the friendliest of people. The worst injury I've ever heard of at a pit was a mate on the edge of the dancefloor twisted his ankle because he landed on it funny half on, half off the stage. I think my favourite pit was the guy on crutches who was stood at the edge of it and got absorbed into it as his crutches ended up going crowd surfing in opposite directions.

So, the impression I'm getting is that a mosh pit is safer than my middle school right before break, where a girl fell and the herd of students didn't stop and she ended up with a broken arm. Is this rush hour or the Fall of Saigon? Not gonna lie, I've had days where I'd be willing to do that if it meant getting home from work faster.

Cat Hatter posted:So, the impression I'm getting is that a mosh pit is safer than my middle school right before break, where a girl fell and the herd of students didn't stop and she ended up with a broken arm. From the concert event production side, 3 genres of music will have more injuries than average, metal, country, and urban. Metal pumps out a lot of 'consensual' mosh pit injuries, mostly minor stuff, sometimes someone hits their head or breaks a bone, but the crowd is helpful with the injuries and loves moshing. Country is drunken fist fights. So many fights, and people involved are angry and belligerent, because they're loving wasted. Rap/hip-hip/urban is similar, more chill overall, but the fights are more likely to have weapons involved. Obviously just general guidelines, some artists and crowds are super chill, and others are way more aggro. Roughly aligns with how thick the cloud of weed smoke is, vs how much beer covers the floor afterwards. EDM also has higher medical demands, but that's mostly due to drugs and dehydration.
