Listen, it was to use those 50 million dollars to try to improve the roster or to pay him to play for St. Louis. There was clearly only one choice there.

lol they're paying more to make Arenado go away than so many teams are paying for their entire rosters.

Make or break time for the "Arenado can't hit away from Coor's" thing I guess.

loving Cubs, Rockies literally would have sent them $50M to be able to slot in Arenado at 3B and float KB to LF, in exchange for quantity over quality prospect return. Super cool they couldn't be on it because poor old Tom is broke.

1 million dollars now is more than a million in 10 years. Most of the deferrals lately have not had extra money later to make up for inflation.

Arenado's career home / away splits wouldn’t trouble me, the Coors Effect isn’t that simple. What would trouble me is the shoulder injury and consequent poor 2020 results, as well as the intact opt-outs

Home/Road splits are weird and a lot of players who don't have a Coor's thing going on hit way better at home, presumably due much in part to the psychological and physical advantages of playing at home vs having to travel. I don't think Arenado is a true 263/322/471 hitter.

For reference here are his career slash lines at all the NL Central parks:

Busch: .278/.337/.511
Wrigley: .247/.287/.495
GAB: .291/.370/.456
PNC: .269/.310/.358
Miller: .397/.461/.838

Arenado will have a career year in St. Louis and will opt out after the season and the Cardinals will have made $15 millions dollars.

lmao unless the players absolutely cream ownership in the next CBA there's no way Arenado is opting out of the remaining years on the deal, even if he has a career year.

I swear to God. And I know my favorite team has the worst record since the day I was born, but still, the Rockies have to be the worst run org in baseball. Nothing they do ever makes any loving sense.

Edit: and I know the Pirates exist too. But I still think the Rockies are worse. The Rockies actually try to win sometimes.

Is it just a straight $50m payment? I remember with A-Rod the Rangers were paying a portion every year and Yankees fans got really pissed when he opted out and resigned because it let the Rangers off the hook

It's probably not a lump payment but it would be hilarious and sad and total Cardinals bullshit if it happened so I'm going to assume that's exactly how this plays out.

Now that the Cardinals picked up Arenado it would be nice if baseball didnt begin in July this year, but I have little hope. Even if they just vaccinate the players the owners are never going to let them play without fans.
