started gideon the ninth. it’s okay and all my queer friends seem to love it but it’s too edgy and quippy for me. like this is some lies of locke lamora poo poo and like i’ll obviously tolerate it to a degree but it hit hard and fast. i’ve been trying to read newer poo poo but it’s all been obnoxious like that and like if the story is good enough i’ll put up with it, like in the expanse. but i’ve read so many stinkers this year, from altered carbon, to the lies of lock lamorra, to this awful awful werewolf book. i tried banks a few years ago with hydrogen sonata but bounced the gently caress off of it within 100 pages. is there modern scifi/fantasy poo poo that isn’t quippy formulaic poo poo or am i poo poo out of luck?

seconding the raven tower, pushing ninefox gambit + sequels (they use a very simple unobtrusive style to tell a compelling story)

I liked the Ancillary books a lot. you need to be prepared for a narrator whose culture only uses she/her pronouns.

Carthag Tuek posted:yeah it's good I really liked the first ancillary book, the second two were still good but could have been condensed to one the raven tower is one of my all time favorite fantasy books now for anyone that’s thinking about picking it up, the raven tower is best read cold, HOWEVER it has a unique narrative device that you may find yourself bouncing off of. if that’s the case, you owe it to yourself to at least read through the first flashback

i have blindsight and witcher 1 racked up to go next. i put raven tower and nine fox up on my for later shelf. thanks goons. i really don’t want loving ten pages of banks chat for the billionth time (love y’all) but should my first book be consider phlebas or player of games Casual Encountess fucked around with this message at 19:32 on Jan 30, 2021 |

# ? Jan 30, 2021 18:59 |

reading a player of games is the best space move consider phlebas is sort of a field test of the culture, both for audience and author. in the later books the setting is a fully formed presence

Use of weapons imho

player of games imo it is a good introduction to the culture that doesn't require a lot of other knowledge of the books

Ancillary Justice is just downright awesome. It uses a genuinely novel approach to a sci fi idea to explore concepts of the boundaries of self. There's one point in the book that is so interesting, I still can't just enjoy the latter two books because they don't explore it further. Specifically: Anaander Mianaai goes to the the Justice of Toren ship, and JoT lies through her teeth to the queen of all civilization but doesn't know why. The really juicy, tantalizing stuff is when JoT starts to remember fragments of a previous visit from Mianaai, which had been scrubbed from her memory as they're talking: quote:
The book explicitly describes two factions- AM states she's plotting a self-coup over a change of heart (this one hacked JoT), and the other AM is convinced the aliens have hacked a faction of herself, bending it toward self destruction. This lays out core tension of the plot, imo. But, AFAICT, the rest of the book/books never touch on this? The very next thing that happens is the "i've been hacked" Mianaai faction orders JoT to kill its commander, and then JoT goes on a revenge rampage to try and kill (either?) Mianaai faction at the capital. But there's no resolution- is the protagonist a programmed sleeper cell? Did Mianaai get hacked, or did part of her brain just decide to stage a very violent coup over a difference of opinion? Anyway, I've read the book four or five times now, and thinking about it again I think I've got to queue up another pass. Really good stuff.

it’s pretty explicit that it’s the latter that happened, specifically over how to deal with the Presgr iircCasual Encountess posted:blindsight woof, talk about a stinker. but I think some people here lied it so maybe you will too I’d recommend KSR’s Aurora. it’s fairly depressing but really good and I can’t stop thinking about it

blindsight is very good and also very dark and not quippy I got a few chapters into it before it was renamed permanently in my mind to “rendezvous with rama 40K”

blindsight and echopraxia are both great, and are even read by people who aren't big scifi fans though i'm a little concerned about his other work, doesn't he have a pedophile POV character or something

like i know what i’m getting into with genre fiction but much like movies everything is too quippy and marvel super hero. and not even the fun kind of pulpy. it doesn’t have to be all stoic and grim but it sucks rear end that i can already picture a lovely netflix prestige adaptation of gideon the ninth

yeah the rifter books are like if james cameron made a bdsm flick in partnership with kink.com the underwater parts and sci fi parts are great. the torture porn is not so great. there is a pedophile pov character but he goes completely native under the ocean and turns into a sort of creepy blind shrimp thing who only shows up once in a while and later is killed by an atomic bomb so it's not like it's sympathetic or anything

Sagebrush posted:yeah the rifter books are like if james cameron made a bdsm flick in partnership with kink.com I don't remember him ever being a POV, and also (major spoilers from late in the series) his pedo-ness was lasered into his brain, the same as all the other rifter crew have severe mental issues - people with trauma can (apparently) work a stressful traumatic job successfully, and it's much easier to take a submarine tech and gently caress up their brain than it is to take a basket case and train them to be a sub tech. Yeah, corporations eh? But agreed, the big bad in the 3rd book is so comically evil with his tortures and rapes that I can't believe Watts wasn't trying to say something about the ultra-powerful. Definitely not a read for anyone who would be triggered by unflinchingly hosed-up content.

there's a few passages early in the book where pedo guy is the pov and they successfully creeped me out with his inner monologue. later after he goes native the viewpoint shifts entirely to lenie and he only shows up occasionally to open a chapter and show how weird stuff is at the bottom of the ocean.
