Danaru posted:One of my favourite stories about the Netherlands and WW2 is about the city of Zwolle, occupied by nazis until a one eyed lunatic Canadian soldier named Leo Major sprinted into town started burning down Gestapo HQs and firing machineguns into Nazi buildings all night like a coked up BJ Blazkowicz. Hearing the commotion, the local resistance was like and joined in, making the Nazis think the entire Canadian army was invading. The Nazis retreated by morning. You're missing the part about how he lost his eye to a grenade on D-Day and refused to go home because he could still shoot a rifle so they just gave him one and let him have at it. Everyone should read about it

It was a story that he – so his friends mildly laugh – in the end started to believe a little bit himself." Not quite a one man army, but definitely a hero

Mierenneuker posted:I read the Wikipedia article earlier today and it featured a quote from a Dutch newspaper: Wikipedia also posted:Major single-handedly captured 93 German soldiers during the Battle of the Scheldt in Zeeland in the southern Netherlands.[5] During a reconnaissance, while alone, he spotted two German soldiers walking along a dike. As it was raining and cold, Major said to himself, "I am frozen and wet because of you so you will pay."[4] He captured the first German and attempted to use him as bait so he could capture the other. The second attempted to use his gun, but Major quickly killed him. He went on to capture their commanding officer and forced him to surrender. The German garrison surrendered themselves after three more were shot dead by Major. In a nearby village, SS troops who witnessed German soldiers being escorted by a Canadian soldier shot at their own soldiers, killing seven and injuring some others. Major disregarded the enemy fire and kept escorting his prisoners to the Canadian front line. Major then ordered a passing Canadian tank to fire on the SS troops. He marched back to camp with nearly a hundred prisoners. Thus, he was chosen to receive a Distinguished Conduct Medal. He declined the offer to be decorated, however, because according to him General Montgomery (who was to present him with the award) was "incompetent" and in no position to be giving out medals.[4]

Leo Major is cool, and he reminds me of another man who carried out a solo attack on the Nazis in the low countries: Jean de Selys Longchamps He busts out of a P.O.W. camp, heads to England, and volunteers for the RAF with forged papers, because at twenty‐eight he would be considered too old to make a good fighter pilot. He makes a good fighter pilot. One day he goes out on a mission to destroy some railway junctions, as one does. On the way home, he peels off and takes an unauthorised detour to Brussels. His target is Gestapo headquarters. They’d killed his father. He strafes the place, kills a bunch of Nazis, wounds a bunch more, and causes no collateral damage. He leaves some Belgian flags as calling cards and heads back to England. He’s demoted for breaking orders, but awarded the distinguished flying cross for his heroics.
