I think I'm going to make this next playthrough a magic-based playthrough, probably Spellswording it. Any recommended mods that make spellsword gameplay more interesting?

I just realized a bunch of the mods I wanted to play with are only for the original game, not Special Edition. :negative:

I have no loving idea what's going on in this mod but it looks cool so sure, added.

Conversion is gently simple as hell. Use Cathedral Assets Optimizer to convert the models and textures, load the esp in the creation kit, make some small change and then change it back, regenerate facegen, and save the esp.

It's only a few steps to convert and some of the steps listed you can skip iirc. It's super easy and if I can do it then anyone can

I’m early in my new playthrough, and...wow. I don’t remember base Skyrim being this mediocre. Combat is boring and clunky, 90% of your time is spent walking around empty plains, smithing might as well not loving exist, and ten years of graphical advancements haven’t done the game any favors. And god god the magic system (spells, enchantments, and alchemy) is just depressing.

No wonder people always mod this game.

I’m gonna have to seriously overhaul this thing’s gameplay. I need better combat, better gear, a reason to use smithing, way better magic, and a graphical upgrade. Also a dirt bike or something would be dope.

Back to Nexus and Youtube for ideas, I guess.

That's just more of the same, adding more spells onto the existing system. What I'm looking for is an interesting gameplay overhaul for magic, at least for combat.

Hello.

I am a bit of a purist. I really only want some bugfixes, SkyUI, and still be able to unlock achievements.

I have had an absolute nightmare of a time getting even these basic things to work. I follow guides, and my game doesn't work. I do everything I can, and nothing works. Is there a simple "literally fix JUST THE BUGS" guide I can use? I'm so frustrated with skyrim at the moment. I just don't understand why there isn't a simple solution that isn't me loving around for hours with mod organizers and other bullshit for a game that won't even work when I try. It does for Morrowind. It does for VtM:B, but Skyrim apparantly doesn;'t have a one-two solution for people that just like base skyrim and would like a better UI, and fewer bugs. Please help if possible.

Arcanum has some good spells in it without the need for overhauling the magic system itself. there are no alteration spells yet, but it's still pretty good imo. the only problem with the most recent update is that it hosed up some textures, so you need to download like 2 extra versions and merge them all together.

Is there an HQ NPC model/texture mod that isn't one of the stereotypical everyone-looks-like-a-porn-star-and/or-anime mods? Skyrim's NPCs haven't aged well at all, but everything on Nexus makes people (okay let's face it, women) look like realdolls. Total Character Makeover is close, but the Argonians look kinda jank.

Any advice on adding some of the simpler graphical/environment improvements would be choice, too. Nothing that requires a fuckin' 3090 or something.

Thing is, though, a lot of these EMBs or ESBs or whatever are focused on making Skyrim look like Lord of the Rings or Breath of the Wild. That's not Skyrim - Skyrim is sad, depressing, dark, and dreary. Unfortunately, the original game isn't so much dreary as it is muddy and lame. The art direction seemed to take "mute the poo poo out of everything and cake it in gray" as gospel. That's not the same thing. I want a graphical overhaul that makes Skyrim feel like I'm adventuring in the rear end end of Sweden, not New Zealand With HDR.

Alright, yeah, after several years I'm finally getting the itch to run this dumb game again and play through it.

I guess the first question is: how much of this stuff works with Special Edition these days? I know the OP is woefully out of date, but I guess the question is what graphical overhauls/gameplay mods/other horseshit is meant to be used with Special Edition versus Legendary Edition.

Speaking of lighting, apparently the way it's accomplished - ENB - requires a huge performance hit. Are these lighting/environment mods actually worth it?

I use that mod mostly because it's ~Vanilla Plus~ without going too crazy but you do you, that's the thing about Skyrim modding.

The effects can range from subtle to dramatic, and from a minimal performance hit to HOPE YOU LIKE SLIDESHOWS.

My limited playing with ENBs has never resulted in something I couldn't live without, but different people have different prefs. I've personally found Reshade presets to be more my speed.

You'll want a utility like this to make it easy (well, "easy") to swap between presets.

No problem! nexus's search is lovely and didn't turn the original mod up for some reason. it does require one other mod to work still, but that's it.

i've been playing with it for awhile and haven't run into any weird face bugs or anything. it's nicer looking than total character makeover. women don't look like anime realdolls or whatever either. but older women like delphine (she's supposed to be like 50 years old iirc) still look like they're in their early thirties which is disappointing.

also i play skyrim on a gaming laptop so i never hosed with things like ENBs/shaders; if you're in a similar boat (or have an older PC) obsidian weathers and seasons also includes some lightweight shading options so i just use one of those

So, actually looking at this, is this at all a -good- idea or not? I haven't necessarily played since SPERG was the main hotness. I definitely don't mind taking a wrench to the combat trees since they sorely need it but is this actually good or just a fifty mod pileup?

I used it a bunch, it's fun, I'd recommend also using Skill Uncapper and set it so you get a bonus perk every fifth level. You'll probably be overpowered depending on what other mods you use, but the extra perks are to encourage you to grab ones from random skills you don't use as much.

I don't plan to go too far - mostly looking for a Vanilla++ experience, so to speak. If I add on extra mods it'll probably be Apocalypse Spells (which this seems to account for) and the Crafting/Alchemy/Cooking overhauls. I guess I should ask if there's an overhaul for Enchanting or if that's baked into this set? Just to cover my options.

Appreciate the note about the uncapper though. Extra perk every 5th level seems reasonable.

e: Actually, whatever people recommend for beefing up Shouts, if any, would also not go amiss. Is Thunderchild still the go-to?
