Boba Pearl posted:What animals are friendly? As in capable of bonding with a human the way a cat or dog would? I know birds love you and are basically small children in emotional complexity terms. What about reptiles? Foxes? Raccoons or Rats? Is there a list? Are there ways to test this sort of thing? Animal intelligence and especially emotions and extra especially animal relationships are really argued a lot and there's very little consensus and a lot of bad science (we're only recently coming to terms with how much damage we did to the field by massively over-correcting after centuries of over anthropomorphising) around it. One recent thing seems to be sharks have much more complicated social behaviour than previously thought even among solitary species which extends to their interactions with humans. Whether this can mean liking or friendship is massively debateable but they definitely seem to be able to form lasting relationships that aren't just fight, flight, ignoring or begging for food.

Oh hey, its my rats! Rats make really good pets, they bound with people very well and are really sweet, the only downside is they have short lifespans, about 2 years on average.

It also depends a hell of a lot on how you define relationships. Like, you get some people going "well snake likes me because i'm warm and don't hurt him, so we're friends " and other people who complain that isn't emotionally complex enough to be considered a social thing.

A while back I bird sat my parents' cockatiel while they went on vacation. He showed no reaction to sounds from my video game, even abrupt and loud ones, like gunshots or screaming, but relatively mild clunks and thumps or me swearing when I stub my toe got his attention.

I wouldn't be surprised if cockatiels are smart enough to figure out stuff coming out of the TV isn't real. Or at least that it doesn't really matter. Edit: https://twitter.com/GorditosGatitos/status/1357656042537164800?s=20 wash bucket has a new favorite as of 04:13 on Feb 6, 2021 |

wesleywillis posted:What if that involved shovelling penguin poo poo? The Milwaukee County Zoo has a penguin exhibit near the visitors’ entrance, and on a hot August day the fake rocks covered in penguin poop are pungent. That combined with the Canada goose poop on every walkway makes for a heady mix. In other news, Sesame the Opossum:

I was watching the recent “the stand” miniseries last night, and Koljak the golden retriever got into a dangerous situation. And all I could think was,”no! Nothing bad can happen to a dog like that. There’s just too much “good boy” in him for evil to win!” I do not remember Koljak from the original mini series in the 90s. And I never read the book, so I don’t know if he was in the original or if Koljak, the good boy, was one of the updates King made to the latest miniseries. For anybody who has watched the latest episode I loved that Stu is half dead, yet when he realizes an explosion is heading his way, he tried to shield the dog with his body. And since I put in a bunch of words, here is a golden retriever video I found. https://youtu.be/eDvQ8ml1qTA Bored has a new favorite as of 22:45 on Feb 6, 2021 |
