Yeah my partner uses some sort of knitting app to keep track of patterns (Ravelry I think?) and they had some drama a few months ago trying to get rid of bigots and right-wing nutjobs. Nowhere is safe.

Instead Reddit will see a rising post that's making it to the front page and "seed" it with lots of awards, and this for some reason compels other people to spend money and add even more awards. Not sure if it's true but it makes sense considering how many awards some posts would get. It felt like front page posts went from occasionally getting a handful of awards to dozens and dozens almost overnight one day.

I've seen people say they got gifted a load of awards to give out, as well. Certainly it seems the desperate urge to be part of an in-crowd does lead people to add to the pile when they see an award. The AHA I GET THIS REFERENCE response seems to be quite a large part of Reddit culture so no surprise they'd find a way to drive additional revenue from it.
