KozmoNaut posted:Which is blatantly an astroturf push by Ferrero, just like the bacon thing was started and is continually boosted by the pork industry. At least cured pork does have some longer-term importance in history from back in the days when most of the year was spent preparing a food stockpile for winter. I guess a lot of "traditional" foods are the result of successful astroturf attempts back in like the 50s anyway, so it's not like that's a very unusual tactic. I wonder if there's any foods that still feel weird despite being decades old because they kept the old marketing scheme from when they were new.

Anyone ever tried applesauce in their macaroni and cheese? I did this as a kid and loved it but totally forgot about it. I don't remember why I ever started in the first place.. think I might give it another go soon.

Looping back to onion chat, have the regular onion varieties changed over time or is it just me? I've always preferred white onions to the others, especially raw, but I swear purple onions have shifted over time to the point I now try to remember to avoid them because otherwise the taste lingers for an hour or more. Yellow onions seem mostly the same, but the purple ones seem both milder and more coat-your-tongue-and-not-go-away than I remember. The basic Carl's Junior hamburgers, at least here, seem to use white onions while their "fancier" burgers use purple, and I definitely can tell the difference.

Somehow that's more hazelnuts than I thought it contained. It's still delicious, but I might take a leaf our of my mother's book here and make my own crushed hazelnut spread, like she did with peanuts because she wasn't allowed peanut butter growing up. ...I have self banned Nutella because I don't even have a sweet tooth but I will eat Nutella by the spoonful. Nothing else, just Nutella, like it's that sweet, sweet, palm oil taste of dead orangutans I crave or something.

Probably literally that, evolution has practically hardwired our brains to shovel in as much energy-dense sugar and fat as we can if we can get it, cause they haven't yet caught up with the fact that there's a neverending supply in every supermarket aisle, and nut butters of any kind have (are probably engineered to have) the exact texture that tells them "here's the good stuff get while the gettin's good."

I've never tried it but I could see that work. I used to put apple syrup on my cheese sandwich as a kid. Apple syrup is a Dutch thing and it's a very dark, molasses like, sweet and sour apple juice reduction. It's amazing on aged Gouda.

On further reflection (what a day it's been) I could see it being pretty good with a well prepared pie and paired cheddar, but it'd need to be something better than a garden variety C- apple pie. That burger sounds kickin'. Also, grilled watermelon and a smear of spicy ketchup.

Zil posted:Speaking of apple sauce, what caused it to be a thing you eat with pork chops? I mean is it a cultural thing or just an odd regional thing that spread? apples and pork is something that gets done over and over by different cultures (in Europe, anyway). there's something about the flavor chemicals that go well together... the apple in a roasting pig's mouth didn't originate as a cartoon trope. I'll go fish around in McGee and see if I can find out why
