I've never seen the original Macross or "do you remember love" which I just realized I should probably do, since I grew up loving robotech. Is there a clear winner between the two?

DYRL is not really a replacement for SDF Macross. Unlike the Mobile Suit Gundam movies which are just show footage cutup to fit into a trilogy, DYRL is more like a whole new story sharing the same characters and a couple of major plot points. That said, Do You Remember Love is better in pretty much every way and only takes two hours to watch. The show's plot is better in my opinion (at least the important parts) but the main characters are absolutely worse and drag the whole thing down. Also, budget problems galore and a bunch of filler episodes. I still had fun watching it though, and DYRL fixing the character related issues felt very cathartic.
