Some of the Protomen's second album sounded very Meat Loafy to me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkLvpt9Z3fA And as far as storytelling goes, their two albums Act I and Act II are rock operas with one continuous story. You just have to be comfortable with the fact that they are (very loosely) based on the backstory of Mega Man.

Apologies if this feels simplistic, but how much further have you looked into Jim Steinman's work? He worked with Meatloaf and on Streets of Fire, and that bombastic, theatrical take on rock is his whole thing, perhaps most famously on "Total Eclipse of the Heart".

So.... I've always liked Disco / House / that sort of thing, and a track from No Straight Roads (a music videogame) caught me pretty hard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANCMbw7y-sg The type of (albeit stereotypical to the genre) instruments really smack to what I really enjoyed about Disco and House in particular, and I've been trying in vain to find some similar piano and synth driven tracks. I've noticed a lot of Alex Metric remixes have this feel as well, to name an artist I quite like already.

First of all, that isn't disco. Anyway, you're asking for house tracks with piano and synth? That's like... all of them. That song you linked just kinda sounds like French electro-house to me; if I can presume that you're as unfamiliar with this kind of music as you sound then you should just put on the first Justice album. It's a classic for a reason, and I felt like that song was really copying Justice's test answers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jb7cTUwPG-A

Some Avantasia maybe? Tobias Sammet really channels Jim Steinman in some of his songs, at least on the more recent Avantasia albums. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYvZOe6cmeM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjRq72ZBZxs

Whatever happened to big beat? Is there any big beat still being made? I was really into Propellerheads, Hardfloor (the Da drat Phreak Noize Phunk stuff), Groove Armada, and the bigger sounding Chemical Brothers. I liked a little Prodigy but it was mostly too harsh for me.

Their stuff is alright, but I was hoping for a few older tracks. A lot of stuff that's also close to what I'm looking for more of include Stylophonic (specifically their Man Music Technology album which I can no longer find, at least digitally), Ernst Saint Laurent (mostly his remixes, though some of his own stuff is quite good), previously mentioned Alex Metric (probably one of the more recent artists), and so on. An old friend of mine from OverClocked Remix (Beatdrop/Dain Olsen) used to do some amazing house DJ sets (which were great because a lot of the more popular dj sets I always found at the time were more Trance- or Goa- focused), which have been impossible to find, and I really wish I could find his old tracklists for them to give better references. I've forgotten a lot of the track names and artists of my old favorite tracks from a decade or two ago, unfortunately.

It's 5am and I'm a bit sleep deprived due to the 7 week old currently sleeping on my chest. But I want to say Opeth would be worth checking out. They have metal tracks when they want to, but otherwise it's a nice dark melodic sound. I only have two albums of them now, so I could be far off. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9xBlCt7Tno-fpuUkX59ebHyJ0MQuz9Tk

Fred Wesley and the JBs was James Brown's band minus James Brown himself, I think, and a lot of his stuff is under that name. So this might not be what you’re after, but Fat Freddy’s Drop has a bit of trombone. Check out their live videos, the trombone player tends to jam more, and it’s extremely entertaining to watch because he’s a chubby guy who usually wears tight rhinestone tank tops, a cape, and tight short shorts, and dances like he ate a bunch of mdma right before the show. Like constant motion all over the stage dripping sweat, and he’s a good trombone player to boot.
