Buttcoin purse posted:AOL stuff from four years ago Hello Buttcoin purse! My old username was Uncle at Nintendo and you might remember a few years ago you helped me connect to AOL so that I could take a bunch of screen shots for the thread and try it out. I ended up getting it to work in a virtual machine but it was very slow and painful. I recently received a Windows 98 laptop so I am loading it up with old great DOS and Win9x games, and I got the itch to check out AOL again, this time on real hardware. Luckily I saved your Phaol1.zip. I installed the last version of Python that supported Windows 98 just like last time. I ran the setup python file and signed on to AOL6.0, which generates the config file which the command prompt said went fine. However, whenever I try to sign on to AOL5.0, I get this error: I am terrible with python so I am not sure what that error means. Could it have something to do with the way I set things up? Is there some sort of modification to the script that I should try? The only other thing I can think of is I installed some unofficial Windows 98 "service pack" which is made by some retro PC gaming community; is it possible that installed some sort of firewall that I can't see that is causing this issue? For what it's worth I don't see anything about a Firewall anywhere in Windows 98 but I have no idea what else could be wrong. I am able to connect to the internet just fine on the computer over ethernet by the way. I hope to have some great content for this thread soon, if anyone cares! I want to archive as much as humanly possible for reasons I am not even sure of!

Getaddrinfo is the call used to look up the IP address given a host name, so the most likely - though not only - explanation is that the host name it's trying to look up does not exist. As for what address it's failaing on, it's whatever is in phaol_common.HOST.

Chumbawumba4ever97 posted:I want to archive as much as humanly possible for reasons I am not even sure of! Oh yeah, I had forgotten about that project! It looks like you're too late to archive anything https://wiki.archiveteam.org/index.php/AOL says: quote:As of September 2018, AOL has closed down all methods of getting the old data. Back in March 2018, Matan2001 pointed out that AOL for Mac OS X works, but only on PPC's or lower. In August 2018, I managed to get a Tiger VM fully working and attempted to connect using the notes Matan2001 put on the wiki, but kept getting an error as seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1oFcnEkBWI americaonline.aol.com is what phaol_common.HOST is set to, so it's failing for the same reason that the standard AOL client would if you tried that without the tool. That WinDirStat shows that they only have 17.7GB, which isn't much, although I suppose by the standards of the olden days it was? Only 13,648 .zip files doesn't seem like much though. As with a lot of stuff on archive.org, the folks archiving it seem to have concentrated on saving the bits and are leaving the work of indexing it and make it easy for people to find stuff for later (which makes sense if you want to minimize how much is lost) so I guess if you're bored you could grab some of their archives and go through them looking for fun stuff to share here! I did see like .zip files of Windows 3 software from 1992 so it seems like it's legitimately old stuff, not just some "recent" files or something.

Buttcoin purse posted:Oh yeah, I had forgotten about that project! It looks like you're too late to archive anything Aw that sucks. Of course Verizon had to buy them and mess the whole thing up. They probably saw the $40 electric bill the server was using and killed it. They also officially killed all AOL chatrooms a month ago. This seems pretty ballsy because they charge monthly for AOL Desktop Gold and without the chat rooms I can't see why in the hell anyone would pay for it (well, more so than usual). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRap77miWWs I would love some sort of archive.org AOL archive that is actually viewable. I don't really see any ways to mess with the files I just downloaded, which you pretty much mentioned. Is there any way to keep up on their progress of making it "viewable"? Do I just keep searching archive.org for "AOL" every once in a while or something? I am gonna try a lot of the ZIP and EXE files on my Win98 laptop and let you know if I find anything cool. By the way, the Phoenix people who brought back AOL Instant Messenger just started a project to bring back AOL 4.0 software. They are calling it Phoenix Desktop 1.0 (Alpha). http://iwarg.ddns.net/phoenix/index.php?action=downloads2 I just tried it out and it's extremely unfinished so it's not really worth the download yet, but I am really hoping they somehow incorporate that archive.org data into it. edit: Are you aware if AOL profiles were saved in the dump? That Apple //e looks much better than mine, which was rescued from the dumpster at a public school. I used to find all kinds of things in school server rooms, like brand new unused 360k floppies, Apple expansion cards still in shrinkwrap, a Sharp XT laptop that still works, even a few Dell Poweredge servers left over from the last major tech overhaul in 2012, still good for a home lab. The boss at my new job has given me the go-ahead to help myself to any old legacy crap I find in the company warehouse. No good finds yet but I’ll post anything good here as I find it.

I assume somebody out there has done some timeline kind of stuff like starting from an 8088 on up to a modern machine? I'm old enough I take for granted knowing about the evolution of memory over the years, and the ISA to PCI progression, and the evolution of GPUs over time, but it seems like it could be helpful for younger people to get a sense of the evolution of personal computers over the years. And that whole screed was based on the previous post making me think about Rambus for some reason. Never forget.

The only people I watch regularly on youtube are Big Clive, NileRed, and Retro Game Mechanics Explained, because they are actually pleasant to listen to and present their content in an informative and entertaining way (and have charming, engaging personalities as well). RGME is the only gaming channel I follow aside from World of Longplays / TASVideosChannel / GDQ, but those are more content aggregation than an actual hosted channel. I don't even really care if I'm missing some super cool content that one of the others has, if the presentation is grating and insufferable, I just don't have the patience.

Modern Vintage Gamer has a few interesting videos I've watched. I haven't seen a lot of his videos, mainly just the one about NESticle, LensLok, and a few about anti-piracy on old consoles. There's also Curious Marc who has videos about vintage test equipment, teletype machines, and had a whole series about restoring an apollo guidance computer. I've seen a couple people complain about his videos, but I don't remember what the complaints were.
