As Nero Danced posted:Changing topics, I have a question about the Senate rules. Can they change the rules to remove the filibuster, then change them again and restore it? That sounds like the kind of poo poo McConnell would do. Yes. Rules need only a simple majority to change.

I wonder if they could stealth abolish the senate by making an internal rule giving each senators vote a weight of 1/2 their states population.

They benefit too much from the system being like it is, no one is changing poo poo like that. I'd rather random people be drawn from the populace to govern for one term than this poo poo where billions are spent trying to get the razor thin margins of voters to pick between two parties. This poo poo where congresscritters can get reelected indefinitely is mighty loving stale and leads to more garbage than good.

Stultus Maximus posted:Hey here's a thought maybe not gently caress over a bunch of underpaid teachers and instead fund social programs so that the only option for kids getting food, social work access, and education isn't being crammed into a plague incubator. Or fund hiring of additional teachers and aides so the classes can be split into safe pod sizes. I'm going to address this one: there is no space to split classes. Most school systems are ten years behind on construction priorities, so there is literally no space to split classes like you are describing. There's always more teachers, just stop drug testing. There's always more books, just replace less often. There is no magical extra classroom square footage.

Just like the other things Stultus mentioned, it's a matter of funding and priority. There are tens of millions of laid off people, and schools aren't exactly cutting edge construction. If we started half a year ago, schools could be much safer now. Instead the government firehosed cash at businesses as usual.

I know outdoor classroom spaces aren't ideal for a lot of the country, but wouldn't shifting the school year to everyone being home over winter instead of summer and holding class on the lawn while it's warm make some manner of sense? I see the occasional news piece about it, but never hear about any implementation into large systems, always just some wacky school in California letting grade schoolers mill around in the woods for a few hours a day or something, not setting up boundaries and rolling whiteboards onto the lawn. Kids don't need to be home all summer to work their video game crops, you can harvest those any time of year.

I can't speak to the science of the risk of school spread, but the resulting policy recommendation is inherently political. Excepting those populations in assisted living who have no option or ability to follow guidelines, seniors absolutely should be behind the essential workers who we are demanding put their own lives at risk to serve us. Even if current studies suggest they're at marginally lower risk of death than a senior who is either irresponsible or tragically has an irresponsible family, the frontline worker either deserves vaccination priority or generous hazard pay and proper investment in making their workplaces safer. Literally no one here is "mocking low-income families for wanting their kids to be back in school" (wtf?). Some are underrating the importance of childhood education. But if you're concerned about the kids, then take care of the teachers rather than seeking to write them off as "less likely" to be impacted by Covid.

FEMA has been activated to set up testing and vaccine locations, and it was recently announced that they will be receiving support from DOD. Vaccines are being distributed to CVS, Walgreens, Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, and several major other retail pharmacies and it is expected that they will start jabbing arms today. The federal government has increased the amount of weekly vaccines shipped to states from 10.5 million to 11 million. We are exceeding our goal of 100 million vaccinations in 100 days. We have invoked the defense production act to get J&J’s vaccine mass produced. We have ordered 100 million more vaccines from Moderna, increasing the total to 300 million. This is all in just the last few weeks and isn’t an exhaustive list. boop the snoot fucked around with this message at 17:03 on Feb 12, 2021 |

I haven't lost any close and dear members to Covid, and only have four friends or acquaintances that have caught it, some of which are still dealing with the consequences, so I can't say I know what you're going through, but I can empathize. I'm not gonna ask anyone to apologize for the anger they have for an issue, because - quite frankly - idiots in this dumb forum of ours speaking equally frankly on their experiences and emotions is what makes it actually genuine for me as a eurosocialistvet outsider. The only thing that I feel is bad is defaulting to emotionally-exhausted irony-posting, and I can't pretend I didn't do so in the past myself. poo poo loving sucks. Let's talk about how poo poo sucks, why poo poo sucks, and how we're affected by poo poo sucking.
