Down came the glitches and burned us in ditches and we slept after eating our dead.
I love cunos voice but something definitely seems off about the recording itself and I wouldnt mind if they fixed it somehow.

I'd love to say I trust them to still pick good new voice actors but I still can't stand the new portraits (I think they look goofy and not in a good way) so I dunno! Maybe I'll end up being a "purist" after all.

What if the new voice is so identical nobody would've known it was a different voice than the original unless the developer explicitly stated so as some behind-the-scenes tidbit

Oh gently caress, are those new portraits actually going in the final cut?! I thought they were just done different for the displate prints :stonk:

I don't like the new portraits, I definitely feel the old ones had more impact. I'm neutral on the voices - I never noticed any issues with the previous voices but I don't think I'm super attached to any of them except don't change the limbic system. Honestly I'm just excited for new questlines n stuff and I've been trying to convince my friends to buy it on discount so they can final cut cheaper.

What new portraits? The ones in Displate look the same to me.

Edit: Ok, I found this. Tbh I think Half Light and Suggestion are the only ones I'm not thrilled about. Rest is fine.

Edit 2: So are all the INT portraits completely unchanged or have they simply not been released?

Some of the old ones needed a little bit of cleanup for clarity, as I don't think they read well enough at the in-game size to communicate their concepts, but most of the updates just feel like what happens when you finish a great piece of art and then decide you're going to "fix" it after the fact.

Actually while I'm thinking of things I would've liked to see fixed, probably no one else gives a poo poo about this, but I wish they'd use proper typography rather than *chat room* style emphasis -- and lazy shortcuts. Use bold or italics and type a proper em dash, you savages. Also do another typo pass pls and ty.

Half-Light: KICK THEIR loving TEETH IN!!!!!

Encyclopedia: Improper preposition placement.

Half-light: YOU WANNA LOSE SOME INCISORS!?

Encyclopedia: "You" should only be used when addressing a separate entity. Being that we are both part of the same -

Half-Light: SHUT THE gently caress UP

Encyclopedia: -entity, it would be more correct to say "Would we like to lose our incisors?"

Half-Light: I'LL SHOW YOU THE MEANING OF FEAR

Encyclopedia: We already know the definition of fear: The aversive emotional response to threat.

I had very few problems with the voice acting quality and very many problems with the mixing, so I hope that got some attention

I'm actually not super pumped about getting full voice acting in the first place. More voice acting does not necessarily equal better to me. It's not a negative either, it's just sort of there. I tend to skip past voiced dialogue in most games once I'm finished reading it anyway, so that's probably why. I liked the amount of voiced lines in DE because it was enough to make an impression and add to the character and setting, but not enough for me to get impatient and skip through it because I don't want to wait another minute for them to finish their sentence. With such a dialogue-heavy game like this, that's even more the case.

I'm mostly excited about the new content additions, like the new copotypes and ideology quests. I remember them mentioning a new zone too but I haven't seen any more details about that yet.

I'm curious just how different the delivery will be for the various skills. Some bits where the skills are talking to each other could come across quite weird with the same actor if the delivery isn't at least somewhat distinctive.

I will fight you. This opinion is unbearably *wrong.*

Interestingly I usually loving hate when people play with typography and punctuation for no goddamn reason, I find it incredibly pretentious. DE's so strange, and by the time I noticed the asterisks I already loved it, so I give it a pass.

It's perfectly OK and good to give your writing a certain voice by adding emphasis and idiosyncrasy where needed, but like, just do that the proper way instead of the IRC way so it doesn't look like the game was written in Notepad.

DE is operating in the tradition and using the conventions of its genre, the wordy CRPG. Like it or not the genre style was irrevocably shaped by chris avellone making GBS threads asterisks everywhere. It's not something I personally really enjoy about the game but I understand why they did it

Vegetable
Oct 22, 2010

As a style nerd I think they really should use em dashes, but the asterisk emphasis retain a lot of charm imo. Anyway this will all become immaterial as the game becomes 100% voiced, a decision I'm still not sure about. Hate to sound like a stick in the mud but as the other guy put it:

I agree with the folks above about voicing -- I'm looking forward to the first little bit with each voice, but after that I'd just prefer to read it without hearing it. But I don't want to turn the sound off because the music is perfect for what the game is. It'd be cool if there was a toggle or something but this isn't exactly a dealbreaker.

I knew from the start I'm just going to click through most of the new voice acting, but it'll be worth it for the few characters where I want to hear their voice actor more than I want to just move on after I've read the text(Cuno, Jean, Cuno, maybe some of the stat voices if they do really good delivery for certain ones, Cuno).

The em dash is quite possibly the worst, most horrible piece of punctuation ever invented (far worse than asterisks for emphasis by an order of magnitude) and the fact that there exists people that don't just tolerate them but actively prefer them to any other option will never cease to boggle my mind.

Anyway,. I've got lots of friends who are holding off on their first dive into this game because they are waiting for the final cut, I am super excited.

It's short for the style's inventors, the Dancing Insulindian Socialist CO-operative. This is why all the best DISCOtheques have a Massive Communist (or MC for short) leading the show.

That's my boyfriend too. He's super interested in the game, but his dyslexia makes text-based games so much of a slog for him that they're no longer fun. So the voice acting overhaul has got him excited enough that he plans to actually sit down and play through it, and I am stoked. I really think he'll get a kick out of the game, and I'm excited to see his reactions to certain things.

You lost today, kid. But that doesn't mean you have to like it.

The em dash would be perfectly normal and uninteresting if windows keyboards had an easy way to type them. The fact that you have to either hunt down a weird shortcut or own a (generally) more expensive Mac makes them a class signifier. In this research paper, I will proceed to demonstrate that...
