A lot of religious art the patrons are used for the faces of the historical figures it was a workaround to get church approved portraiture. At some point they knew that the horns on Moses thing was wrong and some artists still put the horns on to imply something about their patrons marriages. They were probably not getting paid. Maybe they got a deposit, or a couple installments, but getting the final could be problematic. My favorite spite-work is on the monument to the Swiss Guard that died defending The Tuileries during the French Revolution. The monument is carved into a former sandstone quarry face in Luzerne, Switzerland. The contractees were quite slow with the promised cash, and once sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen realized he might not be paid, he altered the alcove shape a bit. I think I remember seeing an interview with lee about the hammer films and I gather he did not necessarily get on well with the people who made them, to the point he refused to speak any of his dialogue in one of them so he goes the whole movie without saying anything.

Nahh that was the Christopher Lee vampire films. He realised early how bad the scripts were so he just ad-libbed the entire time and growled and snarled his way through them, and probably improved them quite a lot.
