Nvidia is deliberately nerfing mining performance on its new RTX 3060 cards and is releasing dedicated mining cards without video output to try to stem the drain of cryptocultists on the GPU supply. Some good news out there related to the scam, at least.

You know who else ignored multiple warnings from more experienced people, defied "conventional wisdom", and generally was full of that "boy, everyone is stupid but me" energy? Timothy Treadwell, aka "dude who was eaten alive by bears". Makes u think

I knew someone who told me not to buy Amazon stock in 2003 because books were a dead medium and all they did was sell books. He swore by Ford stock because cars will never go out of style and the new Ecosport was blahblahblahblah. It's kind of like going pro in sports. Very few people actually that lucky to have their random guesses pay off.

Buying into it was always something I was skeptical of and also I did not have a lot of money to put into something speculative (I decided it would be a better idea to focus on eliminating all of my student loan debt... what a mistake!)

xtal posted:What if so far everyone has won? Which is basically a gamble. So if your HODL'd and continue to HODL, yes you win. As long as we don't have another massive drop and it goes back to, say, 1,200. I'll admit there's an added sense of legitimacy now that some organizations are moving to include it, but the crazy volatility is offputting. Mastercard could go and say "butts don't scale so we're ALL IN ON CARDANO" Do I wish that I had actually spent the whole 2 hours I looked into Butts in 2009 to get a miner up part time? Sure why not. Would I have held until it hit 50K (basically a 10 year investment)? Probably not man, I would have cashed out at 1,000 because why the gently caress would it climb higher? Like this is especially true when every other month we had stories about "Wallets hacked hundreds of butts stolen" and "MtGox founder died in rare Yacht-Orgy tragedy, GoxLedger mysteriously vanishes" FilthyImp fucked around with this message at 21:17 on Feb 19, 2021 |

Nessus posted:I had a similar thought process but my conclusion is that in all of the past steps when I might have engaged in butcoin related economic transactions, I had many good reasons - in addition to moral qualms regarding its energy production and use in genuine crimes - to not do so. If I knew in 2011 that this dumb poo poo would be happening in 2021, I would very well have done so, but at a certain point you are excoriating yourself for not being a literal precognitive. I agree. Bitcoin's originally stated purpose as a currency replacement will never happen and never looked like it would happen. Instead, the bitcoin advocates basically did some MLM stuff whether intentional or not and it resulted in Bitcoin become a gigantic speculative commodity. It never made sense to me as an investment but at this point it's reached such a level that it seems like it might just be self sustaining? All I know is in 2011 it was dumb and I didn't have much spare money so I don't regret not buying in. If I had thought about how dedicated the btc lovers were and how low the ceiling was, maybe I would have tried mining.
