I've seen a couple of posts laying out what a Senator/Rep actually does during a natural disaster: take calls from their constituents and make sure that individual needs are covered, and put pressure on actors on the ground. Like, when your Senator calls and says "Why is downtown Houston lit up while neighborhoods have no power?" it gets a lot more attention. Have a look at Beto O'Rourke's Twitter right now. Sure, it's self-aggrandizing, but things like calling seniors and making sure they're okay is actually useful. Beto's name gets attention and extra volunteers.

Cancelling a vacation to go shiver in his powerless office and listen to tales of hardship is retail politics 101.

Also if it becomes acceptable for politicians to jet off with their wealth and pass natural disasters in tropical luxury, then they have even less reason to care about making sure our infrastructure is prepared to handle them than they already do.

Even if Cruz doesn't give a poo poo about you, at least if he's shivering in his office too he might give a poo poo about using the incredible power of his office over federal funding to prevent himself from having to shiver in his office again.

could he even do this if he wanted to, considering Texas' insistence on maintaining a separate grid?

"texas" doesn't insist on this, it's something petrochem relentlessly lobbied for and got back in 2000, lmao

some people immediately realized where this was going even then:
https://consumerwatchdog.org/feature/history-deregulation-debacle

quote:

Further: "During some periods, it is in the generator's interest to withhold some power because in so doing it can drive prices up, according to Severin Borenstein, a professor of business at UC Berkeley and PX Boardmember. According to Borenstein, restructured electricity markets may have attributes where 'if firms of noticeable size are not exercising market power, they are doing so out of the goodness of their heart, and against the interest of their shareholders.'" (p.28).

Under deregulation, there is no incentive for companies to invest in construction of new generation facilities; indeed, doing so would undercut their ability to limit supplies and reap windfall profits. In a cartel-controlled market, the energy companies maximize profits by keeping supplies tight, a phenomenon known as "scarcity rents." The extremely high cost of power plants discourages others from entering the market.

We had this happen in Australia with our prime minister who went on a holiday to loving Hawaii during one of the worst bush fire seasons in living memory.

He's the prick in the blue shirt:

He tried to pull out the "there's nothing I can do on the ground over there that I can't do from here" and he was rightfully dragged over the coals for it, with everyone telling him it's called leadership.

When he finally came back (five whole days after being caught out) and visited the bushfire zones, every single person he met told him to gently caress off.

Yeah I don’t expect my representatives to actually get much done. I do expect them to have the good sense to act like they care.

In a job interview, we all know that the applicant wants money because money can be exchanged for goods and services. All the interviewer wants to hear is that they came prepared with a more interesting narrative. If they can’t lie to the gatekeeper, how can their boss expect them to lie to clients, suppliers, and anyone else it’s in their interests to lie to?

Well he's a direct descendent of her uncle so I don't know how you chart that on the incest graph. Also he was basically the foster son of her father, and I think he was basically a teenager when he met her.

Direct descendant just means male-line descent, right? Because everyone is a direct descendant of all their ancestors. In any case, that’s like first cousin level incest at worst, which is pretty good for oldschool monarchy. :v:

Add the generations between them, and it’s more like 8th cousins. The incest angle is a dead end, the groomer part is the real issue.
