There was a big Papers Please boom when they got permissions for that. Not everyone stuck with it, but that's just how it is. Hope more people do Obra Dinn next. Mio's done a playthrough but I think it's still hidden.

Why do they need permission to play a game? Does cover need to okay the content of the game to make sure it doesn't break branding?

Nitrousoxide posted:Why do they need permission to play a game? Does cover need to okay the content of the game to make sure it doesn't break branding? If you're a streamer that is under a company in Japan (not an independent streamer), you need permission from the IP holders before you can stream otherwise they can gently caress you with copyright strikes. This was a huge issue for Cover back last summer as Capcom did a couple of strikes on Mio's channel, forcing her on a long break while they got it sorted out. So now they're getting permissions, which explains why sometimes a bunch of Hololivers start streaming a game at the exact same time.

i seem to remember something a few months back where all the hololive undertale stuff got scrubbed for some reason, which strikes me as weird. did toby fox publish through someone, because i thought it was pretty much all him, and i cant imagine him caring very much if people stream his games.

The incident I talked about last summer forced Cover to private a shitton of videos, basically any game they didn't have explicit permission from. Toby Fox probably wouldn't have actually done anything, but if they didn't have permission they still hid the videos. I imagine they proactively got his permission recently. They're slowly (very slowly) restoring the old archives as they reach agreements for streaming.

Cover kinda overreacted and privated the entire archives of most of the talents, and then made them (speculation) go through and manually unprivate/get permissions for it. It took a lot of time, and most is still locked up. Here's a link to the current status of the archives: https://hololive.jetri.co/#/status

Probably more of a "better-safe-than-sorry" decision. They didn't exactly have the luxury of time to sort things out with Mio directly threatened to have her channel nuked and pretty much all of them potentially getting hit as well.

But also the Japanese version IS published through 8-4, who also did the Japanese translation/localization, so there is a company involved when the Japanese version is in question It's all Toby when it comes to the original PC release but I think the same company also did the porting for the console versions

I wouldn't say it was an overreaction. The Copyright Incident put Mio on 2 strikes basically overnight and took her out of action for month to wait them out. It super sucks what happened to Subaru but it was also too big of a risk to keep all the other archived content up in case Capcom or Nintendo decided to throw their weight around again.

There's a big difference between individual people streaming games for fun/profit and a corporation that commercializes people streaming your game for profit. Requiring permissions for that kind of use seems fair enough, especially since being a corporation of streamers opens you up to all kinds of liabilities that indie vtubers hopefully never really have to worry about because no one is going to bother suing them.

Shipon posted:Pochi and Lenri going over old 2ch ascii memes, good stuff man One of the quirks of Japanese copyright are that companies and people don't auto-lose their copyright if they don't enforce it. So even though the US has one of the best Fair Use laws in the world, they also force companies to enforce copyright infringements even if the company doesn't want to.

When everyone was playing through Sakuna I was mainly watching Watame and Mio playing through.
