I propose that what the letter X was to the late 90s, the letter i was to the 2000s. Everybody tried to copy Apple (badly) on the i-naming scheme. BMW named their infotainment iDrive, etc.

empty baggie posted:It also took a long time before Beastie Boys were considered to be anything more than a gimmick. They had some cred early on because they were one of the first Def Jam acts, but that good will went away once they left the label and moved to LA and Capitol Records. 3rd Bass was seen as the legitimate white rap act when Pauls Boutique came out, and even though that album is seen as influential today, it was initially considered a failure and was largely overlooked. I went back and listened to some 3rd Bass but while flow is good, that poo poo is corny.

gently caress third bass. I hate those bitches. A couple years ago, MC serch called in to the Howard Stern show a few times over the course of a few weeks or a month or something, and he apparently got pissed because nobody knew who the hell he was.

Eiffel 65 meant to be just Eiffel and the 65 was part of a phone number that accidentally got associated with it and became the name. The 90s thing with numbers was there being little or no explanation for the number. 1000 Maniacs conjures some sort of idea or image. Blink 182 was also originally Blink and just tacked on the number.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epnsRRPtoeU I think they perfectly mixed the campy nostalgia sci-fi themes of old italodisco, some elements of the darker synth pop of the 80s like Depeche Mode wrapped up in the (then) modern late 90s dance sound to make something unique.
