Amnesty didn’t disappoint compared to Balance because of the system, it was because it was way too ambitious while not having enough focus.

I thought it was because they wore their influences (Gravity Falls, etc) way too much on their sleeves w/ that one, way moreso than the individual Balance arcs being inspired by different films

Gravity Falls was not an influence on Amnesty. Clint had never even seen the show.

I can totally believe Clint when he says he never watched gravity falls because he’s an old rear end man, but I do not believe griffin if he says that the campaign wasn’t at least partly inspired by it.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Dragon Friends has started a new twitch campaign with no prior knowledge of anything necessary so if you are itching for experienced improv comics who have known each other forever play d&d except the DM is super experienced and can deal with their bullshit, I can strongly recommend tuning in. First episode is on twitch at the moment and will be on youtube on Monday, fair warning for twitch at least it takes them nearly half an hour to actually start playing.

Dragon Friends is fantastic. Captures a lot of what I most liked about TAZ Balance.

The lack of people recommending Drunks & Dragons/Greetings, Adventurers! is disappointing.

It's a good show! It's not a bunch of straight white
guys playing D&D, if that's the sort of thing one cares about. There are jokes, and for two episodes, Bananas Foster.

Greeting Adventurers is okay, it's down there with Nerd Poker. They push "nerd culture" a little heavy for my taste.

this is another reason I like it

I guess I basically enjoy funny group improv storytelling with some light dice/game to provide at least a bit of structure. I find audio fights with dice rolling and HP and stuff almost impossible to follow

I'm kind of the same. Fights can be fun and interesting if the players/DM can keep them moving. NADDPOD and Balance were pretty good about making fights and encounters interesting. I'm mainly really tired of so many Actual Plays incorporating "supposed to lose" or "the enemy runs away" battles these days.

I'm just sour on Graduation because it really has little in the way of either interesting gaming or funny goofs. People complaining about it having little in the way of gaming are missing the point, but I think they're on the right track in understanding that the show is missing something. Travis is new and reminds me of when I was first DMing, but he really bit off more than he could chew in wanting to get to very specific points he had planned, even if he did leave some parts of the campaign open-ended.

I liked Amnesty overall, but it really could have done with maybe some more monster hunting. That, or give the players walkie-talkies so when they split up, they could still riff off of one another like they would with the farspeech stones in Balance.

I should give Dragon Friends another shot. It was just another one of those casts like FaTT where I had problems because the poor audio quality made it hard to hear while listening at my factory job, so I really had trouble getting into it.

This shit's about to go off.
Fights are only fun to listen to when someone is blatantly cheating (Travis) or someone continually forgets how to add numbers (Clint) and the other players clown on them for it

Don’t they also (especially Justin in Balance) bypass basically all rules around preparing spells and cast times? (I definitely don’t mind that they do that.)

I don't know how high level they were by the end of balance, but 5e wizards can have tons of spells prepared. It's wizard level+int modifier, which by the end could easily have been 20 or so.

I mean the McElroy story is the brothers are funny and make good funny content but aren't actually that exceptional at other things. With popularity they then get shoehorned into doing things that they can do funny (good) but also with sorta mediocre competence (bad) and it becomes a mixed bag of content.

Well the new episode of Wonderful is interesting. Seems like both Griffin and Rachel felt the need to vent and soapbox, which I can understand. Glad they are okay. Sounds like a harrowing week or so.
