I'm guessing he wanted to be considerate to the other racers and make sure his bike was off the track for recovery so the track surface doesn't have to be cleaned. Also, maybe it isn't preferable to slide on the tarmac from a higher speed. While he likely would have been fine with gear they wear, maybe there's no easy way to do that, plus there's no way to control where you are sliding, he might slide right back into the bike. Getting as far away from the flames as possible while still riding and controlling the bike and then dumping it where it isn't going to go somewhere that could injure someone else was probably the best course of action.
