Yeah, the social links are probably the hardest existing concept to adapt to that concept, but I would like the idea of dungeons having a stricter limit on “we need to do this within a week” since they’ll be gone, and avoid things like “Futaba in a coma for 3 weeks if you do her dungeon early”

I was amused by how much like a Persona 4 arc Futaba's dungeon ended up being. She's the only one of the team to gain a persona by reconciling with and accepting her shadow and, like the P4 characters, how long it takes for her to recover from the experience depends entirely on how far before the deadline you finish her dungeon :v:

I’m replaying P5 with Royal, and drat it’s really good. Like I already really loved 5 but the new additions Royal gives are all so cool. And I’m only just past Kaneshiro so i haven’t even gotten close all the new story content.

This is the worst because there are two missable confidant hangouts on 7/29 and 7/30 (the aquarium and the planetarium, respectively). You won't get the invite if you went to the Metaverse on the day the invite text gets sent. So if you want to see those hangouts, you have to complete Futaba's Palace the first two days it's available - you can't even put it off for a bit longer to avoid the whole sleeping for 3 weeks thing.

Now that there's a dedicated Persona thread I'd like to point out how crazy good the openings for the Persona 5 anime are. They write a lot of checks the anime can't cash but I'm glad the anime exists because both of these songs rock.

Great OP; Persona 5 Royal is my first Persona game, and it is thick. But I'm loving it. Will I miss anything from P5R if I picked up P4G to play after?

The overworld you won't miss a thing, and the writing in P4G is at least as strong in P5. Moving via the Tokyo Tube Map is a lot more immersive than picking a region of your town and teleporting there IMO, but that's basically trivial. But just about everything in the Metaverse/the TV world is overwhelmingly better in P5R. Starting with the fact that every dungeon in the TV world is procedurally generated (using a different tileset), making it little more fun to explore than P5R's Mementos (which is admittedly overwhelmingly better than base P5's Mementos where all the floors used the same tileset). Oh, and there's no driving over shadows in the Monabus, which is inherently fun (and also P5R exclusive; the Ryuji autokill was reworked from something obnoxious and random in base P5 to something fun in P5R).

But it's the combat that was massively iterated on with P5R combat being far crisper and cleaner than P4G's, and P5R's being deeper and more interesting than P5's. Persona 5 first fixed the UI from a scrolling menu to one button mapped to each action. It then cut about two seconds off each spell by having the characters pull their animation and call "Persona" when you go into the spells menu rather than after you pick the spell. And that two seconds per attack adds up to a lot of irritation as your time is wasted by watching Chie spin-kick for the hundredth time. And then there were the mechanical changes. Persona 5 added both Technicals and Baton Passes/Sweeps, and P5R strongly iterated on them making them really meaningful for effectiveness. (The big problem with baton passes in base P5 is that you can't baton pass with a team mate unless you have Rank 2 with them - which of course the team newbie doesn't until after you've done their dungeon, and the shadows are in general vulnerable to the newbie's powers). Which means that P4G's tactics are mostly about saving your SP for the bosses and buff/debuff cycles. Oh, and Showtimes are a new thing for P5R, linking characters.

Personally I think I like the P5 cast better, but only by a slim margin. They're both fantastic casts.

Yosuke Romance Mod

In case anyone missed it last time around Christmas in the MegaTen thread.

I'd be more interested in trying it if I could also get the gameplay mod to work but I couldn't so that sucks.

Wasn’t Yosuke originally written to be a gay romance option? It at least puts some of the gay panic poo poo into context, like just the insecurity surrounding it.

The evidence that all of this pointed to an actual romance never really panned out for me tbh. The lines all seem like they're from separate unrelated scenes.

Considering Atlus’s track record with LGBTQ characters I don’t think I could trust them to handle a Gay relationship.

At least now. Maybe they can have a change of heart and write some good LGBTQ characters for Persona 6!

I mean, FF7 Remake took the Honey Bee scene which was originally a transgender/cross dress gag and turned it into a really amazing dance/music number and genuinely emotionally up-lifting scene about breaking gender norms.

Playing P5R for the first time after beating P5 back in 2017. They fixed the "he's a scum" line so imho it can only get better from here.

Also re: LGBTQ characters, if you can't be gay in P6 I will be very disappointed. My small rebellion is picking all the non-horny dialog options in P5R.

e: also I generally like all the P5R characters but Morgana is a huge creep from the word go with Ann and I don't care for it. I can't tell if the game wants me to think he's a creep or just wants me to think "haha he's so in love, that's cute"

He's not that big of a creep? He's annoying sure but he never pervs out. But maybe I'm just comparing him with P4's Teddie, who is so much worse that Morgana is not even in the same scale.

I think for me the boringness of Chie and Yukiko is offset by how much Rise, Kanji and especially Naoto resonated with me.

A couple special "one day only" things in P5R that are worth mentioning to anyone starting:

- Bring Yusuke to the jazz club on 9/4 and he can learn Charge. (You could also bring Ryuji but he'll naturally learn that later so it's kind of a waste)
- Bring Makoto to the jazz club on 9/25 and she can learn Concentrate. (Same as above for Ann--she'll learn it naturally later)

Both of those abilities take characters who are already pretty useful and make them some of the best party members. You can especially do some wild poo poo with Charge on Yusuke with his gimmick of having physical attacks that power up after a Baton Pass. Have him Charge up, then have someone else pass the baton to him and watch him just annihilate an enemy.

Also persona traits are a cool addition in Royal. Ryuji's is extra-bonkers--with his top-tier persona he has a chance to make anyone on the team's physical attack do +80% damage. Ryuji and Yusuke on a team together just wreck poo poo. Also it is very fun to watch Ryuji's trait make Joker's Charged-up Hassou Tobi do an extra 80% damage sometimes.

What's this about traits?

I've clear P5, but despite buying P5R on release, I've not touched it yet.

I haven't played much of Royal yet either, but from what I understand they added a passive ability to each Persona in Royal, this is above and beyond the eight skill slots. These abilities are stuff like "Ice spells cost less SP" or something like that.

Every persona now has an extra passive skill called a trait and some of them are pretty cool. They can be passed on with fusion, too. Some of them are small or situational (like Foul Odor, which makes it easier to land a status ailment after a baton pass), others are pretty huge (like one that lets you use ambush-only skills any time).

Party member traits tend to be about synergy and providing a passive benefit to the team. Everyone's healing spells are stronger when Morgana's on the team, Makoto makes it easier to land elemental status effects for everyone, Ann sometimes lowers SP costs for everyone, Ryuji has a chance to boost someone's physical attack damage, etc.

That's what makes Ryuji and Yusuke an insanely good combo. Give them both Charge (Ryuji naturally from leveling, and Yusuke from the jazz club) and now you have a physical bulldozer team.

Morgana is a huge perv and an rear end in a top hat ...but he’s also a talking cat that cuddles with you at night so that’s his saving grace.

I’ll reserve judgment on Teddy until I can play P4 but so far I haven’t heard anyone say anything positive about him.

*edit*

I’m also playing with Japanese voices so maybe that’s why Morgana seems less creepy?
