I remember when I was a kid, my sister playing some edutainment game on some older PC like Windows 3.1 or something, where you had to make a ladybug by putting together its parts piece by piece and at the end the ladybug would fly off. I always found it as unsettling as as it was interesting and I've wanted to revisit it but google just sends me Miraculous Ladybug pictures or screenshots of the old arcade game Lady Bug every time.

I wish I could find it because it sounds like an elaborate hallucination but I just vividly remember assembling a ladybug. I've tried a few times to find it over the years to no effect.

Try “Cooties,” a game I played at Memaw’s since I was two years old. It’s not originally a ladybug; more like an ant. But maybe it was a “girl’s version” like pink Leggos.

ninja edit: just saw it was on a late ‘80s PC. It sounds exactly like Cooties, though.

I've been trying to remember a different edutainment game, that probably dates to around 1992-1994 (based on what grade I was in when I played it), and I believe it was on Mac, and monochrome. The game was around teaching you about sea turtle protection/preservation, including protecting habitat on beaches, poachers, etc. I believe it presented you with still images and you had to click the areas of concern if I remember correctly? I have been unable to find anything via google....it could also have been a subset of a larger software package, but I don't remember specifically. Thanks!

Ah poo poo, I remember the turtle specifically on System 7/7.1, but I no longer have most of my floppies, and I don't currently have a monitor to hook up the old machines to see if its still one one of them.
Now I'm gonna be stuck trying to figure this one out too.

Fast-forward a while later, and I had forgotten what it was, the file name was no help and whoever ripped it cut the credits off presumably to save a few precious mb. Fast-forward to the early 2010s and when it was uploaded to my Plex server, it was misidentified.

Although I started to watch it a few times, I never made it more than 5 minutes into it before shutting it off thinking it was going to turn into torture porn that was popular in the 2000s. While I'm a big horror fan, that subgenre just isn't for me...but I don't know for sure that it was.

All I know is that it was a horror movie that most likely made between 2005 and 2010. It started off in the woods and there were two women who I believe were being kept in pits in the ground or similar. They escape and start running and are chased by their captor. They're both filthy and wearing tattered clothes and I feel like it's raining during the opening scene too.

I know it's not much to go on, but if it turns out to be more of a revenge movie than torture porn, I might finally watch this mystery movie just so I'll stop thinking about it every once in a while.

It was definitely PC, unfortunately, but I agree it sounds a lot like that, which is amusing. It was actually a mid 90s computer (I wasn't alive in the 80s) but the point still stands.

I'm searching for two jokes from the Late Night with Conan O'Brien. (1993-2009)

1)

In January 2005, 6'10" baseball pitcher Randy Johnson was traded to the NY Yankees. Around that time, or maybe around Opening Day in April, Conan ran a segment (possibly) called Things Uglier Than Randy Johnson and one of the items was Two Headed Randy Johnson which then cut to a crappy photoshop of Randy Johnson mid-wind-up with a second head. I'd love to see the segment again, or at least the crappy photoshop.

2)

There was a segment about misprints in print advertisements. Not actual misprints as they were obviously fake, but Conan pretended they were real. One of them was a video game advert. It was Samus from Metroid and Conan's reaction was like, "Hmmmm let's zoom in and see what he's saying" and when the camera zoomed in, there was a speech bubble reading, "MUST DESTROY THE ELDERLY!" IIRC Conan never actually used the words Samus or Metroid but it was definitely her.

HOLY poo poo EDIT, I actually just found #2 but it's terrible quality. drat this has been living in my head for like over 15 years god drat. Would love to see the actual segment or a high quality version of the photoshop.

I just found it on a Metroid fansite. They had this quote about it

quote:

"Must...Destroy...the Elderly..."

On the January 14, 2003 episode of Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Conan ran a segment called "Actual Items," where he usually shows items or advertisements with some sort of goofy message inserted in their wording. On this episode, he showed a Circuit City newspaper ad for Nintendo videogames which prominently featured Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion, with a sizeable picture of Samus on the page. Coming from Samus' helmeted cranium was a thought balloon that read "Must...destroy...the elderly..."

Not sure what exactly that thing is, but yeah it looks like ready service ammunition refers to ammunition stored to be ready for quick use.

Maybe this was some kind of dongle or tag used in connection with storage of 20mm ammunition. Here's a pic I found on reddit of a "20mm ready service" room.

The designation scheme is usually along the lines of "Cover, Barrel, [object name] [caliber]", in this case, I'd reckon that for a 20mm, it's probably a M1 or AN/M2 which were in use during the war by the US Army Air Forces and by the US Navy.
From what I remember, most covers were tied with strips, but I have seen pull rings on other non-mil covers that are similar, generally aviation related.

I don't recall US 20mm ammunition boxes having tags that hung off, either. Liberal use of stencils though.

Honestly, I'm inclined to think it's a post war fabricated souvenir that doesn't correspond to an actual item, just the phrase. The punch alignment marks are visible, and that wouldn't be the case if it was struck with a propper die, only when you are selecting and arranging the characters by hand

Mystery somewhat solved!

Do you have a photo of the contents of the toolbox by any chance?

The pentacle shaped tag, those are usually die punched and available as marking tags, so it's extremely likely he picked one up and marked it out himself as a keepsake.

Check in the box for a set of alphabet punches, they are usually between two to four inches long with a taper towards the face, and the face itself has a reversed relief cut of the character. There might even be a guide, which will have a cutout section just large enough in height to accommodate the punch, and usually about 6 punches wide. (the actual dimensions of the cutout will vary due to being specific to the punches used)

It's a neat little tag though

No, I since returned it to the Old Man because he realized there was something in it he needed but I am a total idiot and didn't snap any pictures. I do remember most of the contents though. There were tap and dies, a "c" metal stamp, a variety of socket wrenches and sockets larger than any I've ever seen, pin stock for replacing machine pins, various metal boring drill bits, a couple small hammers, a gapping wrench for some king of spark plug, a few very long screw drivers, twenty or so files of all shapes and sizes, and a set of various blunt chisels. It was cool as heck and I am dumb for not taking pictures.

Ah yes, well that's not too uncommon overall. Wasn't the easiest for men of that generation to talk about a lot of things.
My uncle went Armored and the extent he was willing to share about his experiences during the war were several of the guns he had been trained on once, mentioned in an offhand manner, and then refused to elaborate, and then once in his final few months, he pitched a fit at his care home about how he had put up with being ordered about in the army, and he wasn't going to take it anymore. (The nurses were trying to rouse him from bed to go and be social and sit in the common area, and he was just hiding under the sheet)

Rather a shame, but it's understandable. Would have been neat to know the story behind his working with the tools.

This is going to be a long shot, but here goes nothing.

In the early 2000s, my history teacher either shared single-panel comics, or maybe they appeared in some kind of textbook, but they depicted cartoony dachshunds in historical settings (like wearing Roman soldier gear or whatever). They have a distinct style to them that I can recognize when I see it, but I honestly don't know how to explain it, and I can't draw them from memory.

The only thing I've got going for it is that there's a drawing I made in high school of these dachshunds, except I can't even find that drawing at the moment.

I'm looking for a funny youtube video about ducks. It's like a spoof of early 2000s educational TV with visuals and a voiceover.

Things I remember:

2. Narrator talking about the third eyelid like "It's called the nictitating membrane. You may think this is disgusting, but remember, ducks think humans are disgusting."

Most of Larson's work was black and white, and quite simple overall, but in various strips of his the animals 'talked' both with speech balloons as well as the caption text.
but to confirm, the style the dogs are drawn in does not match, right?

The weird thing is what you described rings a bell for me, but not from a textbook and not from Larson either. I just can't place it.

Aha, after digging around a bit, I found the drawing I made back in school.

For all I know, that looks pretty accurate to what those dachshunds look like. If this is a recreation of an actual panel or something I made up, I cannot remember (I'm betting on the latter, though). All I remember is that there were a few dozens of these dachshund comic things I remember seeing.

There was a computer game I played when I was in elementary school between 1997-1999. It was some sort of top down strategy game that was probably set on mars(?). I remember the ground in the map having a red surface so that's why I think that, but I'm not sure. Also I remember there being some type of monster truck unit in the game. That's about all I have, but I feel like if I saw a screenshot of the game I'd recognize it. However I've scoured online archives for strategy games made nin that time period and I feel like I've looked at a screenshot of every strategy game that could viably be from that time period, but I haven't found a match.
