systemd obsoleted "learning linux" beyond knowing how to get around a shell prompt and install packages it's all the same, with a sprinkling of distribution-specific tooling on top

for container wrangling i've had pretty good luck with using k3s. it works fine for local single node usage while also apparently being fine with running on twelve moderately busy nodes each running ubuntu 20.04. i imagine it eventually starts to fall apart at some node count that i won't ever be reaching anyway

fedora. not particularly interesting really, but redhat realistically remains where linux is defined, and fedora is real good.

Arch is bad

just start out with ubuntu to see if things work good then use that as a baseline to see how other distros should work fedora might still be hung up on non-free firmware issues so if you have cheaper or nonstandard hardware then things may not work

just stick with mint honestly. the graybeards will tell you it’s trash but it’s by far the distro most likely to work without loving around with non-free firmware, broken repos and other bullshit. if you really want to get “into” it then arch would be your best bet.

sb hermit posted:but does the audio work, at least? Speaking of, my blue yeti microphone in Linux was for some reason picking up a bunch of feedback only on the right channel. So I had to mix up the left channel to both the left and the right since pulse audio did not offer an option to choose mono for the device. Pulseeffects (the app I’m using to do this) for some reason does not always pass along the sound stream that it’s modifying to do this though so occasionally I just get nothing even though pulseeffects is still showing the spectrum of the sound when I speak into the microphone. Anything that’s pointing to where the stream should be just gets silence.
