I was fine with DnD being worked into MtG because it's the same WotC umbrella and thematically DnD works in the MtG framework.

The ultra-geek in me is fine with a LotR set but it's still very weird and out-of-place (if you consider Dominaria to be the most "grounded" fantasy MtG has put out recently you can immediately see it does not mesh at all with LotR's fantasy elements), and that's even before we get to 40k and whatever future IP's get thrown in later.

Although Orks are GR and I won't be convinced otherwise :colbert:

my take on the d+d set has been that it's probably going to be a lot of generic creatures and the like that are setting-themed, with some godzilla-style promo frames with named creatures and characters, and if that's how they do LotR that also feels okay to me

they could take a swerve and put an actual Drizzt card in the core set this year and literal Gandalf next year, but i personally think that even with TWD's success they hit enough pushback that they won't do that. obviously people will have different ideas, but it's a long way out + we'll see when we get closer

Hello, yes! Is being very good day for posting, no?
I’m really down on the idea of sets with licensed IPs. Like, the Forgotten Realms thing was already kind of not great in my opinion, but at least it’s a WotC property. LotR as a full-on set? No. Just no. Those are settings that flat-out do not mesh together at all, and whoever had the idea doesn’t care about either one of them.

Why do settings meshing together matter at all? Its not like Fake Greece and Mirrodin mesh together.

Not in the “same world” way, no, but in a same multiverse way, they do. The different planes are all pretty high-magic, which makes sense when the assumed role for the player is “powerful planeswalking wizard”, and your recurring characters are also planeswalkers. LotR is much more low-magic; any spellcaster you see is in one way or other an actual divine being. It just doesn’t mesh to me as “and then there is the plane of Middle-Earth”. And 40K is even more extreme for this kind of mismatch.

Honestly I don't understand why they don't just make these tie-ins alternate art. It'll sell for a lot and not actively piss off the people who don't like how this ruins the established MTG lore.

The Godzilla stuff for Ikoria was perfect. It just boggles my mind why they're forcing this. I like LOTR but I'm not sure I like the idea of using Frodo to block Emrakul.

I kinda miss when there were lots of different CCG/TCGs using wildly different mechanics by lots of different companies using different IPs instead of having them all consolidated.

Take me back to 1997, please. Also fetch me some warm milk and my blanket and play me some nice familiar music while I wait to die alone.

i think because core sets never sell particularly well, so why not slap LOTR on it and see if that makes people buy boxes

It's pretty wild now that I think about it that I played Magic from 1995-2000, left it behind for 20 years, and it's only now that I'm getting back into that it's actively incorporating other IPs.

It remained remarkably pure for a long time.

it could also be that there will be the four usual expansions, the one "supplemental" one (MH/conspiracy/commander legends/etc); and a new "IP cash grab" expansion

can't imagine they won't be legal in vintage/legacy at least

something about it just made me think of the transformers and the pony promo cards, honestly. that, plus some of the dev chatter about the walking dead cards being 'the ip holders wanted people to actually be able to play with these cards,' makes me think of the midpoint being 'supplemental standalone playable sets with those IPs as theming and the MTG framework'

either way i feel like i'd give it a week before they say something more about what they're doing with the IPs

Once again, Warhammer Age of Sigmar seems much closer to MTG than 40K in this regard, since it includes basically some primitive blackpowder/magical ranged weapons but is in essence fantasy or renaissance.

Kind of bizarre, but if moneymaking is the primary consideration for these crossovers then 40K makes sense.

I'm curious about Keyforge's state myself. I think people are still playing each other online with third party software but they really need to make an official Arena type game where you can play other people with the decks you've bought and scanned into their app. I was only playing casually with one friend. He was going around to tournaments for a while but they died down even before COVID. Goons in the Keyforge thread said stuff was still happening in their areas but again, that was pre-covid.

They do have a new set scheduled for next month.

yeah it this

they can even fix everything by making the other universes use other mana (like 40k uses Warp Power and LotR uhhhhh Fellowshipness?)

It would be more cool if they kept it abstract and made the cards lyrics in the world-song and set everything in the primordial vagueness of the more biblical sections of the silmarillion. You could keep the color summoning and ludicrously high magic themes of mtg better than, here's saurumon, hes white.
