It sounds good, but we should probably test it just to make sure that the blank spaces aren't hiding something like "Everyone hit by this and fails a will check die instantly". Maybe the next time we go scavenging and stumble across a wild animal.

The crowned rat leans in close. Roma and Amora crowd at her back, while Sauber looms at her from the right. The kitten and Chips jump up onto the table and sit attentively, while the Dimensionalist folds his hands, still with that lipless grin. You keep sipping your wine. It's really good. "You are no Fae looking for the name of a maiden to steal, no? Obvious I am Rita, heir to the throne of Vermillion in the glory of my conquering exile. You are Sauber, you are his two elder sisters, you are the Priest of Daoloth and they speak all for themselves - and you, the sweetest villager with the cat nature and good humor, corrawny?" Wh- oh. Yeah! Sure. You raise your wine glass in response. For all they know by now, you're a cat in a very clever outfit. Dream on. "This is the secret which I know. The Company, our dearest Marshall, our kindly Carter, the loveliest Dark. They have the intent of Conquest Behind The Throne. Friend to all who walk in power as we. Say they aspirations to Kadath! Imagine! I believe it. I know from other gossip that their Iron WEAPON program is real. Living Pact with Cold Iron! Unspoken cowing of the Fae. I have not known if the Stone WEAPON is real, but I-" Sauber interrupts "Wait!" ... Oh. It's nearly midnight! Probably 9pm. The secret took so long to hear and digest, and you have no idea what it even means. You're hungry again, and you've sipped down the last of your wine. There's... so many stars... DREAMING: [ ~ ][ ~ ][ ~ ][ ~ ][ ~ ][ ~ ][70%] Everyone rises to depart. You approach the first step of that higher threshold. Where the logic of a dream intersects with a fully lucid mind, creating a flow of thought and Dreamland that feels like a continual euphoria of deja vu. Of course it's almost midnight. You're finally here! At an Ultimate Place. Artificial, sure, unearned, yeah, but it's still one true, made possible by Ulthar for you. This was the most important place in existence right now, and you stand among those who walk the mountain of Great Ones. You don't have to raise a red fist- it's simply assumed you already do so in your heart, among these apex royalty. You could just be you, free inside a mask, Tyrant worn just as a crown. It is liberation and everything you want from a dream. ...except for Red and Blue, and all those people who cheered for you... Ah, but it's fine! Really. The Moon is so BIG as it rises over the Dreamlands. Your jade-stained biology is hammering a mitochondrial song into your dreams, full-align to Mana and surely healing by the second. You can fall down into the dream, and let that flow take you to the conclusion of being privy to the powers of the new world. See? Look at that. You've already shook hands with all of them in parting. Even Santek is being a pal. The Silver Mind is awake and is reflecting the most strangely clear images into your dreaming mind. You'll see them at the Auction, right after you escort your entourage to their proper room. The sylvan woman is there when you and a carried Chips leave the crystal sphere, her back turned to you. One quiet motion and you're following her down the hour-hall to where Ulthar is staying the night. There's no need to see it, no need to go in. You simply have to wait at the door as the freshly-slept, fed, and groomed Council makes their exit and reconvene - they found the room by way of the scent of catnip. It's proper that Chips be pretty messy and slightly stained with puke. That's what he DOES. The Cat What Swims In The Ground moves effortlessly through the dark marble floors, giving off his least of gold light as he examines your readiness for midnight. He heard everything Chips told him of lunch. You don't have to ask how he feels about your conduct- his ripples in the ground grow powerful with his purring. It's time. You follow them all as they wind down the hall, an endless night-visage walk before you meet up a third time with the blue-dressed sylvan. She sees you for the last time as she opens the waterfall doors to a lovely circle seated elevator room; inside is the kitten, already mewling and waiting. The doors close as the car begins its hours-long ascent up to the peak of Eaumur. Thank God. You can take the time to use the provided heater and fold-out iron table to do a little pressing of your clothes. Just a little cleaner, a little more comfortable. But such was your peasant-crow guise for this night, just barely meeting the minimum standards, carried only by the measure of your walk and the gravitational silence of your intent. It was true, and so it was felt with a dreaming certainty- Black Crow CHAMPION. Chosen By Ulthar. You manage a short rest and finished digestion, petting the cats while admiring everyone's dress uniform look. Though it was Prince Cattington's forte, it was the job this night of EVERY cat to wander around and force people to pet them while they begged for food. A few, like 9th, would stand more dignified and not react when petted. She loves pets, but it was important for the more hard-hearted types to admire her seeming lack of care for their attentions. It drove them to give even more attention. Your job was the same as at lunch- mingle, listen, eat a lot of food, run interference, and makes the auction choices. Also pretend to be interested in people talking a lot, thinking it'll somehow get back to the cats (who already know anyways) and affect Ulthar. Take all calls. Do not give your name, which has been taken care of by the Duke since he recognized you as the Ambassador. Have fun. The doors open. One hour to Midnight.

I dunno, I can imagine the game throwing us a bone because of the cats of Ulthar and the magical dreamland pills. Then again, it also raises the question of if we lose the lucid dreaming state at 100% Dreaming.

OST: Magnificence, Class, Distinction The Silver Mind posted:Telepathy and dream pass by the dark cloud of the midnight crowd. You're listening in on the thoughts of two employees standing by the wall, which is made of meteorite that supposedly came from moons that orbited the Black Throne. Incredible rainbowstar gleams under its glittering black exterior. You're going to walk among the powerful ones. DREAMING: [ ~ ][ ~ ][ ~ ][ ~ ][ ~ ][ ~ ][ ~ ][80%] This means enduring the dream-logic sight of luxurious atrocity. Dozens of them - look, see there that one lovely lovely crystal cage? Who can tell what's inside? But there's the telltale sound of the nonstop shredding of meat that can't stop reforming, oh a lovely blood pate dispensed for guests of discerning taste. Or there, a faerie on a chain whose entertainment for a small crowd is to read from a book, each page detailing the End of a world, the words cursing the reader to make them feel the weight of each apocalypse, read with a weeping whisper. Oh, there's a thousand tray runners making the rounds with goodies as well. You try your best to guess at safe ones, and end up with a glass frogbox martini and some kind of chocolate wafer. You're expected to walk along the great three-curved edge of the immense party, to see the Items Of Interest on display for trade, sale, and coming-soons. The one... that Amey suit. They're there, right there, next to a gold-dim complex of glass cases and alloy meshes, speaking to a hundred-strong audience. They're doing the sales pitch. You're too far away to hear, but the Silver Mind is reflecting the colors of their fine voice right through the back of your skull. "...Of Interest, Carter #260, Property-Class, which used to be a library. Sold at a reasonable price, with easy installation into the waking or dreamed location of your choice. This scale model is representative of the structure, which at some point in the prior existence, was a library." Silent thought and regard. Already you're a minute's walk down the curve to the next thing on sale. "Marshall #4273, Adornment-Class, the Bronze Crown of Dyrovepreva. A practical and tasteful asset to intellect, and a known conductor for inspiration. A modest entry piece for newcomers to the MC&D lifestyle." So it goes, on and on. The minutes to midnight stretched out into hours of talk and sell. There is a Mellified Man. Black opals. A sheet of completed music writ in blood. A coffee machine. The relic remains of a Hero. Silks from Kadath. A large many-eyed bird. A glittering black ring. The exclusive rights to Nightmares About Teeth. Nothing Ulthar cares to afford. Your heart spins at the possibility of access to such wealth, the power it could afford you... but you're trapped in the dream, unable to do more than long for such a living. Besides, that wasn't the real thing Ulthar was going to bid for. There are three big ticket auctions happening - soon! Soon! When it was midnight. Three things, one of which has been left to you to choose to bid on. You have to make up your mind about it now, and hope you can find a way to afford it. It wasn't a necessity... but it would make Ulthar happy. But which item? Even then, that wasn't all! Such was the MC&D guarantee. Always more, and it's always better; there's a raffle included for all guests. A raffle to win the rights of access to their new artificial spirit animal. It's by getting your ticket that you meet with the Duke again, who stands alone with a drink as he reads his number with keen eyes. He sights you, and greets you. "Ambassador! And your friend, hello again." What frien- !!!!!!!! The Pitch Black Cat has been there the entire time! You sigh in relief, and raise your martini to click with Sauber's while he kneels to give tribute to the shadowy cat. But it's in that moment that he finally has your cornered. "I have been thinking, Ambassador. I find the scent of your blood to be pleasing- proper and understanding. It's a joy to know Ulthar has made a smart pick for this event, and I would like to discuss the extended offer of an alliance. I would be pleased to have it personal through you, Ambassador. With your witness of the Council here, if you make it official, I'd seal it with the offer of having you to my home as a guest in the future. You could meet my family! There's would be joy to know we have an understanding with the Cats of Ulthar. You could see the Lovely Fields, bathe on the red stones, enjoy our cooking; it'd be a very entertaining time." "What do you think, Ambassador?"

Things to consider with these choices: A masterless sword, a ghostly flower, and a bloodstained shield. The thing about this bid is...unless I’m overthinking it, whatever single thing Ulthar bids on sends a signal to everyone else about where their priorities/values lie. A bid for a sword generally reflecting aggression, a bid for a shield generally reflecting preservation, and a bid for a flower...could reflect many things depending on what makes it special, but compared to the other two, it is generally more passive, though it must be powerful in some way. Of the 3, a flower would probably be the most interesting to cats; they like smelling strange things after all. But a masterless sword is also pretty emblematic of Ulthar, who cannot be controlled and are just as double-edged towards those who would use them. The sword would send a strong message to the others about how they should be treated. edit: OTOH, I suppose rejecting the sword and shield would send a message of “we fear no aggressor, and seek no conflict, for we are powerful enough without these relics.” The second choice....again, as tempting as the lionheart option is, a pact is a big deal. If it doesn’t scare the duke into calling the deal off, it could burden our cat friends, who value their independence, with displeasing restraints and obligations in the future. And besides, raptors or not, lizards are often the prey of cats, not fellow predators. Polite rejection is not a bad option here, IMO. The problem with lying is that basically we’d be stepping into the world of Crafty Scheming, in a room full of people who are waaaaaaaay better at Crafty Scheming. And also just saying yes is out of the question since we can’t afford to lose HP. So in my mind it’s either politely reject or pact (and the best result from a pact would be it scaring him into calling it off). FAT BATMAN fucked around with this message at 22:10 on Feb 25, 2021 |

I voted masterless sword because it represents who Ulthar is a lot better than either the shield or the flower, and because there's always the chance we might end up with it. Santek talked about a Pact with Ulthar in our memories of the Holy End: "I'm happy the Pact with Ulthar is going well. Daoloth will be content when that becomes formula." We also know that our patron did the same, so pacts presumably aren't exclusive given that I don't think we've ever been working for Daoloth. At the moment I'm assuming it's a strong and binding alliance, and that the cats would be potentially interested in joining one since they've done so "before". They've been getting on well with Sauber, and they're clearly on good terms with him given how they entered his room and how he was visibly delighted when he found them there. With that in mind I'd be inclined to try the pact, especially what with how absurdly good our will is. (19!) e: Also, importantly, from the Blue Book: "...handful of times on record. It's difficult to earn his respect, but if won over, he can teach rare techniques; Vorpal Fang is the most prized of them, followed..." I think this may refer to Sauber, given how many teeth he has. pumpinglemma fucked around with this message at 22:17 on Feb 25, 2021 |

I say we go all in. The fact that it's even an option means it's probably a good idea - remember that we've got an experienced player running the show on the real world level of the story. If we have something wildly out of nowhere like this that means it's probably a decision rooted in metagaming. If they decide to aggressively go for a Pact like this, that means there's a reason to be forceful about it.

"AMBASSADOR!!" VOTING TRUNCATED - THE DUKE'S OFFER [-HP] Yes. - 0 [Lie] Sure. - 0 Ulthar must politely refuse. - 2 "I do not accept refusal." [Lionheart] [Contest of Will] Yes, and we will have a Pact of that bond. - 20 "I do accept courage." "I won't wait any longer, Ambassador! I can smell the desire brewing in your veins. Do you understand my title? I am the Generous Of Blood. I understand intent." The Pitch Black Cat is unseen witness. You stand tall, looking up and out from the crow mask as the Duke carefully removes it with two crescent claw tips. Sauber sees your face, as you have seen his. Eyes lock. You know his Name. Now, here, among star and stroke of Dreaming Midnight, when all dreams reach their apex of strength, there comes the demand for understanding of how strong your intent really is. There is a demand for satisfaction. (CONTEST) (WL - This Is Sauber's Intent) 18 - [5]+[5]+[5] = 15 - Success (By 3) (WL - This Is My Intent) 19 - [5]+[3]+[5] = 13 - Success. (By 6 - Victor) The Duke breathes deep, and carefully places your mask back on. You feel a surge of midnight in your heart, of red in your fist. You earn with dreaming high your title as Ambassador. As Singer. You earn equal footing, from soul seeing soul, to Duke Sauber himself. It unfolds, softly with the exchange of intent, and the earn of predator understanding. It becomes a silver-coated vision, the tell tale of what the Third Eye sees. The Silver Mind posted:The Psychic was smiling. Dreamily? He takes off his glasses and remembers as he tells you- You put out your hand. Palm open. The Duke says, "I am exceptionally pleased with Ulthar's choice of a representative. I recognize Ulthar's strength, and its intent, and its continued right divine to remain in peace in their Kingdom and in lands dreamed beyond. I recognize by Pact with you, Singer, the share of my Power." His mighty hand goes palm-first down over yours. You keep eyes locked from behind the mask, as the Duke pierces his own hand with the vorpal of his claw, and then through to yours. Your blood is Pact. You both kneel, low low low. Down near the gemlit starry floors, the entire universe reflected from the Moon-witness sky above. You both offer your wounded hands, kept close together. The Pitch Black Cat places a paw down, and with casual sadism and reminder of the Cat Nature, rips and pulls a vicious scratch simultaneous across your punctures. The bloodsoaked paw is licked clean. That is where Duke and Singer stand under Ulthar. But those hands, stinging with cat fever, would now never falter to pet the back of any under the Kingdom's know. There would be recognition. There would be aid. There would be demand. There would be expectation. All with confidence. You're both capable, smart. You feed cats. You pet cats. You let cats come and go as they please. THAT is smart. That's exceptional and recognized. That is appreciated and anticipated. Also, Sauber and his 999 sisters live where there's heated stones and lots of light. So that's just a very obviously smart pick, Singer. Good job. "Rise with me, Singer. Let's share a match in the auction. Tell me what you've chosen to bid on!" DREAMING: [ ~ ][ ~ ][ ~ ][ ~ ][ ~ ][ ~ ][ ~ ][ ~ ][90%] [You have made a Blood Pact with Duke Sauber on behalf of Ulthar.] [You are now Friendly with Duke Sauber (and his 999 Sisters)] [You have earned the respect of Ulthar.] [You are now Allied with Ulthar.] [Earned the right of access to Cat Arts & Predator Arts]

Chosen to bid on? Well. You had to make a Pact. You had to fulfill the Dream Quest of Ulthar. You actually did it. You really did earn your walk. But the point is, you missed a few of the auctions already. First, you're pretty sure you heard, was this auction for a sword. The Masterless Sword. With special-design lockdown case of the standard 17 seal variety, to ensure safe transportation of a divine superweapon. Such a sad, lost, lonely sword. Hungry hungry hungry sword. Whatever legend it once came from was now long over and forgotten, lost to the times before. It was a Heavenfell Blade, an Antediluvian Sword, a maker of Kings and slayer of Nephilim. Oh the corruption of its raw LUST to be held with such heroic intent one more time. Who bought it? Didn't catch it. Cursed thing. Dread strength. But then, just now- a Bloodstained Shield. Dark Series was only THE Best (Of The Best) Of The Best. This was no exception. It demanded curse, it demanded sacrifice, it prayed for death after death after death to let it forget its yearn for a holy nature. But it could be worn down. It could be bled clean. It'd take a lifetime of war to break it, but what was time down here in the Dream? What a tremendous weight it would be to hold it up, that lustrous bloody gold gleam. Loveliest of that Power Red Gold. It was the mark of a legend and it was going going GONE. So. You guess. You're going to be bidding for Ulthar on... uhm... What's the last item?

But the IOI that was chosen for the Auction... the number wasn't displaying right. No idea what it could be. The Masterless Sword and Bloodstained Shield were typical Auction gambling fare. Big risk for big reward. The Masterless Sword did carry a recorded Ranger onerun especially far - all the way to Paradise, where it ended. But that had been a wild case of two-thirds lucky RNG. Nobody has ever managed to deal with the Bloodstained Shield. So, no, what is the actual Auction item pick? While it loads, the raffle RNG results comes up.] (Raffle!) And of course, immediately after I say we can probably rely on the players judgement, this happens. Goes to show exactly how reliable metagaming is in a story like this (ie not very lol). Something tells me we're going to ve seeing exactly what caused that four solid minutes of screaming and pleading for ourselves. And we'll probably be getting the blame for it too. Maybe this is the event that caused that massive amount of negative karma in that other playthrough, implying that there's some sort of continuity between playthroughs?

You ever... Ever wake up from a dream, that for just one second after it ends, you could have SWORN was your real life? There you are with that feeling again. The door is still wide open, cool rains gusting in. Your body splayed on the stone floor, drenched and shivering. You cry out from the pain of stiff limbs, forcing yourself to sitting - eyes nearly swollen shut from the force of your weeping. Voice hoarse and heavy from wailing. You drag yourself up to throw the door shut. You collapse immediately after, and with final plea you crawl to Kwiat's cage. She's there. She's alive. She's in your aching arms. You hold her in silence, as the rains soften outside. You hold her close, and tell her you love her. You don't know why your heart is screaming. You don't know how your dream ended. You only remember the final second. That last image... quote:I was... You repeat it a thousand times while you hold Kwiat. Please. Please. Please. God. Please.

I think the Hyena might be the Holiest Knight, actually.quote:An invitation to mingle with the movers and shakers, under guise of being Ulthar, will let us have our cake and eat it too. I'm surprised they took the Miner along. Her ironblood is going to be a challenge to everyone's magic nature." We know they're an ironblood, we know they named us (in the Holy End continuity, I presume, since we seem to be unnamed here). We know Merkja is also an ironblood, so that's a correlation right there, however weak it may be. I also think the Holiest Knight might be Mom. Or at the very least they might be different Hyaenidaes. quote:I was... I mentioned earlier that we were a passover, having moved from a different world to this one. Perhaps it was a literal rebirth into another world. This last scene reads to me like we're a literal infant and the Hyena is our mother figure. Which would explain why we were bawling our eyes out while in the dream and freaking the player out during those 4 minutes, as I assume this must be a very nostalgic memory for the protagonist. And if this is true it raises the question of what would happen if we died here as well. Our conversation with the squire mentioned that he had been trying to become a knight across "countless lifetimes", so maybe if you die in this plane you reincarnate? Who knows. It'd help explain the ZEN part of the title, at least. anyway thanks for reading my post in which I explain why @ [ZEN] -Hell End- was actually an Isekai all along. part 2 will consist of a 5000 word essay on why I feel our protagonist is actually a japanese salaryman who met a tragic accident involving a truck and became the strongest lvl.99 badass in the whole island, stay tuned Grond fucked around with this message at 01:29 on Feb 28, 2021 |

Kwiat is peacefully asleep in your arms, lulled by the stone-dulled roar of a now-torrential downpour. You bindle her up and set her down while you work your way through a can of school food, still vaguely fed from the dream of what you think was fish and chips.
