Oh man. We had Street Lethal on cassette when I was younger. I had completely forgotten about them, but reading the name now brought back the memories. Gotta listen to them and see if I still like it now.

That's the other album I bought. Street Lethal and Technical Difficulties.

I came for the shred guitar, and I'm staying for the cheese.

That's the thing. I expected most of the songs to be about cars, but they're not. A few love songs in there, a few about general "gently caress yeah rock n roll", and so on.

Yeah, most people seem to remember Weird Al's peak years as pretty wholesome, but between that song (which is a lot of gore/physical cringe) and Good Old Days (which is about torture), he had some pretty disturbing content.

Right? I love his gear walkthrough where he talks about how he has a small-scale guitar tuned in octaves on a stand that he just does a single one-hand solo on as part of the act, but goddamnit the song is just lovely wankery.

I'm giving Second Heat a listen, but it sounds a lot... harsher? More flat? Trebbly and lacking bass? Compared with Street Lethal and Technical Difficulties, anyway. Is that just the upload, or was it just mastered like that? (Or just me?)

fizzymercury
Aug 18, 2011
Second Heat is kind of all over the place. I have an original pressing of the vinyl and it's amazing and rich. The tape I have didn't hold up well, but it definitely sounded great in 1991. A couple of the songs, most especially Moonage Daydream just always sounded like the sound was turned down a little and Gilbert hosed with his pedal board right before recording. Also it was meant to sound "bar gritty" or some poo poo so it was kinda washy.

The release of the CD somewhere around 1995 had a bad master used that was lightly degraded and that's what ends up on the internet. Spotify and Pandora have better recordings of it than youtube. And like everything Gilbert does the live versions sound better even if it was recorded at a lovely club.

Epic give away games for free as an incentive to load up their launcher. It works on me and I periodically see what they are offering.

Just browsing their store I had an "old man shouts at cloud" grumble in my head that I wish they would just use a "real" currency to show their prices as I couldn't figure out how good/bad the deals were. "I don't care about your stupid epic bucks".

Going into the options to change it I realised that the symbol was actually for japanese yen which I had somehow never seen before.

It also means "a raised mark or scar on the skin from a burn or wound" (similar to 'welt') so in that sense you weren't far off.

I only know that because "Commonwealth" comes from "common weal" which was in some old book I read once.

Like you, I thought it was a bad thing and related to "weals" which is a "a ridge on the flesh raised by a blow".
