I have a new bike coming in 1-2 weeks (not an Ibis) and one big reason I jumped now is that I could get a Shimano setup I wanted on it. I'm not sure sourcing Shimano parts is gonna get any easier until the bike boom eases in a year or whatever e: my experience with GX RD is that it shifted fine until it didn't and now I'm struggling to get it to acceptable so I can sell the bike. Most of the time it's fine and then it starts screwing up, it's aggravating. I'd rather have the Shimano reliability. That said if Shimano parts weren't available for a long time I'd still consider going GX if you wanted a bike sooner rather than later Levitate fucked around with this message at 14:24 on Feb 25, 2021 |

So a shop got back to me with a build they can have done by June. It's a bit more than I want to spend though. They can only get Fox suspension at the moment so that drives the price up a but over the stock DVO. What would you guys recommend downgrading to trim the cost back a bit? -Xt Drivetrain -Bike Yoke Revive 2.0 dropper in your choice of length -Pro CNC stem and carbon Tharsis 800mm handlebar -Fox Factory 36 fork and Fox Factory X2 Rear shock -Pick of Maxxis tires-we usually do the 2.5 Minion Dhf and 2.4 Dissector -Ibis S35 Carbon Rims -DT Swiss 350 hubs. We feel like these are superior to the stock Ibis hubs or the I9 hubs We build our wheels in house so we can do any rim/hub combination you would like. If I went down a group set from XT to SLX would I lose much besides being able to shift gears while shifting?

As mentioned if you can get SLX that would save some money and I suspect you wouldn't lose anything you'd notice, SLX is supposed to be real good. Can they only get Factory stuff or can they get Performance? Could probably save a chunk with good alloy rims rather than carbon too. I think you get some ride quality improvements like snappier feel, lighter weight, but I dunno that it's like going from skinny shallow alloy road wheels to wide deep light carbon road wheels e: DT 350 hubs are kind of a benchmark of reliable quality hubs that aren't expensive so I'd probably stick with those

They are only selling them with Factory unfortunately, going to SLX saves around $500 and is functionally identical but a pound heavier. So that definitely seems worth it.

Personally I'd go SLX + XT shifter, performance elite vs factory (just coating difference), alloy bars (carbon bars scare me having gouged some alu ones), full DT wheels might be cheaper? I'd go alu rims vs carbon but again personal preference. Keep the maxxis tires, DHF + whatever rear you want is a classic combo. e:missed a post about the suspension

SLX + XT shifter is the dogs bollocks. If you want to save more money then go full Deore with XT shifter, the only downside is little more weight but you have that savings for carbon wheels. I'd much rather have a heavier cassette and lose rotational weight in the rims. e: Something else that just occurred to me after my last post is what brakes they're offering. Are they XT 4-pistons? If I were min-maxing with my own money I would run Deore + XT shifter with the carbon wheels and take the money savings from Deore vs SLX to run the biggest brakes and rotors I could. The benefits of carbon rims and bigger brakes way outweighs the differences between XT and Deore, let alone SLX and Deore. As already said, the only bit of XT that's worth spending for is the shifter. ee: on my own bike I went full SLX with XT shifter (Deore hadn't been released yet) and used the money savings to get a set of Zee boat anchors with 203mm rotors. This is all nice to discuss and all but the real answer is take whatever combination of parts they can actually put on a bike and get you. Shimano is out of most of that and has crazy lead times.

Thanks for all the help. Ended up going with slx + xt shifters. Got it somewhere close to my budget... Well enough to make it work. Does anyone here have one? I'm a bit torn on sizing. They had a M AF that I rode around the parking lot of the place. It felt good standing up but felt a little cramped seatrd due to the super steep seat post. I felt like I was very upright while pedaling. I think I should probably size up and the bike shop employee agreed, but I'd like a second opinion. They didn't have a L in stock so I didn't get to try one. I'm 5'9 with a 30" inseam. All torso and arms. Short legs. My current bike is a '17 canyon spectral in M and it fits well.

I'm 5'7" on a medium with a 29" inseam and I like it just fine. Stack is maybe a little bit high but I prefer more a more upright position while seated so that doesn't bother me. Thanks for the advice everyone. I got my build pretty dialed in at this point. 90% sure I'm going to go with a medium. SLX + XT shifter, ibis hub carbon rims. Leaning towards Fox suspension but has anyone ridden the DVO? I'm not sure if the Fox upgrade is worth it for me. I'm generally a set it and forget it kinda person when it comes to my suspension. Occasionally I'll change the rebound based on the trail but thats about it.

I have a DVO Sapphire D1 on my Chameleon and like it very very much. For me at least, the off-the-top setting is better than anything Fox or Rockshox has for increasing plushness for high speed chatter. The fork starts to move when you breathe on it, super smooth, no stiction. If you want something for big hits, I can't really comment on that since I don't ride my hardtail on those kind of trails but its been great on rocky/rooty trails and tech climbs and rock gardens. I am pretty sure the OTT and Damper is the same with the Onyx just getting a bigger chassis and air spring. Also DVO folks will pick up the phone and answer questions about tuning if you call. I am trying to get a Mezzer for my Ripmo personally, but I may give up waiting and get an Onyx instead. e: Also check with your shop about servicing DVO vs Fox stuff. Maybe they do everything and that won't be a decision point but there are some shops that don't do in house service on some brands either due to lack of training or lack of tools and they send stuff out. Which makes maintenance more expensive. I think sending a shock to Fox for service is a couple hundred bucks plus shipping but if you can get it done locally it can be half that. funkymonks fucked around with this message at 02:41 on Feb 28, 2021 |

This thing popped up in the local group, gonna go take a look at it in the morning. Anything I should super look out for? Price seems ok-ish. ~2k under what a 2021 carbon would cost if you could actually find one, plus spares. About the cost of an alloy one.quote:Asking $2500 Is this dumb? It looks ok, plus it's purple. I've not been riding long enough for my fat rear end to notice differences in suspension as long as you can air it up enough to not bottom out all the time. My other bike is a roscoe 8 in ML so I think this'll fit too but be a little bigger and still ok.

Based on what I've been seeing in local classifieds, seems TGTBT. I haven't seen a single modern alloy-framed bike for less than that, let alone carbon. People are marking up bikes over MSRP even. I guess the only really major thing that would be a disaster would be frame cracks or something majorly wrong with the fork though?
