Brown glass will stop some UV but it should be mentioned welding gives off an astounding amount and properly rated glass barely looks transparent so if you do enough welds through bottles while still focusing on the weld your eye's probably going to itch later tonight still.

We had a subcontractor go out to do geotechnial borings. The target location that Miss Utility painted didn't have any space that was clear of utilities, so he used some utility guy equivalent of dousing rods, I think "rodding", to determine a safe area outside the Miss Utility zone.

The samples started bringing up little pieces of insulated wire, like the picture below would have made, except I think it was closer to a 6-inch diameter copper telephone line that they hit. The local communication company was not amused, although I think they didn't have much downtime for residents.

I do geotech drilling for my job and have seen people use "witching" rods before. I was drilling in a vacant lot and (my locates were good) saw a guy from the city pull up on the road, get out and walk perpendicular to the road with the rods, wherever they crossed, he'd lay down some green paint, walk 15-20 feet, watch where they crossed, green paint etc.... This looked like it was for OFFICIAL locates, not just some half rear end "we think its probably here but you might want to double check first".

In fairness though, he would have had access to the city drawings and whatnot showing where they actually are.

As for me, if I saw wires coming up like that I'd be stopping and being all like "what the fuckin poo poo is this"?

Your job sounds like an ideal candidate for "daylight before you drill".

Dowsing works like executive MBAs. Someone asking "why thing not done, my metrics are bad" or deciding to drill baby drill cause the sticks crossed can be great business process lubrication. In specific circumstances where fail fast works though otherwise maybe you should be taking your time.

The type of 𝒶𝓇𝓉𝒾𝓈𝓉 whose personality is as important to his brand as the art he produces; perhaps even more so. The type who sees themselves as society's enfant terrible, saying audacious things and being generally intolerable but excused because he's right, you know.

I am not all that impressed by him.

Also re. Jamie Hyneman I'm reminded of something a very well-known designer told me once. There are three facets to success in these sorts of creative/production/performance fields:

- be extremely good at what you do
- always be reliable and deliver on time
- be a good person that everyone likes

And while it's best to be all three, you can get away with any two.

If you're likable and reliable, you are the busy bee, and you might not blow anyone away with your work but you'll always have a place because you keep plugging away and getting things done.

If you're likable and very talented, you are the eccentric genius or virtuoso, and people will excuse you being kind of flaky because you're hard to stay mad at and when you do deliver it's exceptional work.

If you're very talented and always deliver on time, you can be an rear end in a top hat and people will put up with it because you can handle the mission-critical jobs, getting the work done competently the first time, right now. You will be unpleasant to work with but no one can argue the results. You are Jamie Hyneman.

If you only have one of the three you're going to be fired.

An old saying in my field is that consultants (attending physicians) in the UK's NHS need to be any two of affable, able and available.

Take 1 tablet by mouth daily.
They just ran a new line to my cable box a few weeks ago and a couple of guys were out marking where stuff is. They were running electricity through pipes and whatnot then using some sort of dowsing rod looking thing to detect and follow it. In the past all the little colored flags just appeared one day, kind of neat to see how they actually do it.

This also showed me that thanks to lovely landscape management and the powers of erosion that my gas line is soon going to be sticking out into my pond and I feel like that is maybe bad?

Going to be honest, I'd probably do something like this to gently caress with a newbie after having already cross checked everything on the drawings beforehand and knowing exactly where to mark.

Yeah, I'd definitely test your ability to hold your own bodyweight with one hand's grip for ~30 seconds (and then your ability to do a full muscle-up afterwards) before trying this on a real escalator.

In fact, this reminds me of when Mythbusters were testing the idea that you could use suction cups to climb a glass skyscraper (which they knew beforehand was true because people have done it in real life), and they ended up not being able to because nobody was strong enough/had enough endurance to do the actual climb even with suction cups that were strong enough for it.

I'm also very curious about the discoloration of the water when the yacht pulled up. Were the engines just powerful enough to be kicking sediment from the ocean floor into the water, or was there some kind of fuel or brown-water leak happening?

Apparently this yacht is a charter, so it's likely some multi-millionaire on board who rented it for the week instead of a mega-billionaire who owns it personally. (They took the price off of that yacht's page, likely because it's probably under repair now, but a very similar model rents for EUR€900,000 - 1,000,000/wk). Dude probably partied a little too hard, insisted that the crew join him in the good times, and we get this footage as a result.

It's sediment. You can tell that yacht has no business being there, and its draft probably puts it stupid close to the bottom.

One of the commentors opines that there was some type of control input failure which prevented the helmsman/captain from throttling down one engine, and it looks like they tried running the other engine in full reverse to slow or stop it (which apparently doesn't work).

Yeah, propellers are designed to work in one direction, they do work in reverse, but shittily, so if you have one engine full ahead and one full reverse you're not going anywhere, you're also going to have fuckall rudder authority (you won't be able to steer worth a poo poo)
