Yeah but squaddies are actually really strong, it's quick so long as the dungeon mechanics forced on you aren't too bad (since every attack defaults to you).

They'd be even stronger if I had ever gotten Level 5 Offensive tactics for my DPS minions. :argh:

Also I just chanced to get into a Castrum run. I had seen a video for the mechanics, but that was a while ago. Thankfully the RDM that organized the party I was in was doing callouts, so I mostly just followed them, and it was a fairly easy clear. I even managed to not die... granted I was playing as a PLD with Bloodsucker essence on, so all I had to do was not screw up back to back.

Also it's pretty funny doing this after 5.4's storyline. Mikoto going from "sorry, they're tempered, we don't know any way to break that" to "so, there's a way to cure tempering" in the time it took to go from one cutscene to the next."

That being said I’m pretty happy square learned a lesson from it and from FF14 and handed FF16 over to yoshi-p and his all star team. I’m sure FF16 will have some spin-off media and DLC, but I know Yoshi-p and his crew can and will deliver a feature and story complete game on release day.

It’s baffling how much that single guy and his team has restored my faith in the FF franchise after watching it decline hard over the past decade.

And I won't touch FF16 because it's still so shockingly rare that you can play as a woman in these games (and FF13 was a bucket of lukewarm piss). :(

The sad part there is that Final Fantasy's been low-key pretty good about playable women, going right back to the very first games. Hell, to THE first game if you give them credit for the White Mage.

So suddenly two games in a row likely having none of them is a HUGE downer.

White Mage was not a woman in the NES version of ff1. Every playable character was meant to be male (and are drawn as very traditionally masculine after you promote to advanced jobs).

Overall FF as a series has done a very good job of playable, capable, and important women. The White Mage just wasn't originally supposed to be one.

It's one reason I don't watch most MMO trailers. Even though you have the option to play as a woman, every cinematic I've seen for every MMO I've played has assumed you will be playing as a white guy with short brown hair.

Probably the fault of marketing teams saying they gotta target the (still mostly male) MMO player audience. It'd be interesting to see alternate renders of the FFXIV trailers where the signature character is replaced but everything else stays the same, though.

It is disappointing that in any game with a character creator, the marketing will always go with the most generic male option. Like, they could at least try to make an interesting looking dude, but no, it's always got to be the most boring choice possible. It's just based on sexism and marketing inertia, I would be incredibly surprised if putting a female character or a non-generic white male in some of marketing material had any kind of measurable negative effect. Outside of the usual idiots screaming on the internet, but those people are never going to shut up.

I do kind of understand it in FF14's case, they've already got the lady & LGBT MMO gamer demographics locked down so it makes sense they want to advertise outside that to the guys who need to be lured in with cool man with sword

This is true. FFXIV is the queerest and most gender diverse MMO I've ever played. It's awesome.

I am on Faerie though so maybe I have some perception bias due to that.

Right across from my apartment on Famfrit is a large plot owned by a gay FC.

Representation was something I noticed early on. If I told you an MMO had 3 major city-states, how many would you expect to have women as heads of state? Probably zero if it's an older game, 1 if more modern. 3 out of 3 is basically unheard of.

Granted that one of them has questionable real authority, but it's a good point. FFXIV isn't immune from gender tropes but it does a lot better in that regard than basically any mmo I've played, and I've played a lot of loving mmos.

Tbf to cleretic, shes usually arguing that she already knows exactly what the plot is and how it fails all her markers of a good story already.

This is a much more cognizant argument than usual.

But seemingly getting EchoVision far enough where the equivalent is getting Echo flashbacks about Asahi or something while you’re doing the Titan feast quest lines; just seems kinda early to me for her to be getting this involved with this little info and context

Between Kan-e-Senna being a weird ageless teen and Merlwyb being a cool pirate with a gun, them being women isn't really the most notable thing going on. Nanamo is the only person where any attention is really paid to it, because she's called the "Sultana".

its kinda funny saying 'generic white male' when this is a game made in japan lol. the fact is guys like generic trailer man appeal to a lot of women in japan, too. like as a random example if you look at popularity polls for stuff like persona, the most popular character with women is the generic player self-insert. and if you just look at pixiv and stuff theres a fair amount of fanart of, generic trailer man, making out with emet-selch or w/e.

ofc i'd definitely agree that, say, they should switch around some, or bring back the party members from the earlier trailers, but its kinda hard to immediately get across 'this is the stand-in for you, the player' without the ten years of generic highlander guy being the stand in already. and switching midstream would just lead to confusion. it's not an ideal situation but i dont think its born solely from regressive politics or only trying to appeal to Straight Men or whatever.

If they did have an interest in changing it, 7.0 starting off a brand new story arc would be a good opportunity to do so.

They won't do it because it's an MMO and it would screw with player communities. But having the 6.0 climax require the WoL to sacrifice themselves Nier-style (here's a free fantasia and name reset because old you is loving dead, enjoy 6.x!) would be a heck of a thing.
