It's a big solar sail for energy generation is my bet

I mean it's actually just a giant aesthetically pleasing sail for fashion alone but that's not what the terrans tell people

The tram line running on the inside is nice too.

Also I assume it is a solar panel, but I'm curious how the game handles it, whether it has any functional use, because it's gonna be weird if that just catches a giant amount of gunfire all the time and does nothing. Maybe it's modeled as a module? Module could conceivably allow it to track the sun too.

I suppose they can make animated ship sections anyway it's just none of them use it other than a couple of fighters.

You see the same class of vessel without any sail deployed so I'm gonna guess it's either something you install or can toggle on and off.

Anyway shame that I'm too broke to get X4 nevermind the expansion, maybe I'll play some X3 more though.
Perhaps keep an eye on it via IsThereAnyDeal. The collector's edition (base game plus both expansions) has frequently gone on sale somewhere or another, even last year around the time that Split Vendetta came out.

There's a ship in X:Rebirth that also has an axial cannon and it looks badass there as well. They even fixed the pilot AI to use it eventually. :v:

drat that looks good. I'm excited to see how things went after the jump gate shutdown. I imagine the Terrans thought, "Fuckin' sweet! No more annoying Commonwealth drama." They have accelerator gates connecting their entire territory so they probably were barely even bothered.

Though if I'm not mistaken there appeared to be a Terran built/modified Jump Gate.

That might be a different ship, in X3 the terrans had the Toyko, which was their carrier, and the... other ship that was their large transport and looked almost identical that I forget the name of. And that's the general design of the ship in question. The big patreon logo.

Also did they rebuild the torus? I guess the station at the end is part of it (I never actually got to see in in X3) but it looks broken on one end, so I thought it was literally just a part of it free floating.

Nah it's def the same boat, same launchbay design, same hollow ring command deck, and same escorts as the earlier shot. The ship you're thinking of, while yeah very similar to the Tokyo, didn't have launchbays of any type.

Side note, really digging that the Terrans seem to have downscaled the Kyoto as their new... I guess those are M2s?

Which is how the Argon dopes destroyed it in the first place, wasn't it? They mass-separated all of the sections, which individually sealed off and floated away.

X4 codex confirms it was just a separation of the section connectors so it wouldn't be that hard to rebuild those and reconnect the main parts.

She actually did blow it the gently caress up, huge explosion

That said if it the torus worked like a ring world it would make sense for it to have an emergency separation protocol, cuz it was going to catastrophically rip apart anyway if it was severed.

To prevent it from tearing itself apart and all falling on earth, ending all life in a giant fiery catastrophe.

As it stands it only ended a Lot of life in a giant fiery catastrophe, because of this decoupling protocol. Only the sections that were destroyed and the sections immediately around those ended up being caught in a decaying orbit, all the other sections were able to be jettisoned into stable orbits.

Yeah TC and AP had this weird thing where the Terrans were the designated villains but, uh... well that doesn't actually hold up to any scrutiny. You don't react to an attempt to sabotage your murder AI research with the mass murder of millions and massive damage to a planet's biosphere.

Actual game question and not DEEP LORE, does X4 have any plots to speak of? I'm probably gonna hold off on installing until the new patch since so much is changing, but I noticed I never see anyone discussing plots of any type. Gonna be sad if there's no PHQ or something to chase.

You actually get a PHQ pretty early and cheaply via a short-ish plot. Then there's another that ultimately points you to the Split and Paranid plots. Those plots are driven by the shadiest motherfucker I've ever seen in a game. I'm not even sure he's deliberately written to be suspect, but I'd jettison his rear end immediately.

The missions aren't the most thrilling storytelling in the medium, but they work just fine.

The 'plots' are based around changing the existing dynamics of the universe. They do have a story but it's nothing amazing. They are huge resource sinks though so it does keep you going with a big goal throughout the game. It is possible that the Terrans storyline is more in-depth but we won't know for 2 weeks.

I do appreciate the game just flat out saying that a good reason for instigating sectarian conflict is selling arms to both sides. It's explicitly spelled out in the mission text if I remember correctly. I felt really seen when I read it, because that was exactly my criterium for deciding. Don't want an NPC faction to get too powerful and become difficult to oppose, after all.

Also, no peace. Peace is bad for profits.
