The entire premise is flawed, you can see it from the moment it includes Pink Flamingoes. It's trying to create an impression that to go deeper into horror is to watch progressively more "extreme" stuff, which is not at all how it's done. There's no room in this framework for films like Possession or Xtro, let alone Hitchcock-style thrillers and slow build psychological horror. It is a boor's view of the genre.

I think the purpose of it is to be a "disturbing movies" chart rather than an "essential horror" chart. Films like Pink Flamingos, Come and See, Men Behind the Sun, Salo, Irreversible, etc. are often included on these lists despite not being horror.

It's like it's fixated on the definition of "horror" per the horror/terror dichotomy, so like images or scenes that are horrifying to view rather than a mounting sense of dread

I only know one of the ones on the lower levels and I haven't seen it but I know that it's torture porn. I mean like actual torture porn as in straight up porn with torture in it.

And, I mean, I'm not here to kink shame, but I'm not sure it belongs on any kind of list with regular horror movies because those are very different things.

My dad had Banned From Television. I had no idea what it was other than the warnings on the VHS box scared me when I found it back when I was 7 or so.

Then I eventually saw someone discuss it in a web forum thread about the most bothersome movies they ever saw. Apparently a woman gets killed by a train in it.

I have no idea why the hell my dad had that.

Blood Vessel is a recent Nazi Vampire flick that takes place on a German ship that's much less gimmicky than the premise implies that I enjoyed enough. Nothing groundbreaking, but the characters and creature designs were fun. It's on Shudder.

It seems wrong to put so much discussion behind Communion and not link it's scarring abomination of a cover-

My mom was an alien freak and she also had a wild sense of humor. When I was ~8 I'd return from school to find this loving grey smiling at me when I opened the door, multiple times.

I'd plead with her to stop, but she found it too funny and now thirty years later I can't look at a grey without feeling wrong.

A horror film hasn't sincerely scared me in years, but every time I see one of these little smiling fuckers my pulse quickens and I become sentimental.

I don't really get into alien abduction stuff. "High weirdness" feels like an excuse to just have a bunch of nonsense happen, and then the movie ends with someone disappearing and a light receding into the sky, or some similar predictable thing.

Hollismason posted:

I could never get into the poliziottesch films. I think i've only watched one Live Like a Cop , Die like a Man or something like that
That's kind of a weird example of the genre because of the whole relationship between the cops, who are roommates, and hang around in their underwear together, and are definitely not gay. I don't even know if the comedy is intentional or not. (The same director did Raiders of Atlantis, which is one of the weirdest Pastapocalypse films I've ever seen. It tried to marry the Bond-style international adventure film with the Mad Max ripoff subgenre.)

Caliber 9, Street Law, and The Heroin Busters are my recommendations. The last one has a Goblin soundtrack so this post is relevant to the thread!

Those are all solid recs. I've got a Fernando Di Leo blu ray set that has Caliber 9 and 3 others films in it which are also really good (The Italian Connection, The Boss, and Rulers of the City).

It's been screened before an audience but the full uncut , unedited , version of the film has never been released on media. The version that was released on Shudder was as close to the original as your going to get. If I am remembering correctly here is the difference for the ending It ends with nun masterbating with the femur of the guy who was burned at the stake

I remember hitting an emotional rock bottom one October evening and turning on The Devils for the first time in a frozen closet.

The rawboned zeal, the Oliver Reed factor, the choices that this film makes hit me like a ACME anvil. My pain and lovely sorrows were washed away and I felt 200lbs lighter by the end of this whale of a movie.

It's truly a blessed film.

I saw the uncut version of The Devils for the first time a year or so ago, and for most of the film I was like "I don't get what the fuss was about, there's nothing all that controversial or blasphemous in this!" and then I got to the rape of Christ scene and :eyepop:

It's still a stellar film without those scenes though, so don't sleep on it holding out for an uncut release that probably won't happen anytime soon. I believe it was just added to Shudder.

A year or so ago, when my av was just Philippe from Achewood, I had been talking in another thread about how greys were my "thing", like, some people are afraid of clowns, some of snakes, some of spiders, etc, I have those bastards. The next day, I posted, and when I looked at my post, someone had pasted the Communion Grey over top of my av and I had about five seconds of "WHAT THE gently caress"

This is gonna sound like me going "Im not owned, im not owned", but it was honestly a delightful scare and I still applaud whoever did it.

The actual uncut version has never been released afaik. There is just a heavily edited version and a mostly unedited recent version that was released which is almost uncut. The "uncut" version that was released on Shudder last year was pretty close to being the full version. Basically there's 3 versions of The Devils.

Edited Version
Mosly unedited Europeans Version ( this was on Shudder) , what most people see
Still unreleased but screened for a audience version that has only been screened

Basically if the version you see doesn't end with the nun using the femur to get off with its the mostly unedited version.

Here's a story on it

Basically there's two scenes that were cut from the 1971 film that have never been released on home media , only screened.
