There's another episode from that era where Homer goes to a self help seminar ran by a guy who lives it up like the wealthy by penny pinching on the details, taking lesser or damaged versions of luxury goods. One of the examples he gives is with a picture of himself surrounded by beautiful women who he explains "are actually dudes" or something like that.

I remember thinking that was grossly unpleasant when it first aired, and I was an absolutely moronic 14yo who used homophobic slurs all the time

How about when Otto was taking his drivers test and he asked Patty (or was it Selma) if she used to be a man. “It’s okay, I’m open minded” Still transphobic (if mostly in how she took offense at it/how negatively it's presented), but I feel like somehow they at least knew how to make it layered and subtle and sympathetic back in the early days Data Graham fucked around with this message at 13:09 on Mar 2, 2021 |

That's usually one of my first thoughts upon waking up every day. lol. So much knowledge, invention, innovation and works of art that could've been. edit: simpsons is bad, didn't have to be.

Really, the show should end on Bart getting an 'A-' in class, thus completing his series-long arc to find a way to balance his rebellious attitude with being functional and happy in this world.

I can finally contribute to this thread after encountering a 2020 episode in the wild... It was Treehouse of Horror XXXI and it basically played out like an extended series of outtakes deemed not funny and lacked the Zazz! Zing! Zork! required to get it over the line. The segments: Toy Gory Unnecessary rehash of the groundbreaking Homer3 episode from 25 years earlier but with an incredibly weak parody of Toy Story slapped over the top of it. Really felt like every scene and every joke was an alternate one of the better ones they meant to use had been lost. I vaguely remember maybe an ok gag in there somewhere but I can't remember what it was at all. 3D Bart is giving his old toys away to charity and remembers torturing all of them to a Randy Newman parody song montage. As a reward for this, 3D marge gives him a new Radioactive Man toy who later finds out the horrors the toys put up with from a Krusty doll. He is put in a microwave and explodes after vowing revenge to no other toys, though the other toys get together and kill 3D Bart, replacing his insides with toy parts and candy and a pull-string. Nothing funny comes of it. The whole segment felt like a steadily deflating air mattress. Into the Homerverse Unnecessary rehash of the very enjoyable Send In The Clones episode from season 14, but this time with worse jokes and more annoying versions of Homer. (From Wiki) Marge calls Homer to tell him to bring home the Halloween candy, but he ate it all. Homer searches the Nuclear Power Plant for candy and finds what he thinks is a vending machine. When he tries to put a quarter in it, it explodes. After waking up, Homer realizes that versions of him from the Multiverse have appeared. The Homers become friends and spend time together around Springfield. Lisa realizes that the explosion opened a hole in the space-time continuum and tells Homer to recreate the explosion to fix it. They head to the Nuclear Power Plant to do so, but Mr. Burns stops them. Versions of Burns and Smithers from other dimensions fight the Homers and win. When Burns learns from a Noir version of Smithers that the Burns of his world is his assistant, he gives in and sends the alternate Homers, Burns and Smithers back to their own dimensions. As a side-effect, Homer begins shifting into the forms of his counterparts. This segment had potential story-wise for a strong ending and many missed opportunities for jokes, but the rug is pulled right out at the last second. Kinda like getting an unfinished bad handjob. Be Nine, Rewind Is partly a rehash of the phenomenal Time And Punishment mixed with Groundhog Day. This was the strongest segment of the three but still suffered badly from missed opportunities, rushed pacing, trying to fit too many gags in while not refining the gags enough, and another fairly weak ending. Lisa turns 9 and gets killed by Gil crashing his car into the house at her party, she immediately wakes back up in her room a few minutes earlier and avoids Gil but is killed again. For some reason, Nelson is the only one who knows what's going on. They keep dying in slightly funny ways that don't make much sense until they work out what's going on and try to fix it, which ends up being the same sort of anti-climax that the other episodes offered. This segment was the best paced and had better jokes, and helped you forget about the first two and ultimately you should have forgotten about this once American Dad is on afterward which is far better written at all times.

On the Facebook announcement for this, there were of course several "still better than 90% of everything else on TV!" comments. It makes me want to scream. I remember telling that to myself in like 2002. But: 1. I was a dumb high schooler 2. One could still be holding out hope at that time that the show could get good again without seeming completely insane 3. "prestige TV" wasn't a thing yet and TV was still mostly littered with reality TV and 90's holdover sitcoms. But now? NOW? How much of a rock must you be living under, and/or how much would you have to be deluding yourself to actually think this?
