Braindead is an amazing movie. Early Peter Jackson poo poo is weird, to the point of insanity, and it makes it even more ridiculous that a major studio said to him "Yes, Peter, you can take this two hundred million dollars into the New Zealand hinterlands and film back-to-back-to-back three films making up one of the most beloved book series' ever".

Drove into water with a hot diff and sucked water into the vent maybe

That's more than just one trip through the water with a broken vent. I'd wager a guess that it spent the weekend stuck in a mudhole before finally getting dragged out.

Could have been as simple as a lovely axle seal that weeps a little oil normally plus a water crossing that took longer than expected. I certainly don't know of anyone with a Dana 30 with lovely weeping axle seals... (You have to pull the wheels, brakes, unit bearings, shafts, cover, and carrier and ring gear to replace 12 dollars in seals on those. It's very very easy to justify just putting more gear lube in every 4 or 5 months to yourself when it's that much of a pain in the rear end.)

I was actually wondering if it was latex based paint when he pulled the cover off. What does a differential feel like when it goes all frothy?

I guess it's not a car, but my bike's rear derailleur made a noise last night: I might not be an expert but I'm pretty sure this isn't the direction the the cage is supposed to point: The two sides of the cage are supposed to be parallel: Well, you win some, and you lose some. At least bike parts are easy to come by these days, right?
