She doesn't follow politics as much as I do (and certainly doesn't see all the dirt that the Internet digs up) so I'm guessing she's simply not up to date since the leadership election. Borrovan posted:Wait why doesn't the light coming off the water do the same thing The pic is wrong. The light from the ship isn't bending that much, we are talking about nanometer levels here. The denser/lighter air bends the blue part of the light from the ship and surrounding water changing it so that it has the same color as the sky that meets the water from your position. Blue light has a wavelength of 450 nanometers, the air is 'bending' it by a few namometers just. The light from the ship is bending too by this amount. Edit: The Flat Earthers are going to love this pic. happyhippy fucked around with this message at 15:21 on Mar 5, 2021 |

Easiest way to think of it is there's a mirror on the ocean that's reflecting the sky - your brain therefore sees sky "under" the ship and is convinced it's flying and disregards all other cues telling it otherwise. Cover the ship up and the "seam" between the sky and the reflection is much more obvious, cover up the reflection under the ship and the fact that you're missing the bits of the ship beneath the waterline becomes obvious.

Gorn Myson posted:Awesome, another debate about the political alignment and loyalties of Glenn Greenwald, I haven't seen enough of these online lately. Glenn Greenwald is a man who is absolutely not worth the amount of words written about him. He was always a libertarian which is pretty bad even if it makes him better than neoliberals on certain areas like civil liberties & global forever war, & like many libertarians he's gotten a bit too close to the sun & the glue has melted & now he is if not a fascist then still very comfortable around fascists. That said, claiming he's a Strasserite is reductionist drivel, as is the case 99% of the time someone labels someone a Strasserite as if it as a term as any meaning whatsoever. Darth Walrus posted:You could click through and read the article. It contains gems like this: I mean, the Attlee government wasn't exactly opening up the borders. (Well, it kind of did to Commonwealth citizens as an unintended consequence of the British Nationality Act 1948 but only 3,000 per year were coming in 1953 so I'm not counting it) There's always been an element of the socialist movement, often closest to trade unions, which regards immigration purely as driving down wages & a negative unfortunately, hardly restricted to just NazBols or Strasserites.

happyhippy posted:The pic is wrong. I think that their entire explanation is in fact wrong because like I say you can see - particularly at the right edge of the photo - the "seam", which suggests that it's actually just a conventional mirage over the ocean reflecting the sky. The only way to be sure would be with a theodolite or something I suppose to work out where the actual horizon is.

If anything I can see a lot more companies (particularly estate agents and the like) taking it up after seeing what the consequences are, i.e. basically none.

The EHRC is very proactive about the most serious kind of racism, anti-English racism, so you'd need to bait them into a test case by having a hotel that doesn't allow the top 25 English last names (which includes Johnson).
