Hello, dear
my childhood best friend was a cantonese immigrant

made friends because my P1 teacher took me to be the most accommodating boy (would in later life be identified as "gay") and sat him beside me

one of the most vivid childhood memories i have is when we were play fighting near an electrical transformer that was fenced off by what looked like a boxing ring but with metal wires instad of ropes (and concrete pillars instead of... turnstiles?) and a grown man came along and goaded me on to give him a good kicking, calling him "wee chinky china man"

i must have been 5 years old and he 6 but i knew something was awfully wrong and so did he

we just went back to my garden and played with star wars figures in the sand pit

never mentioned it again, but i do wonder if he remembers it too

Hello, dear
i should say the electrical transformer was encaged in a huge spikey fenced enclosure, at the centre of the aforementioned fenced off area

it hummed like maybe 200 bees

i'll maybe go there and take pictures for yous

Stephen Bush can be quite perceptive but he has a couple of massive blind spots. One is anti-semitism in Labour, where he's completely internalised the concept of the Corbynite anti-semitic Left and reflexively believes any and all allegations made, no matter how ludicrous and tangential. The second is that he's firmly committed to the concept of Starmer being a good and effective leader and is forever banging on about how Starmers personal ratings are better than other Labour leaders at this point in their leadership, 'cos that's the single solitary metric he can find that shows any sort of positive.

Actually, now I've typed all that, I'm not sure that he really is very perceptive at all.

Connections (series one) is my all-time favourite documentary series. It's just so good. He's a great presenter and in series one at least they take the time to lay stuff out well. Series one was produced by the BBC and had a runtime of 50 mins per episode, 2 and 3 sadly were produced by TLC (America, owned by Discovery) and had a runtime of 22 mins... and it just wasn't long enough for that format - everything was rushed. Was still good like, because as I said, he's a great presenter... but the entire point of that series and why it was different was that it laid out how two seemingly unconnected technological innovations or scientific discoveries etc. (often hundreds or thousands of years apart) indirectly led from one to the other, and actually going into detail about it. With a 22 min runtime it had a bit of a "and then draw the rest of the owl" effect and it just didn't feel fleshed out enough.

Still, definitely watch series one.

I didn't really have much exposure to people who weren't generically white Irish until my late teens and I still ended up relatively normal. Probably took a little too long to realise that the "ironic" racist posting style of the early 00s was just racism tho :smith:

I think a lot of it is performative. This is the thing so many people desperately want to be "smart" and think that being sensible tm is an easy route to that. It is the sort of thinking that a lot of people go in for even if they can't quite explain it, and then they will justify it because feeling otherwise is making them feel bad about stuff.

I bet the scene at 47:30 where he says "and fall down" and lowers the punch card revealing the World Trade Center would set off the qananas something special if they knew it existed and weren't obsessively stalking Hillary Clinton's twitter for magic letters.

Kinda want to decode that card now though, but I can make a big dipper/plough/ursa major and a Star of David out of it with no effort at all, so I think I know what the Q result would be.

Almost all Jews living in England in 1650 were breaking the law.
Almost all gay men living in Britain in the 1950s were breaking the law.

Connections is honestly my favourite documentary series of all time, and is right up there for me in terms of the greatest show ever made - it's what I always turn to when I'm feeling a bit low, basically comfort food for the brain. It's a direct reply to the two big prestige documentaries David Attenbrough commissioned to show off colour television when he was controller of BBC2 (he also televised snooker because it was cheap and relied on colour) - Civilisation and The Ascent of Man, which were grandiose histories of art and science respectively. Both are excellent documentaries in their own right (although the former in particular suffers from a massively eurocentric view of the world which is a bit clanging to modern ears).

James Burke, who presented Tomorrows World and had fronted the BBC coverage of the moon landings, disliked both shows for their Great Man view of progress - he was of the view that progress was a matter of collaboration and the right person happening to be in the right place at the right time, not a singular genius changing the world, so he successfully lobbied to make a series based on this idea, where he does stuff like trace the invention of the pike square, credit cards and canned food to the moon landings (which is what gives you that amazing shot, gently caress the one-take in Goodfellas, *that's* ballsy).

Like I say it's well worth watching them all because it's (for me) the absolute acme of what a documentary should be - someone who is enthusiastic and knowledgeable telling you things that he thinks are important with passion and humour, with absolutely amazing illustrations of it. I don't understand why documentary makers still insist on the bullshit "I'm on a journey..." format where the presenter is basically fronting the most elaborate and expensive reaction video of all time. I still vividly remember the moment I crack-pinged on that modern format, it was Brian Cox standing at the top of Mauna Kea next to the big observatories talking about... some star bullshit, I can't even remember because instead of being say in the observatory showing us the output from it, or just pointing at the sky, *he was looking at a star chart on an iPad and talking about how it made him feel* in his poo poo britpop Iraq-war enabling voice.
