Might also be helpful to give some to Redditors who will then make posts which get 90% "you're a stupid shill" in reply but also 10% "tell me more" replies. That 10% will later power the feedback loop and eventually you may have a thread where everyone is talking about how it'll go to the moon.

It’s why I ask, because there are like so many coins that were .001-.1 cent just recently that have shot up to like 10 cents this year. If you get on the ground floor or some memey name and have hundreds of thousands of it while its worth has a decimal and then 3+ zeros before any other numbers in it and then it ... no longer has zeros: that’s some easy money for like, nothing. In volume that is.

I’m guessing the hardest part now is just finding a meme-winning name.

I mean, there's a bit of the same cognitive error that caused redditors to think that they should buy thousands of dollars of stocks priced at $0.01, thinking that if the stock ever goes to $0.02 you will have doubled your money.

You still have to have someone agree to buy the coins once they've moved from 0.001 cents to 0.1 cent. The quantity of trades among these types of coins is tremendously small, so if you try to offload ten million of your new coin you'll likely drive the price down to nothing. If you really manage to hit the meme wave at exactly the right second, you could make some money. But honestly, with the amount of effort that will have to put into hyping your coin, it is unlikely to be worth it.

True. I was just looking at pricing and not like, ability to sell it.

If you zoom out enough on most of these loving alt coins they all say like sub .001 price over a year ago.

It's too easy losing money on crypto because Reddit threads and Telegram groups, even those that aren't trying to grift you, represent such a low potential of trade volume.

You can see a hundred posts about how people are buying X due to Y and see a coinciding uptick in price, but that's the peak. Everyone who is exposed to the "buy now!" messaging has bought.

On the other hand you have bull runs where pretty much any coin will double, triple, or more in just a month. Whether that increase will offset what you lost buying at a previous peak is another issue.

Bitcoin's currently sitting at $47,610.37, down over $10k from the all-time high on February 21st. I guess the word about Biden cutting off the next stimulus check at $80k has caused some cash-tightness among the bitcoin demographic.

So they recently implemented a hard cap on HNTs, but if anyone wants to actually use this network they have to buy HNTs to transfer data and then the HNTs get removed forever? So if anyone actually does what the network is trying to realize instead of hoarding pogs, then number go up I guess??

Anti-virus mogul John McAfee charged with fraud over crypto promotion

McAfee indicted in federal court over schemes that promoted cryptocurrency offerings on social media

John McAfee, the antivirus software pioneer whose former company still bears his name, has been indicted on fraud and money laundering conspiracy charges stemming from two cryptocurrency schemes, the US Department of Justice said on Friday.

Authorities accused McAfee and his bodyguard, Jimmy Gale Watson Jr, of exploiting McAfee’s large Twitter following to artificially inflate prices of “altcoins” through a pump-and-dump scheme, and concealing payments McAfee received from startup businesses to promote initial coin offerings.

McAfee and his accomplices allegedly reaped more than $13m from the schemes, according to the US Department of Justice. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission filed related civil charges concerning the alleged pump-and-dump scheme.

Lawyers for McAfee and Watson could not immediately be identified.

McAfee is being detained in Spain following his arrest there on tax evasion charges, which was announced in October, the justice department said. Watson was arrested on Thursday night, the department added.

Both also face civil charges by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, which in October accused McAfee of concealing more than $23.1m he made from boosting seven cryptocurrency offerings on Twitter.

McAfee became the subject of a media frenzy in 2012 when he fled his home in Belize after police sought him for questioning about the death of a neighbor. They ultimately said he was not a suspect.

In the cryptocurrency cases, authorities said McAfee touted assets including Verge, Reddcoin and Dogecoin as part of a “Coin of the Day” or “Coin of the Week” tweet from around December 2017 through February 2018.

Authorities said McAfee held himself up as an expert on cybersecurity and cryptocurrency through his tweets, speeches and his role as a CEO of a publicly traded cryptocurrency company.

They also accused him of telling followers he had no stake in the coins, even as he touted how they “will change the world”.

HAIL TO THE VICTORS!
Central Florida has it's own bitcoin brain genius criminal. A Florida county tax collector (an elected position that handles property taxes, car registration, and driver's licenses) who has already been charged with various other crimes had an idea... a blockchain idea!
https://www.orlandosentinel.com/new...qmhe-story.html

quote:

Former Seminole Tax Collector Joel Greenberg billed his own office $65,860 last year to buy computer servers for a private company he started to capitalize on blockchain technology, records show.

Greenberg and his company, Government Blockchain Systems LLC, eventually returned the money to the public office through a series of checks, though it’s unclear what prompted the refunds.

In an e-mail on Feb. 11, Greenberg wrote to the Tax Collector’s Office accounting supervisor, “40,860 will arrive tomorrow via check to make up the balance of 65,860 minus 25,000 already refunded.” That is the same month the office brought in Brian Bieber, a white collar criminal defense attorney with GrayRobinson, to represent the office in a federal investigation.
Greenberg, 35, was indicted in June on multiple federal charges of stalking a political opponent and using his office to steal old driver’s licenses as well as create fake identifications. He resigned from office the next day.

The transactions between Greenberg’s company and the public office will be part of an in-depth forensic audit Seminole County Government ordered this week to look for evidence of fraud as well as investigate questionable purchases and hiring decisions by Greenberg.

“We have to protect the taxpayers and the taxpayers’ money,” said Commission Chairman Jay Zembower regarding the audit, which will cost $25,000 and be performed by MSL CPAs & Advisors of Orlando beginning early next month.

Records show the now-dissolved Government Blockchain Systems, which was started by Greenberg in July 2019, billed the Tax Collector’s office $65,860 on Sept. 9, 2019 for 20 servers. The next day the public office run by Greenberg cut a check for that amount to Greenberg’s private company.

Of course sex with minors was involved:

He also tried to ransom his own country government for $500k in bitcoin!

https://twitter.com/robertjdenault/status/1367628247786262528

He faces 14 federal charges, including stalking, identity theft and sex trafficking of a minor.

Plus he violated his bond conditions the other day trying to stalk his wife across the state in the middle of the night.

The purpose of TOR being usable by the public is that a communications network only used by the CIA is useless. If you catch someone using it you know they're with the CIA and can initiate rubber hose decryption. On the other hand someone using TOR could be a CIA operative, but they could also be a drug dealer, child pornographer, carder, Richard Stallman, so while you can still deploy rubber hose decryption they have plausible deniability. Bitcoin is the same way: there are enough useful idiots all-in on number go up to provide plausible deniability for the drug dealers, hackers, carders, and Stallman's of the world who actually use it. That is not the case with Monero. It's designed from the ground-up as a criminal currency and there are nowhere near enough useful idiots using it to provide cover for it's illegal uses.
