This is why the GICs need to be abolished, they do not exist to help us, sending more money their way will not help.

Came to post this, any idea that the official system is "better" than online pharmacists is a fake one.

GICs only seeing two patients a year is a feature, not a bug. Either force people to go private (where they'll be paying the same people anyway) or make their lives miserable because if they didn't want to be miserable, they'd have chosen to be rich.

Connections is honestly my favourite documentary series of all time, and is right up there for me in terms of the greatest show ever made - it's what I always turn to when I'm feeling a bit low, basically comfort food for the brain. It's a direct reply to the two big prestige documentaries David Attenbrough commissioned to show off colour television when he was controller of BBC2 (he also televised snooker because it was cheap and relied on colour) - Civilisation and The Ascent of Man, which were grandiose histories of art and science respectively. Both are excellent documentaries in their own right (although the former in particular suffers from a massively eurocentric view of the world which is a bit clanging to modern ears).

Thread favourite Ways of Seeing was also made as a rebuke to Civilisation. That series must really have pissed some people off.

I read the thread on that tweet and they're saying the way the data is put is a little misleading.

The clinic didn't see only two patients in 2020, it only saw two patients that'd signed up since December 2019. Presumably the rest of the patients they saw were from the extremely long waiting list of people who'd signed up before then.

so those two people jumped the line then since if that was the case then why do they still have people from before December 2019 waiting?

There is a woods near us where every tree has a bag of poo poo tied to it. If my dog shits in the woods and I don't have a bag to carry it back to a bin I'm just going to get a stick and flick it under a bush.

I live at the end of a terrace near a park and people constantly use our bin to drop their dog poo poo into after leaving the park, even though they walk last a proper dog poo poo bin to get to ours.

It seems like a rather large stretch of a reading, personally. Unless, as suggested, the clinic is deliberately trying to make it look like it isn't seeing any patients which would be bizzare.

The problem with dog poo bags is that it seems reasonable to cache a full one for the return journey so you don't have to carry it, but then people either forget or are confronted with a dozen identical little black bags when they return. It's one thing to take your own dog's poo home but accidentally taking someone else's dog's poo home is deeply revolting.
IMO the bags should come in a selection of fluorescent colours to encourage positive identification.

Doesn't help when someone in the neighbourhood has dementia and their dog craps on the verge at exactly the same location every day, so they stick it in a little white bag and poke it into someone's garden hedge to pick up on the way back. Alongside their bag from yesterday and the one from the day before. The hedge owner used to flick the whole cache back onto the verge at the end of the month and the council mowers would chop them up.

In my case it took two referrals from two different GP practices to even get the Leeds GIDS clinic to recognise that I had been referred and even then only just received confirmation that it has been accepted.

God, out of everyone I know, only one person has go to the hormones stage at the Leeds GIDS clinic. All the rest are still waiting for the first appointment, with everyone experiencing the same poo poo you have. iirc it's still at over 2000 people waiting for that fist appointment from like, October 2017. It just makes so, so angry at how gender transitioning is handled in the UK.

Honestly, that also goes for the rest of the specialised NHS units in Leeds. It took me two years from first referral to the Mount for ADHD to starting medication titration this past December; even they went through the whole "oh we're sorry we don't have a record of your referral", "whoops we forgot to put you on the list properly" etc. Just poo poo all a round.

The question is how many patients have been accepted AND processed since December 2019, so they're specifically asking for patients since December 2019 who fit both categories. That there's just two of them is loving ridiculous, but that doesn't mean they assessed a total of two patients over that time.

The reason they're give a low figure that makes them look bad is because FOIA requests have to give the exact information you requested - and that's what this is.

They didn't answer how many people had been processed though

Algol Star
Sep 6, 2010

With freedom of information requests they are strictly required to answer the exact question that is asked. The question asked how many were referred and processed in the date range given. They answered that exact question as they are required to do. They weren't asked how many appointments were completed, how many individual patients were seen, how many new patient appointments took place. It's extremely misleading to present that as 'they saw 2 patients in a whole year'.
It's also not possible to tell whether the waiting list is growing or shrinking from the figures given as they weren't asked how many new referrals were seen.

This:

Rumda posted:

is completely ridiculous when someone has tried to give an honest (and correct) explanation of the figures and you don't need to disagree that the level of service provided is shocking to point this out.

OwlFancier
Aug 22, 2013

The whole thing seems predicated on the idea that they couldn't possibly only have seen two people so there must be some other explanation, which uh, why?

They weren't asked that. FOIAs are tricky, the organisation under scrutiny is required to submit the information requested, no more no less.

It's annoying when a question is interpreted overly literally but it's better than an organisation having the option to submit answers that just make them look good.

They have to answer the exact question except when they don't?

Also I think that parsing that question as "only people who have been both accepted and assessed since that time" is inherently subjective, it could just as well be read as "how people people have been accepted and how many people have been processed?" so arguing that they have to interpret it that way is silly.
