Almost no match type or rule or gimmick or common story is inherently bad. It's bad implementations. I'm sure there's a way to make a Punjab Prison Match good.

Really it's just the blood feuds where a cage match is booked terribly that sucks. Like Mox and Rollins wanted to gently caress each other up, then they got into a cage match and cared more about escaping and winning than loving each other up.

Tbh, that's why I'm not really a fan of the Bret/Owen cage match. They spent too much time trying to escape the cage when you would have thought Bret would be more interested in having a definitive wrestling contest after losing at Wrestlemania. Owen, sure, he wants to get the title off of Bret by any means necessary, but they probably could've done more to show his conflict between that and wanting to mess Bret up physically. All the stuff about keeping the divided family at bay wasn't used until after the match had already finished. It was probably a very good match for WWF at the time, but it did nothing for me when I watched it not long ago.

A good cage match: Eddie vs Rey during that awful custody of Dominic angle. (Context: Rey had pinned Eddie in several one-on-one matches over the past few months.) Eddie beats the piss out of Rey, and is about to walk out the cage in Sammartino fashion; he pauses, reconsiders, then walks back in to frog splash and pin Rey, to a monstrous pop.
