...perfect spiral, scientists are still figuring it out...

Z the IVth posted:

This premise fails on a couple of grounds

1. Time - 3D printers aren't simple to operate and take some (a lot of) finessing if you want them to perform well. It's the old dichotomy between time and money. I thought about buying a 3D printer but then I realised I'd just spend all of my very limited spare time trying to print poo poo instead of painting/playing. Great if you're a college student with a lot of time and no money, less so when it's the reverse.

2. Quality - 3D prints are great from certain angles only unless you get the finessing just right. I've bought enough 3D prints to realise this and something will look beautiful from the front/top but be a semi-blobby mess from the back. Also there will be layer lines and artefacts. Your stuff will be better than most garage kits and equal to 2nd tier manufacturers like Mantic and Privateer Press but forget about them looking as good as GW or Infinity. I don't think you can get manufacture level quality from the cheap desktop printers.

In the end I quite enjoy bashing stl files together and I enjoy painting. I don't fancy having to learn to print so it's easier just to pay the "professional" to do it for me. If I want to win a competition though I would buy a professionally manufacturered piece to start with.

I'm sure this was true 5 years ago. Maybe it was true a year ago. I spent 5 minutes setting up my printer. It's for idiots. If you can use a laserjet you can use this. I haven't spilled resin everywhere and nothing's blown up, caught fire or melted everywhere. I download stl files, stick them through the (provided) slicer, copy them over and print them. I printed this yesterday:

Those little skulls are less than 1mm across. You can see their eye sockets. I can't see any ridges. It's just as good on the back, top, underneath. I have no idea why people are absolutely refusing to believe that the technology might have improved recently. I didn't know, but I had a look and yes, it has. 'Learning to print' simply isn't a thing. The manual for this thing is about 5 pages long. It's a piece of piss.

Learning to sculpt, now, that's a thing. And now I want sausages.

Did I imagine it or at some point did one of them say they were disappointed that the royal family would 'lie to protect one member [Sweaty Andrew] but wouldn't tell the truth to protect another [Meghan]'? I'm sure I heard that said today and isn't that basically them admitting that Andrew can sweat?

Learning to sculpt, now, that's a thing. And now I want sausages.

I know multiple people with 3D printers, and I have at least a kilo of resin printed stuff.

The guy who's doing print for me at the moment told me that my latest design had something like a 20% success rate. He had to run the print 5x to get me what I needed. Previously some prints ripped the film off his plate and lead to a good amount of mess. A goon who very kindly help me with some other stuff spend loads of time figuring out how to temperature regulate his printer to stop it failing.

I've had a bust print from another company. Professional (more) outfit. It still had some faint print lines and some residual supports that needed clearing. Also some very slight layer shifts that needed to be sanded down. It was reasonable enough to paint for fun and practice, but it won't be winning any competitions based on the print imperfections alone. I've got some resin cast busts which have none of those issues.

These are all from the past year.

I've got a pile of 3D printed Battletech stuff from the game. Far better than the cast stuff from Iron Wind Metals but all of GW's Titanicus models still blows it out of the water.

I've seen misprints, prints that spontaneously exploded when washed, warped prints, blobbed out parts, and missing details. Also from the printing side - like someone else mentioned, it's fine until it fucks up then you have to spend a shitload of time rectifying the problem.

That cupola is a very simple print. I have only casting experience but even I can see that it would be dead simple to pull off. It has a wide base, tapers to the top, minimal undercuts and no weird organic shapes. You're not going to be getting a print of one of GW's floaty-floaty designs off so nicely.

Printing is fine for some things but at this time it won't be displacing the really high end manufacturers (eg GW). Terrain and custom parts are great. Unusual designs that no one will produce commercially is another niche (probably why its popular with railway grogs). I'm not gonna buy a 3D printed Space Marine though if I can get the real thing in plastic. Just sign me up for all the 3D printed conversion bits.

That sphere tends to go for stuff that's no longer available or just trying to reproduce existing models with more detail in my experience. I can only think of one or two really out there 3D prints (that were successful) which seemed to gain traction online. For locos and rolling stock of course. For buildings and scenery I've found railway modellers go for more traditional methods because building a 30's hotel from plasticard, a pack of 2H pencils, and some cardboard is way more fun than hitting 'print'.

So uh is that a normal amount for what seems to have been a one-day remote hearing of a request for an injunction?

The costs are mostly for the work leading up to the hearing. Drafting applications take a long time, gathering evidence, reviewing it, sending letters, briefing your counsel, it all adds up.

This is steep admittedly but given how high profile a case it is and the issues involved not completely extraordinary.

One of the replacement candidates sounds okay (2 time Corbyn leadership voter, self-described socialist) to the point where I'm kinda surprised they even allowed her to take their place. She is a former CPS business consultant and I guess Starmer's proof of what that can mean. Also almost perfectly shares a name with the allegedly corrupt former mayor which is fun.

The other one's an Yvette Cooper/Owen Smith voter so I guess it's an easy choice.

Not only did I not do it, I'll never do it and broadly don't like the avatar change system in the forums and think it should be changed. My understanding is that the only anti-bullying measure is that it's slightly more expensive for someone to change the avatar of another user than it is for that user to change it back, this is obviously a dogshit system because it's regressive; all the cost differential actually does is allow rich posters to potentially bully poor posters. Once or twice I have thought of funny nasty avatars I could buy for posters I don't like but my immediate thought was always 'what if they post in other threads, what if this online community actually means something to them, what if they legit don't have the money to easily change their avatar back' and then don't do it.
