Moreover he sees everything as a business transaction, which while laughable considering his business record, means if push comes to shove he likely won’t actually commit to materially helping Japan or Taiwan or whathaveyou. Plus he in general weakens the US’s position in the world by sabotaging long held alliances. His being anti-China is pure bluster to appeal to the baser instincts of his base.

The american foreign policy establishment likely to return with Biden after the election is hegemonically anti-PRC and also much smarter about it, which is saying something given how bad they are. They just don't do racist rants about Chinese people from the rally stage (said racism will also extend to Japanese people because that's how american races are structured, so is also not good for Japan even cynically).

Who the gently caress in their right mind who has paid any amount of attention to the Trump presidency could possibly call him Tough On China? Because he started a useless trade war with them that inflicted more damage to himself than to them? Because he tried and failed to blame them for Covid, a stance that was so anemic that even his most lickspittle Senators don't bother repeating it anymore? Because he's trying to gently caress over their children by screwing with Student visas, which their universities are already fighting and beating? Because he claimed to ban travel from their country when he in fact did not? He hosed over Hong Kong, he's probably loving over Taiwan some way I'm not aware of, he forced South Korea to start taking a more imperative stance toward détente with the North by placing our military alliance on shaky ground, he blew up the TPP which increased Chinese economic hegemony in the region, he's done nothing to strengthen relations with Japan or shore up with position in the regional hierarchy, he's increased general American recalcitrance toward African aide making them even more susceptible to Chinese neo-imperialist influence, he's done nothing to deter their human rights abuses against the Uighurs because 1) they're Muslims and 2) he needs to protect Stock Market Number by not having his fake Trade War Resolution talks blown up, he's done nothing about their continued aggression in the South China Sea... like, what is strong about ANY part of his policy?

Because he claimed to ban travel from their country when he in fact did not? I think people who don't speak English and get all their news from TV have a fairly limited perspective on Trump and what he's doing. My father-in-law told me he hopes Trump wins the other day, and I asked him why, and it's because I guess Trump was nice to the Yokotas but Obama just ignored them. I pointed out that Trump couldn't lick Kim Jong Un's balls hard enough and certainly hasn't lifted a finger to help the Yokotas or to do anything about the abduction issue, and there's no reason to think he ever will, but FIL says just not ignoring them is enough. Well, okay then. Edit: I don't actually know if it's true that Trump was nicer to the Yokotas than Obama, but the late Mr. Yokota definitely made his preference clear for Republican presidential candidates and presidents over the last 20 years or so, and that might have influenced how he was treated or how he claimed he was treated, and he always maintained that Republican presidents would be tougher on North Korea than Democrats, even though in actual fact neither party did anything for him, so I think there's this prevailing view that a Republican president will be tougher that is based on ??? the Yokotas' opinions and the Iraq war I guess? I don't think it has anything to do with Trump himself. LyonsLions fucked around with this message at 05:15 on Oct 14, 2020 |

Perception of Trump is very much based on the media you watch. My relatives in Taiwan are pretty OK with Trump only because of his apparently hard line attitude towards the PRC. Even in Australia there are a lot of people who assume that Trump is a effective president who gets things done in a “break a few eggs to make an omelet” sort of way. Unsurprisingly these people consume a lot of Murdoch media products. It’s quite difficult to fathom just how awful he is without a decent comprehension of US politics and an understanding of English. Telling people like this about the number of coronavirus cases and deaths in America and why it’s happened the way it’s happened just gets you incredulous responses. Same deal with everything else coming from his presidency, it doesn’t match with what the media is telling them and the parade politics Trump plays. existential anger fucked around with this message at 07:47 on Oct 14, 2020 |

Hullo Japanese politics thread. I have accepted a job in Tohoku, (they will be giving me the specifics later), hopefully starting in March 2021. I am currently in the middle of the Visa process. Unfortunately, as you all know, Japan has closed it's borders for the month of January. All being well, this shouldn't affect me, as I should arrive in March, do my quarantine, and then start work come the beginning of the School year. But I am asking you, coz I assume you will be much better informed than I am. What are the chances of the border closures being extended? The company is telling me they are moving forward with all the Visa stuff, and that I shouldn't worry too much. But am I likely to be denied entry/have the Visa process halted? I will be flying in from Australia, (as opposed to the US or UK), so that should make it a little more likely I will be allowed in, if that helps. I apologize if this is a stupid question, and I thank you for your answers.

He gets brought up once a year or so since he made his own party, but when I look it up and try to see any of it in detail, it looks like he's been pretty much entirely unsuccessful. Is there something I'm missing here where it's actually taking hold, or is this just a clickbait thing trying to target Western leftists by talking about "BERNIE SANDERS IN JAPAN?"

I'm guessing more towards the latter given the country's more conservative fiscal economics, the lack of socialist grassroots and the current relative power of the LDP.

Japan seems to like social welfare programs but is not very good at managing or funding them. My prefecture, in the last year, finally decided to put the burden of municipal taxes on employers, so it is now deducted from my pay rather than sent as a bill for me to pay. The national government still hasn't figured out how to get people to pay into the pension system - not that I'm complaining since if they decided to try they'd probably do the same as with the NHK tax and subcontract it out to people going door to door. (I pay my pension - I know a lot of foreigners and Japanese who do not). I kind of wish they'd check pension payments as part of visa renewal. Doesn't help with all the deadbeat locals who don't pay into the system, but it would at least get everyone else paying, and help me feel less like a chump for doing my civic duty.

I know the latter isn't ubiquitous, I remember the ALT company didn't have that automatically withheld in the past. and if you're a US American here for mid-term (so longer than a 2-3 years) you should pay into pension because it'll count towards Social Security payments. EDIT: Yeah I've heard from my ALT/Eikaiwa folks that their companies actively tell them they should not and don't have to sign up for pension and such. I never paid into the pension for years when I was a student but when I started working I had to do it and also make all the backpayments so I thought it would be a hefty chunk of cash. Turns out they only told me to pay like 15,000 yen in the end

They’re trying to improve things for full-time employees of companies - minimum number of vacation days taken, time card accuracy for non-management staff being two I can think of directly. But, in truly shocking news, the number of jobs considered full-time employment is going down and positions that previously would’ve been shain are more so going on a contract basis.
