Volmarias posted:That's the biggest flaw of use it or lose it, workplaces with that just end up with no one actually working in December. Hahaha yep, this was a big problem at the two smaller companies I worked for. You could only rollover like 40 hours, and people rarely used their PTO because the culture was poo poo and it's a problem if the only people with access or knowledge about something are out. So come December, it's a scheduling nightmare as people are trying to use it up, but nope this other person is out so you can't be out at the same time. Anyway don't work for a company with fewer than 30 employees.

I work at sea as an engineer on container ships. The amount of short sighted stupidity occurring is astounding. When you order spare parts for the machinery you wait weeks or months to actually receive them so obviously you can’t just wait until something breaks down and stops the ship before you ask for a replacement. Every single time I put in requisitions they get knocked back or cut because it’s deemed unnecessary by someone back in the office who doesn’t know which end of a hammer you hold on to. They love to find “good deals” on fuel which then proceeds to destroy our system and wreck the components of the engine because it’s sludge trash. These fuckers get rewarded for keeping the spend down on the budget and face zero comeuppance when a break down costs the company a fortune because they wanted to cheap out. Turns out maintaining a 200 million dollar ship costs money? 🤔

Technically I get two weeks vacation at my job but it has to accumulate over the duration of the year, so you really only get the full 2 weeks if you work without taking a vacation. And it has to be approved, and is usually not approved. For example people wanted to take an extra couple days after Christmas but the time was not approved because of production reasons. So it really amounts to some extra money on the last paycheck of the year.

I just had a call to set up an interview for a position I applied to a while back. They had applicants do a one way video interview (just answering bs questions on video to weed out applicants), pulled the position, and then had the same position open up elsewhere. On the phone call the person from the company was telling me about the position, and she said theres honestly not much upward mobility. If I was working there for two years and got some sort of certification I could be at a senior level of my position, getting maybe $5/hr more in total. She mentioned this because in my one way video interview I said I wanted to leave my current position because of the lack of upward mobility. I didnt want to tell her that a) i said that because, while true, I actually just hate my job and didnt want to say that and b) ill just leave this place for more money anyway whenever the time is right. I hope I get the job.

Just conducted an interview for a fairly high level position within my current company and the candidate kept bursting out with 'that's really stupid I've never heard of a company doing that before' and my inside voice was very much 'yeah it's true but this is us putting a positive spin on all this bullshit, you aren't going to survive a month without a heavily defeatist attitude and lack of any imagination'. Anyway she's not getting invited back because the HR rep in on the interview vetoed it and it's a narrow escape for the candidate. 6 working days left at this hellhole. titty_baby_ posted:I didnt want to tell her that a) i said that because, while true, I actually just hate my job and didnt want to say that and b) ill just leave this place for more money anyway whenever the time is right. While I was interviewing last month I got a really refreshing exchange along the lines of; "Why do you want to leave?" "There aren't many opportunities here for advancement, most of the staff at the level above me have been here 15 years or more" "That's bullshit, why are you feeding me bullshit?" "Because this is an interview and I don't want to be seen to talk poo poo about my current employer" "Good answer, give me the truth though" "It's stifling, depressing, old fashioned, they make us wear a suit working from home, everyone I work with is boring (but nice enough), they put us on a pay freeze, they won't give me the job title for the job I've been doing for 3 years, I'm being forced to work on a product I hate, they are significantly underpaying me for that specialist work by at least 30%" Actually the interview was hell, 2 hours of cross examination, preceded by 3 hours of practical examination and another hour long interview, but I got the job! When I handed my notice in my current employer had to immediately put a hold on about $1m of work and start desperately recruiting 2 people to take my place (and they will have to pay them both more than they were paying me). Definite lol. Worth it for the experience I got, but it was still 3 1/2 years of misery. Now I'm moving to a job I should love and getting paid significantly more.

I work in a department that was literally created to create more jobs using the governments money instead of our own, to work on projects we wouldn't have to do if we just planned our expansion better, to improve water quality for water that might, in the wettest part of the year reach the nearby river, only after going thru a dairy. And our water quality has actually just gotten worse in a number of ways since our departments founding. My job is perfomative and cyclical, going off of work plans that are all recycled because we know the govt will fund them, doing the same half assed projects year in and year out with no actual improvements in the data we gather. We create programs in parallel with other departments doing the same programs instead of collaborating with them, because when we do something we do the bare minimum just to have a deliverable while then spending the money elsewhere. Its not about results, Its all smoke and mirrors to say we did work and to justify our existence. My coworker, who was our interim director for a short time, asked me what I would do with the department. I told them I'd fire myself, outsource a lot of the programs to other departments or interns, and just cut the department way down to just provide our organization the bare minimum (one person who understands how to get permits sorted). They seemed shocked at my callousness.

Sometimes they'll generously give a new hire a week's vacation to start like it's coming out of the manager's pocket. Somehow our management has never figured out that it is more costly to constantly be restaffing positions and hiring expensive contractors for critical roles than to simply pay industry standard wages/benefits.

Yeah it's pretty incredible how managers and bosses talk about making sacrifices for the company when they have never and will never do any such thing. You'll pry their golf time, month long vacations in Aspen and quarterly stock options from their cold dead lich hands. The worse the company is doing, the better the people at the top are doing. Also the same thing if the company is doing really well.

I am very happy that I have a job with sick pay. It means I don't have to do a terrible job and/or risk infecting other people in the office or during my commute without worrying about money. I was once a retail manager, and my store had such budget cuts from corporate that I was often the only person present for several hours at a time each day. One day I was really sick, called the regional manager to say she needed to find someone else, but she didn't believe me (this was my first sick day in a year). I made it into work, where she proceeded to watch me throw up into a toilet and threatened me with disciplinary action if I didn't open the shop that morning. This was a health store that sold fruit, nuts, various frozen/refridgerated health foods and vitamin supplements etc. So it left a really good impression on customers that the sole present employee was extremely visibly unwell. The good news is that a couple of months later I decided that I was going to resume my education instead so I told aforementioned regional manager that I was handing in my resignation, and that she had 4.5 hours to find a replacement. She was furious, and I pointed out that in all the years I'd been there she had refused to give me a new contract, so I was still on the original contract I signed when I was a 16 year old Saturday morning assistant which clearly said I had to give one shift's (4.5 hours) worth of notice. Gave her the keys and told her to go gently caress herself.

We have a "recognition" program where you're supposed to thank another employee for doing something good (helping you out on a task, cross-team collaboration, fixing incidents, etc). If their boss likes it, they give the recognition a "boost", which means they get $25 added to a gift card. They do this in lieu of giving people decent raises. Those [decent raises] only happen when you move up an employee level, otherwise it's just a simple 2-4% bump. The problem is that the recognitions also tie into your yearly bonus. You can get an additional 5-10% (if your bonus is 10%, then you can get 10.5-11%), but that additional amount only goes to a handful of employees under each director, who could easily have hundreds of employees in their organization, and is.largely determined by who got the most recognitions.

I'm familiar with the horror stories, too - I used to to work for really small contractors (zero vacation or sick pay) and private industry (poo poo pay, demoralizing work, no upward mobility, poo poo bosses, creepy coworkers) I think someone would have to offer me at least 3x more money than I make now just based on convenience/love for the job. For the last seems like forever my work has been upgrading the reception area and moved the changing /locker area. So first my locker got moved but halved in size, and now they've realised they don't have enough and are taking it away from me and other people that don't deserve one. I've asked where they expect me to keep valuables, like should I take my mobile phone into a production area against procedure, so I'm expecting a lovely email in return

You can nominate someone for an award which is $25 in corporate store credit that is more a way of making someone's manager aware that person was helpful enough to navigate the award system. Then you have the "level" awards that are now just money added to your check. A few years ago it could be money or the team giving the award could decide on a gift for the recipient from a list of things like Apple Watches, Hoverboards, tablets, cameras and other tech stuff. I don't think it ever tied into the budget for bonuses because or company didn't offer them at all last year, but I still got a few hundred dollars in level awards.

Dysfunctional team in my last workplace implemented the rewards thing. I told them I thought it was a bad idea. Unsurprisingly, some people who already felt underappreciated got very upset that they got 0 nominations, some people who were popular but useless got lots, and people who worked in the big team all backpatted each other while people who kept entire systems running on their lonesome got nowt. Some people did like it though. I find the whole concept kind of humiliating and weird, I’m not going to change my behaviour to earn little treats from my boss/coworkers, just pay me a good salary ffs

I've never seen an appreciation program be something other than a massive disaster. Worst case is they contract out to reward points vendors that are straight out of highschool fundraisers where you earn hundreds of points to buy stuff out of a catalog where anything useful starts at thousands and you buy points to make up the difference. But let's say it's cash or gift cards which are instantly exchangeable at least. I've only ever seen it go two ways stemming from everybody forgetting the program even exists until December: 1. A massive graft system where everybody pairs off and cashes out their allotment tit for tat 2. A manager notices the massive graft, gates rewards behind management, and then either completely forgets about it so noone gets anything or dishes then out equally at the end anyway.
