yeah samar was completely nuts. destroyers charging battleships and the large battleship shells just punching right through the destroyer, looney tunes style, causing minimal damage - because the shells were designed to hit much larger ships at much greater distance. it got so hairy that american pilots stopped searching for their own home carriers and just landed on any friendly carrier to get gassed up and rearmed

if you're not a milhist nerd - during the american re-capture of the philippines in late 1943 and as part of a complex series of battles called the battle of leyte gulf, a large force of japanese heavy ships (including the largest battleship ever built, ever) completely jumps on a small escort force (taffy 3) of light carriers and destroyers screening the offloading of defenseless transports off the coast of the island of samar. the japanese heaviest battleship ever, yamato, by itself outweighed all other american ships in taffy 3 combined. the american force can't even run away fast enough because the escort carriers are too slow. so the escorting destroyers charge directly into the teeth of the japanese force, putting on a tremendous show of hopeless bravery before many of them get shot to pieces. their resistance was enough to prevent the japanese ships from shooting up the allied transports

It's not just the destroyers charging in. The USS Samuel B. Roberts was in there as well. A destroyer escort. 75% the total length and half the tonnage of the destroyers in that fight.

But Halsey didn't and not only did he not do that, he issued orders that gave the impression to his superiors that he had. Halsey then, when called out by his boss for his error, threw a hissyfit for about a half hour before sending help.

wikipedia says:

3,000 nautical miles (3,500 mi; 5,600 km) away at Pearl Harbor, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz had monitored the desperate calls from Taffy 3, and sent Halsey a terse message: "Where is TF 34?". To complicate decryption, communications officers were to add a nonsense phrase at both ends of a message, in this case, "Turkey trots to water" and suffixed with "The world wonders." The receiving radioman repeated the "where is" section of this message and his staff failed to remove the trailing phrase "the world wonders." A simple query by a distant supervisor had, through the random actions of three sailors, become a stinging rebuke.

Halsey was infuriated since he did not recognize the final phrase as padding, possibly chosen for the 90th anniversary of the Charge of the Light Brigade. He threw his hat to the deck and began to curse."

the Battle Off Samar article on wikipedia is long but very much worth reading.

Halsey was highly aggressive, which played well into his overall legend but more often than not, his sailors paid the price for his aggressiveness, not the Japanese. More cautious admirals were not as well regarded in the press but compare Halsey's actions there, where the Japanese used their carriers as bait which Halsey was all too happy to take with how Spruance handled chasing the defeated Japanese fleet after Midway. Spruance took poo poo for not chasing the defeated Japanese fleet, but at the time the Japanese were well trained in night engagements and the US was ... not. Later night fights around Guadalcanal showed just how badly this would have potentially gone had US carriers stumbled across the Japanese surface fleet, but Spruance still took poo poo for what is almost certainly the right call in hindsight. So yeah, Connery's character was right.

Crucially, the Japanese misidentified all the American ships being a class heavier than they were, so they never switched away from armour-piercing shells.

The F-104 was designed at a moment when we had realized supersonic flight required a very different design from subsonic but when we had not yet realized that you still have to accommodate subsonic flight because it's not possible for the aircraft to always be supersonic 100% of the time. So it's very, very good at flying fast in a straight line but not very good at turning, landing, and taking off

It's extra funny because the F-104 had a known tendency to lose control when sharply pitching up

It was also OSHA In that the wings had edges sharp enough to be a danger to ground crews. They made protective guards for them.
