I managed 4-6 months between changes and stopped clearing the filter for 2 years.

Also huge lmao at them trotting out the '26 police officers were injured during the protest'. They've done that before and a FOI request found out the injuries were bug bites and toothache.

It's a long-held principle in English law that you can't obstruct the police by simply refusing to cooperate with them or refusing to do something; you must take some kind of positive action to criminally obstruct or resist them.

I went to the thing this afternoon and overheard a WPC make precisely this argument to some of the women there; you are putting us in danger by being here and we have the right to do whatever we want as a consequence. They absolutely believe without question that they are beholden to no-one, and they are right. No-one is going to be held accountable for any of it. Nothing will get better; everything will get worse.

Right, I know plenty of people with no dog in either race who hate the Order just on the principle of them grinding the entire city to a halt on a loving whim, or deciding they really need to mark The Battle Of A Random Residential Street at 9am on a sunday morning with tin whistles and loving bass drums.

Every year someone rightly asks "Why can't you just do a big loop around Glasgow Green if you really have to parade" and the answer is a thinly-veiled "because it's about making sure everyone else knows about us".

I've seen similar. They've started up the narrative that other groups had "hijacked" the vigil, requiring them to throw some women for some reason.

This whole thing has been a really eye-opening experience in to the amount of bootlicking present on Twitter, and the UK in general.

English law has never been particularly respectful of a right to protest (in the same way as it's never been particularly respectful of a right to freedom of speech), and where it exists at all it has historically been heavily qualified. The current situation underpinned by the Human Rights Act is the outlier; the proposed changes in the new Bill read to me like nothing so much as trying to get back to the situation before the Public Order Act 1986, and the old common law offence of unlawful assembly.

I think I've always been aware, but more so in the last year or so, of just how fundamentally broken British society is. The amount of hand-wringing, whataboutism and bootlicking on the internet around this is starting to give me serious anxiety.

I experienced a little bit of success with my career, but I think I'm firmly back in the "burn it all down and start again" camp again.

edit: Like seriously, it's really upsetting to see the trajectory we're on and most of the world continuing on blindly towards destruction. Even just saying "poo poo's hosed!" and having someone reply, "I know, right?" is seriously good for not feeling like you're going completely insane.

Nice one! Hope you got something out of it!

I've been thinking about trying to do a law conversion - it seems like one of the few careers that will stretch me while also managing to link in with what I care about. Obviously would go into immigration, employment or public order (on the defending side of things obviously). Anyone got any tips/reasons this is a terrible idea? Would be good to talk to someone who's done similar. Also willing to hear arguments for this being a counter-revolutionary strategy

You say that, but I work with someone (much better paid and more senior than me) who genuinely said the other day that Starmer is biding his time and will one day be launching a sudden strike at Johnson for all the government's failings during the pandemic. He said that it will be great because Starmer is 'so precise' that it will be a joy to watch. Nice to see that the 'forensic' meme has embedded itself.

I didn't know that people actually thought this poo poo. The even better thing is that, because of where I work, I keep my cards very close to my chest, politically speaking. So much so that this same guy (who also said that he was relieved when Corbyn went because he'd damaged the Party so much) can't figure out if I'm to the right or to the left of him.
