spacetoaster posted:Medical MOS's in the reserves aren't too bad as everyone, everywhere, has a shortage. Which means you might be assigned to the unit near your home, but if you ever get bored you can take a job somewhere else for a few weeks/months. Cool. I'll definitely look into it a bit more and reach out to an AMEDD recruiter if I get selected. Should hear in the next month or so if I am lucky enough to shill out a bunch of cash for my third degree piece of paper.

Nice and hot piss posted:50k for the reserves? and I think that a majority of those only cover undergraduate programs. Mine would be a doctoral program. The dude I was talking about was getting a master's paid off. I don't know how they handle PhD's. Yeah, you gotta get that MOS changed to something like a 42 series (human resources). Your best bet is to physically walk into the recruiting office and just get the recruiter tell you what's available. And remember, that stuff changes every month (sometimes every week). They might be hot about MP's this week, and completely reverse it next week. If the dude can't give you what you want just leave and come back a few weeks later. If you can find a former recruiter who's serving at a nearby reserve unit THAT is your go to guy. He's still got all the contacts, and knows how the system works. And isn't beholden to some BS quota. *edit* Yeah, call the medical recruiter. spacetoaster fucked around with this message at 01:36 on Feb 17, 2021 |

The first, with my recruiter, was unexceptional. The second, with a career counselor, went much more in my favor. I rocked down to the CC office as an E-4 and said, "I want a bonus and I want choice of duty station." She typed a little on the computer and said they didn't have that for my MOS. I said, "okay, college it is. thank you sergeant" and left. My phone rang with her number before I got back to the barracks and she had "found what I was looking for." Never forget that these people are evaluated by how many signatures they get and their promotions and future assignments ride on it.

I'm considering actually going through the Health service scholarship program for the U.S army. I would have to pick up 3 years of service active duty wise, but the rate of nurse prac's getting jobs right out of school is slim because of the glut of oncoming NP's from diploma mill universities. Having 3 years of practice would be pretty nice. Anyone ever go through this? it looks like it was extended to family nurse pracs, but I don't see anything on the current website, just bits and pieces from other .mil sites so I can't tell if things changed for FY2021

I got one of those emails saying that I’m a candidate for a covid deployment(signed up last year) and now I’m like... so cut me orders then? You won’t. Oh you need my critical MOS? Do it. Do it! It’s reserve not guard which is why I feel so skeptical.

Man, I’m at the 2-star level in the Reserve and I’m not even sure what the point is. We just put our candidates list together yesterday.

They tasked a bunch of medics in my unit with that. They've been on a 2 hour recall and GO1 for a few weeks now...kind of unnecessary IMO. Especially considering that we are not waiting for a special event like we're about to go to war or something.

Does anyone know much about the Army's street to seat program? I have a relative in the states who's trying put in for a packet in addition to NROTC programs and Air Force ROTC. He's got solid grades, a strong interest in aviation and wants to fly more than anything. I think he will pass the SIFT no problem. Just wanted to know if this is a decent career choice as far as the military is concerned. As I understand it he'd become a warrant officer if he doesn't wash out. Will he have a decent shot at becoming a civilian airline or cargo pilot after his service obligation expires? Also I googled how often Army helicopters crash or get shot down and its made me nervous. He doesn't seem to care though.

Isn't the commitment for aviators in the Army now like 10 years after training completion or some poo poo? I can't imagine signing a contract for that amount of time having never once experienced life in the military previously.

If he wants to go civilian flying encourage him to look USN or USAF. I know one helo guy who transitioned to fixed wings in the Army and that's a very small, niche thing from what he told me.

The airlines are so desperate for pilots they'll pay for a fixed wing transition. Or they were so desperate till the pandemic, it'll probably tick back up once things get back to normal. Flight school is a 10 year ADSO. If your friend just wants to be a pilot, he should go to a civilian flight school. If he wants to be in the Army for 10 years, he should go Warrant.

Kraftwerk posted:Does anyone know much about the Army's street to seat program? i was gonna effortpost a response but the truth is i'm pretty cynical when it comes to aviation now so it'd be all negatives, and that's why i switched careers. just make sure they know that aviation is a volatile industry, and the status quo now (airlines are hiring - and even that is assuming a return to the pre-pandemic situation) is almost certainly not going to be the same 10 years from now. doubly true for rotary wing civilian careers. if he really wants to fly for a living, he should look at airline academy pipelines and just skip the time-sink of military service obligations. yes, this is expensive.

Or, if he really wants to fly helicopters, go to a civilian school and spend time teaching or flying a tour helicopter until he has 2000 hours and can get an air ambulance job. By going the civilian route he'll have a better understanding of how civilian aviation works than coming from a military career.

The only thing you could do that might bait me back into the military is to fast track me through flight school and let me be a pilot. But if there was a 0.000000000000000......0001% of me being recycled back into the infantry I’d tell you no thanks.

I'm late 30s and dumb enough that I might go do that. The Navy didn't let me leave when SF green lit me for a service transfer and candidacy (thanks TRUMP and needing a BIGLY NAVY). I know guys that went SOF later and the key recurring themes are a high level of motivation and focus and also being too loving stupid for their own good. I was rolling along pretty well and out of that mode then I got to organic chemistry, at least.
