It's not giving people vaccines it's making it easier for people who specifically have one of the Chinese developed vaccines.

You know the ones they're heavily promoting but have worse efficacy.

I am in HK and want to get a Chinese visa again. I am eligible to be vaccinated and there are currently two options: Sinovac and Pfizer. However, to get the Chinese visa so I can travel from one part of China to another part of China I cannot get Pfizer because it is made in the EU, which means I have to choose the 50% effective made in China vaccine and forego the 95% effective one.

It's not bad as in like totally ineffective or dangerous, it's just not close to as effective as the others. I think current real world data has it at somewhere around 55%? Still better than nothing.

The Chinese vaccine is only 50% effective at preventing infection, but it's nearly 100% effective at preventing death. It's strictly worse than the Western vaccines but if you received it you can be reasonably sure you won't be hospitalized or killed by COVID.

also here's a stupid take
---------------------------->
Priority 1 for a vaccine is stopping people from dying or getting severely ill to the point that they require intensive care, meaning less strain on the medical system. Every vaccine there is right now appears to be effective with this.

Priority 2 for a vaccine is to make it so that infections are nipped in the bud by the immune reaction to the point where they don't cause symptoms and are effectively no longer able to spread. The greater efficacy in a vaccine at doing this, the easier it is to achieve herd immunity. Western vaccines are far superior for this. IIRC the Chinese vaccine barely meets the WHO threshold for a sufficiently effective vaccine.

Yes this is true and I'm going to get the Sinovac jab, it's generally safe and does prevent serious covid, so although I would have preferred Pfizer it doesn't matter too much because my primary goal is to get into China('s mainland).

Don't worry about the effectiveness # too much cuz all the numbers are probably worthless now that every state of the US and most countries have a variant and the original numbers are 4-5 months old now. P much every vaccine is less effective at generating an immune response for quite a few of the variants, including the mRNA ones.

In a few months there'll be like a Pfizer 2.0 you'll need to get to protect against those ones better.

tldr its not one and done, if you wanna go to china might as well get the Chinese one since at least you get an added tangible benefit.

This is something I'm not very knowledgeable about, but I thought they actually were serious about trying to stop desertification via planting and such.

What is driving it? Just climate change or something else? Diverting rivers?

Edit: Looks like overgrazing and irrigation, like a lot of places.

Not really, the yellow dust rarely makes it to the southeast corner where I lived, it's not like Seoul.

They are planting a shitload of trees to try to slow it down but it's not working all that well. It's the usual drivers. Climate change, deforestation, bad agricultural practices.

Like I'm sure there's some industrial pollution in there but it really is just the seasonal dust storms that happen every spring. Beijing is a lot closer to the Gobi Desert than you might think. It's pretty much just right over that belt of mountains north of the city.

I heard a lot about it, but in Namhae we didn't get much "yellow dust" at all.

But in PyeongChang, I got the job at the hagwon where I worked because the previous English Teacher, (an American woman), did a runner because living in a tiny Korean town in the mountains was too polluted for her, and was causing her respiratory distress. So she might have had a different answer. I never had any problems in PyeongChang, (apart from not getting paid for the last two months, and finding out that I wasn't getting health insurance or the pension payments I was owed. But those are different stories.)

Yeah, reading more into it now. Desertification seems really hard to stop once it gets going, even with Chinese levels of state resources to throw at it.

You're right about Beijing. I forget how far north it is. Puts into perspective why there are portions of the great wall right outside the city on the mountains, since beyond there be horsemen.

Do you know if it that bad every dust season? Or is this some sort of new highpoint?

I see some places that it's the worst since 2017, but that's counting PM2.5, not PM10. It must suck more than usual to be a delivery driver, not only is it bad to breathe but accidents always go up when visibility is bad.

They would probably deport them to their birth nations and most nations would likely take them in as refugees.

Would be quite amusing to have some of (or *the*?) only white and black Chinese though. Something similar to the early White Russians who chose to settle in Japan, or some of the Russians that lived in territory that eventually went to the Japanese and could choose Japanese citizenship way back.

Much less unique because there's a clear and relatively easy path to citizenship in modern Japan though, for all that relatively few choose it due to lack of recognized dual citizenship.

tldr: Chinese Adult Children literately cannot live an independent live even if they try their hardest - the state doesn't sanction it. And I hate the 户口 (Hu Kou, Household Registration) system.

Some random thought I had today when I was reading relationship problems on Chinese social media (think something like https://www.reddit.com/r/relationships/). The amount of posts I’ve read that complains how their parent’s don’t agree with their relationship and how they can’t get married without the blessing of their parents - I used to be very confused and annoyed, and in a way I thought it was simply that my fellow Chinese youth are not independent enough.

But I was thinking today well what if they just want to do it? What if they just don’t give a poo poo about what their parents think of their girlfriend / girlfriend and they just elope? Turns out you literately cannot.

To get legally married in China, you need something called 户口本 (Household Register Booklet). It’s a booklet that lists who is in your family and information about each personal (and your relationship to one another). For example, a couple has a child, all 3 of their names will be listed on the Household Register Booklet. After a child becomes an adult, they aren’t just automatically another “household” or an individual. They remain within the Household, legally speaking. Until they can find a way to register for a new household that’s separate from their parents’. And conditions may vary depends on the province, most of the rules goes like this:
1. You are married, your and your new partner becomes a new household.
2. If you’re an unmarried adult child, you have to prove that you are financial independent and that you own a property and live there (that is not the same address as your parents’).
3. Or if you are good at Gao Kao (Chinese College Entrance Exam), you get into a good university at a city that needs to attract a young professional work force, you graduate from the university and stay in the city to work for 3-5 years or longer to get a 户口 of your own, sometimes without the requirements of a property purchase. The most recent number I can find is that 8% of Chinese’s total population is college educated. If you go this route, you HAVE to move to a different city when you go to college and you have to manage to stay and find a good job afterwards.

So this means, if you are one the majority of the ordinary people in China, your parents literately CAN stop you from getting married. All these posts of people complaining “my parents has hid our House Registration Booklet to stop me from getting married” or “my dad said unless X amount of dowry is paid, he won’t allowed us to get married AKA he won’t give us the House Registration Booklet” is…not just because the young couple’s love is not strong enough. It’s because they simply JUST CAN’T get married without this stupid little booklet that also controls many other aspects of their life.

Oh and some provinces offer “digital house registration booklet” services now, where you can have it on your phone. However, you need the actual booklet to get the digital booklet, so that’s sort of a moo point if you couldn’t get access to the original booklet to begin with.

I hate the Hu Kou system and I often get dragged into a rabbit hole (by myself) to discover many aspects of this system that's fascinating and terrifying. For people in this thread, I love to know what you think of Hu Kou and what you know of it.

Yeah we’re thinking of doing an episode on our podcast about how bad it is.

As a person who grew up in China, I even forget how ingrained it is in every Chinese person’s lives sometimes. Or like beside the lack of freedom to criticize the government, how that’s not even trivial compare to these many other restrictions on people’s everyday lives.
