But People have fears that beasts do not. Questions, too.

The air is crisp and brittle with anticipation. It has been so for two and a half years. The DIE is late. Very late. So late that fools had been lulled into thinking it was dead, or lost in the Between. Fools indeed. The old tales told that the DIE cannot be destroyed fully, only banished, and yet they thought it gone. Two and a half years ago, the organs of aurochs had crackled and boiled in the heat and revealed that the DIRE INSCRUTABLE ENGINE was due to return. How the haruspices had wailed with terror and grief! They had wailed, and you had prepared. And prepared. And prepared.

And now… the DIE was upon you. From your various cities across the land you heard it calling out and you craned your heads up for a sight of it. You, all you Hexen - time to move. The DIRE INSCRUTABLE ENGINE has come, and unless you stop it it will ravage this land to pieces. Again.

OVERVIEW posted:

Welcome to DIE! Some great distance in the past, someone created the Dire Engine to crush their foes. Over the ensuing centuries, it has returned over and over and over to fulfil some long forgotten purpose. It cannot be bargained with. It cannot be understood. It cannot even be destroyed… but it can be stopped. Driven off, forced into torpor once more. Luckily, your people have gotten very good at this. You, Hexenfolk, have trained since youth to harness fragments of its magic passed through the generations. You know the charms, you know your weapons inside and out, you know this land… but will it be enough? We’ll see!

First pick a name, a portrait, a starting position (any tile in or adjacent to any City tile), one of the two Weapons and any two Artifacts from the list below in the Archive. The DIE will arise someplace on the map once you’ve positioned yourself, then you’ll have to go drive it off. It is big. Very, very large indeed. Its size means that it will shake off your piddly attacks and likely crush you by accident. No problem - if you die, hop back in immediately with the same rules.

How, you ask, is it fair that you must contend against such a beast? Surely under my power it will kill you outright? Probably - but it’s not under my power. The Dire Inscrutable Engine is Inscrutable even to me. Each round, it will roll to select a Primary System to guide its actions, then a Subsystem within that to give specifics. From your histories, you are aware of the Systems - but the Subsystems you must encounter. The DIE may wander harmlessly through the wilderness… or immediately teleport into a city and annihilate it. You do not know, and cannot know. Drive it off, and save your families.

RULES posted:

  • The DIE moves on HEXES. They are bigger and contain seven Tiles. They are numbered.
  • Players move on TILES. They are smaller and have colours or icons on them. Each Tile has a coordinate based on their position within a Hex - for instance, in Hex 1, from top left, the Tiles are labelled 1A through 1G.
  • Players have 2 Wounds and can move 2 Tiles at a time.
  • Players may act and move or move twice.
  • When players end their movement on applicable Tiles, they roll 1d6. On a 6, they get a Tile Event and roll 1d6 again.
  • When players end their movement on applicable Tiles with icons on them, they roll 2d6 instead to see if they get Tile Events - they get an Event if either is 6, but only one.
  • Each round, players act first, then the DIE.
  • The DIE will roll their Subsystem roll and act accordingly. If the Subsystem is new, it will be added to the Archive.
  • The DIE is big. Very, very large indeed. Whatever Hexes it passes through are Squashed, darkening the component Tiles visibly on the map. These Squashed Tiles require players to roll 2d6 and get 6 on BOTH to get a Tile Event. Additionally, players in its path will take 1 Wound on the outskirts of a Hex and 2 Wounds in the center Tile. Don’t get squashed.
  • After resolving, the DIE will roll their System roll to select the System for next round.

The arcane tekkanic Icaru Santeria grew up in the foothills of the great volcano and had - at an earlier age than most - learned to accept that her life could be ended at any moment by a great catastrophe, like by a volcanic eruption or an unknowable entity like the Dire Engine.

When she came of age and focused her studies into the arcane arts, Icaru took to learning advanced motorized tekkanics and vehicle engineering. Her most recent passion-project has involved combining the artifacts of the HookFoot and the TrakSledge into a road-worthy passenger vehicle that could also reliably traverse the volcanic mountaintops. Used in conjunction with Pokk Wands and DynaVoulges, Icaru suspected that her hook-wheeled, multi-function RidgeRunner could be the next generation of weaponry in taking down a monster like the D.I.E.

The people of the northern city of Bellwood were known as the keepers of knowledge, birthing great mages, orators, teachers, and scholars of all stripes. Garvin had respect for those kinds of people, but he was a more practical sort.

Hiding in the woods, just a bit north of the village, he could feel his anxiety building, He absentmindedly bit his fingernails. It was coming, he could feel it. And even though he had the range to stay away from it, and the herbs to heal if things went poorly, he still wondered.

"Is this the day I die?"

No time for despairing thoughts-this was war.

If you could call it that. From what the Elders had said, fighting the D.I.E. was like trying to fight... not even a natural disaster, like a tornado or a tsunami. It was like trying to fight... the sky, or gravity, or the concept of war.

But if nothing else, he had to try.

"Blast ye landlubbers," he would shout, shaking his fist to the heavens, "the yard arm might'a cracked me skull a few times but I've still got a few limes left in me barrel!" The air grew thicker and thicker, almost choking with a damp pressure. The priests quaked in their chambers, the city folk peering nervously over their walls... but there was only so much one could prepare. If it came for a city, that was that. A bolt of arcane might blasted out of it, seeking the monstrosity!

Pokk Wand Blast!: 10d10 47

An average-slightly below average, actually-result, if the Elders had said right.

But it was a start.

Noting what they had said about Garistals, Garvin started weaving through the trees-he couldn't get to it now, but he could be right next to it.

Now he just had to hope the thing didn't move in his direction and crush him... or that Cassie girl he knew was around Bellwood.

Moving once, end position of 6D.

Weapon: Pokk Wand
Artifacts: Tekka Board, Binding Talisman

Lovelace spends the morning trying to reassure the panicky people of Ashwood, but doesn't have time to stick around; they close the gates behind her, and she spends the rest of the day trekking down the road towards Centerville, where they're probably organizing the effort. Around dusk she hits the shore of the lake, so she stops off at the sacred grove along the way and takes a reading from the guts of one of the mandrills there.

Icaru Santeria
Weapon: Pokk Wand - Damage: 10d10; Range: 1 hex
Artifacts: HookFoot & TrakSledge - Ignore Mountain movement penalties, +2 Move, and Drag adjacent allies

When the D.I.E. appeared in the modern age, it was preceded by a terrible deep rumbling from underfoot that brought the Hexen named Icaru Santeria to full alert at her research station in Cincinero at the base of the great volcano Krakaterra.

"This is it!" the motor tekkanic Icaru called out excitedly to her coworkers, as the rumbling continued unabated. "This is the big one!"

In an exhilarated hurry, Icaru grabbed her jacket, her gear, her Pokk Wand, and her bug-out bag from a locker and hopped in her patented mountain-worthy RidgeRunner. She pressed the dials and attuned the systems and fired it up. It was a special model of TrakSledge that used state-of-the-art artifact-fusing technology she'd been working with to bind automated HookFoot features to sledge treads to create a powerful, all-terrain vehicle that could ferry an entire family through forests and over mountains with ease.

"What are you waiting for?" Icaru hollered at her co-workers over the rumbling as she rushed more supplies into the research station's garage. "She's gonna blow!"

"Icaru - - it's coming from the west!" the lead researcher Geneverre yelled back, bracing herself against the seismic terminal she was reading. "it's not volcanic!"

"Wh-uat?!" Icaru blasted back, incredulous.

That's when they all heard the impossibly-loud tone emitted from the far west. It was unmistakable.

"It's... D.I.E.!" Icaru realized aloud, as the shaking only intensified.

She glanced around for confirmation from her coworkers, who were all just as terrified as her, if not more so.

"I have to go." Icaru stated, and after nodding to her colleagues she jumped back into her RidgeRunner and peeled out of the research station's garage at full speed.

Just as she hit the main streets of Cincinero in her RidgeRunner, the rumbling stopped as the D.I.E. erupted from below the surface of the ground far off in the distance to the west. It was a spectacle of world-shattering dread, but Icaru Santeria still found herself drawn to it. It was so impossibly large...

Tracking the D.I.E. wasn't difficult to do: one simply aimed along the main roads leading towards the gargantuan six-legged monstrosity the size of a large city looming in the western horizon. It was even easier considering all one had to do was head in the in the opposite direction of traffic.

The main question on Icaru's mind during this whole suicidal approach of hers was: what was she going to do when she ultimately caught up to it? She started scanning the communication bands for anything that might be helpful to hunters of the D.I.E. like her.

At some point in the journey, Icaru realized that she could make better time if she cut a trail through the forests jutting north of Centerville, so she did.

But something else was detected. A node! He grinned an evil grin, sand set off across the water to it's source, not waiting to see if there was a Tekk response.
