NPB quick update. This year no extra innings. All games to end after 9 innings. They are also going to finish all games before 9 pm. This is to comply with the current state of emergency in a few prefectures. (The state emergency is slated to end next week.) ~Manfred starts smiling and can't figure out why~

Ties are fine, especially in a 162-game season where every team in a division plays each other 19 times, and plays every team in the other divisions in the league 7 times. It's not really going to result in more ties in the standings.

That’ll cut yankee / Red Sox game lengths in half and it’s no worse than the DH rule or starting a runner on second in extras or moving the mound.

Still pointless since there is no giant crowd of potential fans waiting to start going to games once the average length is down by nine minutes, but if they’re so fixated on game length there’s some low hanging fruit out there.

forget the meth, it's the pain pills racket that are the thing no pro sports league wants to deal with, even after Tyler Skaggs etc.

These ST pitching moves where they pull a pitcher in one inning and they come out to start the next inning will never got be hilarious. God the Blue Jays' defense is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad. mcmagic fucked around with this message at 19:12 on Mar 21, 2021 |

That seems to be the logic, anyway. Would be nice to have some more strikeout pitchers with that strategy.

Ehire Adrianza has been a golden god this spring training, and thank goodness since that lowers the chance of Sandoval or Kipnis getting any reps whatsoever in the field.

One time I went to a Springfield cardinals game at like noon or so, met some friends there and had probably four or five big beers in addition to four baby shooter bottles. Made it through the entire game then blacked out as we stood up to leave at the end. Came to outside the stadium barfing in front of a school bus that I later learned was dropping off children from the Boys and Girls Club for what turned out to be the second game of the day’s doubleheader. Normally I would be concerned about traumatizing children but I figure they probably had seen it before if they were at boys and girls club on Saturday. That’s my story

Another time at a different Springfield cardinals game we were already a bit drunk when we got there and sat behind the visiting teams dugout. A couple old guys were sitting in the front row directly in front of us and we’re having a conversation with the visiting teams manager, apparently they were old friends. Anyway the manager told them he promised they would have a good time and we just thought oh how cool. Top of the Fourth or fifth inning comes around and one of the visiting guys gets called out looking. Manager goes crazy screaming “you’re blind, horseshit zone”, etc. he gets into a dirt kicking match and gets thrown out. He starts walking back to the dugout and winks at his old guy buddies as he disappears. Incredible

I don't think a .750 OPS catcher should be getting a deal through his mid-30s at 20 million per. He doesn't have old man hitting skills, so if his contact skill erodes he's gonna be pretty bad. No defensive specialist is worth that. I don't know how much he SHOULD make, but the third highest paid catcher in MLB seems like its too much in a vacuum. But like I wrote before, there's no-one else for them to have to pay right now really, so unless they plan to only be spending 100 million a year instead of 150ish like they were, its probably not a big deal and shouldn't really stop them from going out and signing a guy or two if they want.

I like KC rolling in with 'we will keep our beloved figure on the team and pay him well for it' when every other team will dump a player as soon as possible. Salvy is cool and he should get paid.

Ya I'm definitely for giving dudes legacy contracts especially when they did so much for the team when they were younger (and severely underpaid).

it is only a 4 year deal. normally the AAV would be lower and term higher, I assume that's how they worked this one out. salvy is a workhorse (minus the TJ) who hopefully will stay healthy, and a league average hitter and GG caliber catcher is a really valuable player. plus it'd be particularly awesome if his offense explosion last year took hold for a full season or two.
|
# ? Mar 22, 2021 03:18 |

Yeah, I'm happy they are keeping Salvy around. I was happy they kept Gordon around too even when he was no longer 'worth it.' Also, he is hard to gauge offensively because he has been so abused behind the plate. He played too drat much every season so his back half of the year is always awful. 2020 was a short year so surprise surprise, he was great. Hopefully the Royals learned something from that and realize he is more valuable of you actually rest him some. Edit: and before anyone hops on this to note 2020 is a short sample, I called it before the season started. I said the best thing about 2020 will be that it means only first half Salvy and that is what we got. So it wasn't exactly an unforeseeable fluke.

Another expose on the Rockies organizational dysfunction today, but this bit really jumped out:quote:The Rockies seem to live on an island of one, operating with different standards than other, more successful clubs, even internally. For instance, rather than bring back furloughed part-time clubhouse attendants for the shortened 60-game season in 2020, they assigned more than a half-dozen full-time front-office staffers to work the job of “clubbies,” including shining shoes, cleaning laundry and buying chewing tobacco for players, in both the home and visiting clubhouses at Coors Field.
