BigDave posted:Until WWI, wrist watches were considered feminine; men wore pocket watches. Yeah, soldiers found wristwatches easier to manage than pocket watches on the battlefield and continued using them in civilian life, which is why it's a watch-wearing soldier that convinces Everett to stay his wrath. Something similar happened with cigarettes, incidentally -- before World War I, cigarettes were considered effete and real men smoked cigars or pipes. But then the military found cigarettes easier to transport and manage, and the stigma disappeared.

I'm mainly puzzled on why Everett seems to think he needs to hit a woman with his umbrella. He seems to disapprove of even a woman wearing a wristwatch, cause if he wanted to ask the time, surely he'd... just... ask? Also goddamn On The Fasttrack is awful because the boss never seems to get any comeuppance, at best Dethany just does things outside of her knowledge, like a cartoon mouse sneaking crumbs out of the kitchen.

Arguably since Elly Patterson is explicitly an author self-insert, it's fair to say that Lynn Johnston is an abusive mother. I'm not sure if Everett True is an author self-insert or not.

lucky I didn't claim Condo himself was a protofascist thug who regularly targets pacifists, socialists and effeminate men, then. Just that he certainly was quite consistent in writing a character who is, and quite careful in making him also relatable.

Classic Kevin & Kell (April 3-7, 2000) Ding ding! Gotta say, I like the joke in strip #4. (Also, this is the second mention of the "rabbit license" thing, which apparently is something that can be taken away by the Rabbit Council for serious transgressions; the first time it showed up, if you'll remember, Kevin was at risk of losing it because he's too unfit to properly run away from threats.)

Mikl posted:Classic Kevin & Kell (April 3-7, 2000) Ahhh a nigh perfect expression of Holbrook's warped liberal sympathies. Kel is a good person because she doesn't want to cheat when hunting rabbits, preferring to murder them based on her own skill. Whereas R.L. is a bad person because he's fine with cheating as long as it lets him murder more rabbits. As you might have noticed many antagonists in Kevin and Kel, particularly the nameless ones who just get one-shotted by the overpowered abomination baby, are identified as evil solely because they're not very competent and picking on what they believe to be an easy target. But Kel is codified as good, despite having a higher body count than all these walk-on parts put together, because she follows the rules. Which in the liberal conceptualization, is more important than the actual outcome.

Mämmilä (October 20, 1990) New major character, and a problematic one at that! Meet Muhammed al-Zomal, the new owner of the Ylä-Mämmilä farm. All I can say is that from today's viewpoint the character is pretty "90s progressive" but ultimately Koivisto means well. On a culinary note, muikkukukko (or more commonly kalakukko) is a traditional Finnish food particularly connected to Savonia region (Savo). It's a kind of pie with a rye crust, filled with fish and pork.
