tsob posted:I'm still not really seeing the difference between Murph handling Balnor along with pretty much everyone else, including one or two fairly well defined villains or supporting characters pretty much every arc, and a player having it to do it with two characters for maybe a handful of episodes at most. It's also not like they would have to refresh themselves on the characters in this case, since both characters are going to be relatively fresh unless Murph waits a year or two to have them meet and there are no Hexbud episodes in the meantime. It's sort of a different mindset when you're the DM. The DM isn't really the one in control, they're merely reacting to the choices of the PC's. The PC's are expected to inhabit their character's during the session, trying to manage multiple character's with different knowledge, opinions, and skill sets are very difficult.

Well, that aside, I've been meaning to point out this episode of Breaking News! for a while, because it might be one of the best along with the one where they make Grant roast himself and it's up on YouTube, even if they put some banners to sub on it and censor the swearing. Erika starts the episode by almost immediately losing it, but it's nothing compared to Amy Vorpahl's complete meltdown a few minutes in as she tries desperately to hold it together and just falls apart in the effort. It also shows off Brennan's stoneface breaking just a little, since even he can't not laugh at Amy's situation.

Yeah, I've rewatched that and the Grant O'Brien episode numerous times, and I love how it cuts away to her making that dumbass face every now and again before her segment and you can see that even in those moments where she's not actually doing anything she's on the verge of losing it. And that every now and again she'll try and rescue herself by making the face, and immediately fall apart again whenever she tries. Erika's "stop, it hurts" at the end as she's bent over laughing at Amy while Brennan tries out her face and can't maintain it for even a second is just I don't think anyone else even comes close to losing it as badly as she did in the show so far. tsob fucked around with this message at 18:37 on Feb 18, 2021 |

strong ending for the hexbuds arc that glimpse of whats going on in the setting at the highest levels was interesting. i wonder if the godchild is like, henry or someone we already know. either way his run-in with a prophet is pretty interesting given what we know now

I still have no idea who he is but he was a killer guest. I've got a feeling Emily and jakes characters would've fallen flat without him to bring the heat. The arc did end pretty interestingly too. Glad it's already getting a little more grey than it was previous.

Looking back, it now feels extremely weird that he hasn’t been on naddpod before, yeah. Also DEFINITELY watch/listen to dimension 20 if you like naddpod, the faces are all going to be very familiar to you and it has a very similar vibe. And as great a DM as Murph is, I think Brennan is even better (this isn’t a dig at Murph, who again, I love, it’s just that Brennan gets super super into it and is an absolute natural)

I don't know him from anything else but Dropout content, mostly Dimension 20, but he's part of the regular panel of characters there and pretty much always entertaining. He's been in, I think, 6 seasons of it, between 1 seasons of "A Crown of Candy" (Game of Thrones meets Candyland), 2 Seasons of "Unsleeping City" (DnD fantasy New York from what I gather; haven't seen it yet) and 3 seasons of Fantasy High (DnD high school). He brings a lot of energy to everything I've seen him in, including occasional spots on other Dropout content, like "Umm, Actually...", "Breaking News" and "Game Changer". He's not my favourite of the Dropout crew, but he's definitely always fun regardless. That said, while Emily and Jake's characters aren't as immediately fun I think they are good enough as improvisers and players in general that they'd have found a way to bring comic legs out regardless of who the third person they were paired up with was. It happened to be Lou in this case, but I can't imagine they wouldn't have found a way to tease out some comedy if it was someone else and their characters are basically setup for it. Emily's most obviously, given that she started out with several hooks for comedy such as being part of a cult believing in a local grifter styling himself as the son of God etc. Ainsley McTree posted:Looking back, it now feels extremely weird that he hasn’t been on naddpod before, yeah. Yeah, I generally prefer Brennan as well. Not that he's flat out better or anything, but he gets so emotionally invested in all the little things his players do and happy no matter what happens, as well as just having a great ability to vividly describe everything that's happening and bringing his characters to life. Murph I think comes up with some more imaginative mechanics to vary up fights and tends to have more things going on in general, though that might just be a function of having longer campaigns, but it's hard not to love how in to Brennan gets. Plus, one advantage of watching D20 content is that Murph is a regular player in all the seasons Lou is, as well as Emily, Siobhan (Apple Scrumper) and Zac.

Nyaack was fun but pretty weak as a character, yeah. Kind of got trapped by in-jokes. Corbo was cute, but yeah Jabari really stole the show.

I don't think Nyaack was especially great as a solo character but the comedy duo of Nyaack and Jens was first-class (better than either of them would have been on their own) Jake's character from Hot Boy Summer is the only one I really have any clear memory of. Normally I'd be super annoyed at a guest turning up and completely overshadowing the regulars, but I think both Jake and Emily are strong enough performers that they held their own well enough even if neither of their characters got as much of a chance to shine, and more importantly they were all clearly having a lot of fun with it, which is probably the single most important thing in a performance like this to me.

I feel like it's hard to single out any of the trinyvale characters as the best, it's really the group dynamic that makes that campaign special. Murph acting like a high-status character, while Jake and Emily play characters who allegedly look up to him, while simultaneously building a world in which Jens has no control over his life, constantly lies about how cool he is, and can't stop the other two from running circles around him was just incredibly funny relationship play. I also loved the handful of moments where Nyack gets pushed just a little too far and he briefly snaps before getting back under composure. I forget the exact circumstances, or wording, but he had a line like "Well why doesn't he just carry the loving gloves then??" that caught me off guard and killed me

I'll be truthful, I never finished Trinyvale and a lot of that is that I found Nyack dull, and Emily's character only okay. The only time Nyack got a good chuckle outta me is when he finally admitted all of Jens porn was his.

As much as I’m enjoying Eldermourne, I feel like the familiars have gotten out of hand. I really like Shank, I don’t mind Bookvar but Spritle is a little irritating. I don’t have as much affection for the trio that I did for the band of boobs at this point, and part of that is that it feels like there’s not enough oxygen in the room for them. It seems that the trio interact a lot with the familiars and bounce off them instead of each other, a lot more than they did with Paw-Paw. It’s still very enjoyable but I don’t really like the Third Mates as much as the Band of Boobs, or even the Hexbloods.

I feel that, It's like everyone was on that Paw Paw train and wanted their own track, Bookvar is whatever, Shank is really not that overused except in combat. Spritle just feels a step too far, he doesn't do anything except take up dialogue time. I would be fine if they took a trip.

# ? Mar 22, 2021 07:08 |

Spritle has some potential for trapping them into more inconvenient Faerie Promises and Shank is pretty much the entire point of the class Jake is playing, and...gently caress it, I like Bookvar, but we're definitely running into the problem of having too many NPCs traveling with the party, and it does seem to be to the detriment of relationship-building between the actual PCs. (Though we're really not that many episodes into this campaign, it just feels like longer because of the Hexbuds interlude.) I love the feel of Eldermourne as a place, and I like the characters in general, and I think there's plenty of time for it to all gel. (Their continued attempts to get to the bottom of Henry's curse is a good step in this direction.) (I am not convinced we really needed two episodes of "roll a check to see if you can climb this stretch of mountain, okay, now roll a check to see if you can climb THIS stretch of mountain" though.)

Yeah I definitely checked out on the latest episode due to how slow things seem to be. I got to "finish him" in the latest episode and saw there was not a lot left, so I just flipped on a different podcast and am assuming I'm not missing much that this week's recap won't cover I kinda want Hexbuds more than the main campaign, but I think that's mainly because I love Lou and they were all higher level. Around 10-ish is when I enjoy actual play podcasts the most

It's hard to beat several episodes of pure strain Lou Wilson, extremely good roleplayer, but I'm enjoying the return to Eldermourne's main plot, it's fun. Feels nearly identical to Bahumia for me, but slightly more developed maybe.

I agree, Dragonbreath Bookvar felt a little... much. Spritel being into gossip is a cute gimmick but a little overdone. I feel confident they'll find a good rhythm, though! That whole rock throwing fight was pretty fun.

Dragon breath on bookvar is fine to me because it's a legit spell combo (find familiar + dragons breath), plus bookvar is fragile as poo poo and if he goes down in one hit that's 2 spells in the shitter. plus it falls off hard later

I feel like they all realized the value of familiars mechanically and they all want their little fellow to be the next Pawpaw. Also Shank is not a familiar and has a legitimate reason to be there unlike Sprital. Dragon Breath Bookvar(DBB) makes me chuckle. I like Emily's whole deal about literally fighting her books into submission to teach her spells as well. Crazyeyes fucked around with this message at 20:54 on Mar 25, 2021 |
