Scotland can't hold another referendum on Independence without the backing of Westminster, which they won't get at the moment (because it's fairly clear Independence would win) [edit] 127 is the smallest prime that can be written as the sum of the first two or more odd primes: 127 = 3 + 5 + 7 + 11 + 13 + 17 + 19 + 23 + 29

OwlFancier posted:Yeah exactly, the point is that they think travellers are just inherently wrong for some reason, and everything else is just an after the fact justification. You realise people have experiences in their life, and form their opinions based on that right? Anyone who’s had a group of Irish travellers rock up in their town, park on a green space, commit crime, leave litter, refuse to leave and then abandon the place with piles of litter and poo poo on it will have a similar opinion. They don’t see them as a race, just as a group of people who behave in an antisocial way. Where are the people with positive experiences, who live to see a group of travellers turn up in a field opposite their house? (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

It will probably exclude you from having any long-term or chronic conditions treated well (because there'd be no continuity of care), but if the most you need is a refill of a prescription every couple of months, or to take your kid to get checked out when they're ill, it's probably fine. Dental care would be trickier to get anything more then urgent care, and even then you might have to hunt around to find somewhere that'll take you, but if all else fails you can rock up at A&E and they can sort something out. One of my best friends is a Irish traveler, what she did was sell all the horses and the businesses and run like hell to Ireland within a week of the election because all of this was in the Tory manifesto. But anyway, she and her family all home schooled and home schooled *well*. They did all the basics, but history also included traveler history. It was essentially a cross between sitting in a “classroom” and an apprenticeship, not one of these kids was ever going to get a job outside of a business owned by the family, be it horse breeding or running the cafes.

also gently caress you if you think travellers are all caravan trains rocking up to village greens, there are far more of them who have bought the land outright and have running battles with NINBY who do everything possible to stop them legally hooking up to the electrics/sewage and getting rubbish collections in an attempt to get them off the land. Crime in areas with these small private camps absolutely tanks because the traveling community makes it clear they don’t want to be targeted by police raids so any thieving scrotes need to stay away.

Crime in areas with these small private camps absolutely tanks because the traveling community makes it clear they don’t want to be targeted by police raids so any thieving scrotes need to stay away. We're seeing almost the exact opposite situation in Bow at the minute. There's been a traveler camp in the middle of Bow South Junction (a triangle of land formed by three rail lines) since at least the mid 20th century which is now basically permanent (*officially* the land belongs to Network Rail but it's completely dead space - like I say it's bounded by three busy rail lines so has extremely limited access and is noisy as gently caress, there's nothing at all you could do with the land officially) to the point that they've not only built homes and streets they even have proper road markings and even speed bumps. They even quite happily moved over a bit, demolishing a couple of homes, to allow an access shaft and substation for Crossrail to be built in one corner. While there was some friction between the locals and the travelers, for the most part everyone kept to themselves and by the 80s nobody really thought anything of this little village buried away through a railway arch - the kids go to local schools, the adults mostly work for Network Rail (don't forget a big chunk of the Traveler community are *still* navvies, which was one of their main origins) and run a couple of local scrappies. Then gentrification happened, and as it's swept down from the old Match Factory all of a sudden everyone is Very Concerned about the camp (like I say, really not a camp), plod are patrolling it extremely aggressively, and stories about them "stealing" mains water and electricity are turning up in the paper all the time, and there are at least rumours of attempted firebombings. In other words, the middle class have just dropped in to this area of London and are now making GBS threads it up, and will no doubt gently caress off as fashion changes and leave everyone else to clean their poo poo up.

My dad, The Nazi, once had Irish travellers do his driveway for dirt cheap in the 1990s, this included edging all his borders with kerbing. For years and years after that he would look at road maintenance crews like a hopeful dog with it’s head out the window in case he saw them again and could ask them to build him a patio.

A young woman said to me: "I have had the most horrible experiences with furriers; they robbed me, they burned the fur I entrusted to them. Well, they were all Jews." But why did she choose to hate Jews rather than furriers? Why Jews or furriers rather than such and such a Jew or such and such a furrier? Because she had in her a predisposition toward anti-Semitism.

I know you didn't intend it to sound this way but this statement feels off to me. Kids shouldn't be automatically enrolled into a de facto family business where their lives are essentially determined for them from the off. This is an issue I do have with the culture of many - I won't say all, I'm sure there are plenty of exceptions - traveller communities. There seems to be a fairly strict and often toxic internal conservatism - which jobs are 'appropriate', what the role of men and women are, etc etc that are quite strictly enforced. What do you do if you're a little kid - a little girl especially - who wants to become a doctor or whatever, something you need formal qualifications for, and in subjects that simply can't be effectively home taught unless you happen to have a specialist for a parent? These of course are big enough hurdles for any working class person, but when it comes to travellers it seems even more insurmountable, and I often feel like I'm expected to celebrate that as some kind of ~cultural diversity~. I'll defend people's rights to cultural practices right up until the point where those cultural practices become nakedly toxic, at that point you simply have to adapt and develop to leave behind the bad poo poo. In the village I grew up in large families of hasidic jews would live in some local caravan parks for summer for the summer, which meant I grew up hearing people blame every bad thing that happened int he village during July and August on "the jews starting a fire on the golf course" and the "the jews leaving a gate open and some cows escaped" and so forth. Outside of summer the blame for these things naturally shifted back to teenagers. When I moved to England and started hearing the same thing blaming "Pikeys" etc for every missing dog or fly tip I was like oh this is just like the anti-semitism and had to listen to a bunch of English people explain how it's totally different and travellers aren't actually a race and so on an so on. People are just desperate for a group of outsiders they can blame everything bad on rather than accept that the problems are coming from their own community.
